What time of the day is best to take a baby aspirin for heart therapy purposes? I received one of those e mails that are forwarded around about what time of the day is best to take a baby aspirin for heart therapy. It stated before one goes to bed. Question is: is this true?

Sunshine replied: "I have always taken mine when I go to bed (and keep them on the night stand)."

maryjane_420_il replied: "taking an aspirin before you go to bed isn't really the best idea in the world because your stomach usually isn't full and aspirin can cause ulcers, I suggest taking an aspirin with your breakfast in the morning and always make sure to drink some milk with it trust me it will help save your stomach on a long term aspirin regimen like that."

I've heard that taking a "baby" aspirin once a day may be good for heart health. How much is a "baby" aspirin? My regular Bayer tablets are 325 mg. If I cut them in half and take a half-aspirin once a day, would this be too much?

rwa000 replied: "81 mg"

bunnyluvr replied: "I believe Bayer makes an aspirin meant to be taken daily for heart health or you could take the Children's version. It is 81mg just like the previous person said. I wouldn't cut your others in half. Just buy the right ones."

Sasha replied: "Recent research indicates an appropriate dose of aspirin is between 80 and 160 mg per day. This is actually half of the standard 325-milligram aspirin commonly prescribed. Many studies show the lower dose works just as well as the higher dose, while reducing the risk of internal bleeding. A baby aspirin contains 81 mg. There are similarly lower-dose adult aspirin varieties available. The standard aspirin is prescribed daily for adults is 75 mg. Analysis has shown that the minimum dose of 75 mg plain aspirin is the lowest effective dose for heart protection, though most cardiologist are now recommending a daily full-dosage 325 mg aspirin. But it is best to speak to your doctor first--taking an aspirin daily can have a significant affect on your stomach, with little benefit. And there are other factors with your health to be considered. For instance, the BBC reported in October 2008: Aspirin should not routinely be used to prevent heart attacks in people with diabetes, Scottish research suggests. The British Medical Journal reported that in 1,300 adults with no symptoms of heart disease the drug, which can cause stomach bleeds, had no benefit. The findings contradict many guidelines which advocate people with diabetes use aspirin to counter the underlying high risk of heart attack and stroke. But there are key high-risk groups who still need the drug, experts said. Patients with concerns are advised to consult their GP before changing medication."

Margi replied: "aspirin thins your blood and you have less change of gettting a heart attack or blld clot"

I have anxiety, fear of heart problems, can i prescribe myself baby aspirin? some might think im silly, but im serious. is it ok for a 17 year old to take baby aspirins a day?

versantly replied: "any med has inherent risks. talk to your doctor. it's great to be aware of your body and your future, but insane to feel the level of anxiety you have."

futuredoc replied: "Yeah, you can, but taking them chronically for decades can thin the lining of your stomach, and it's a blood thinner. Talk to your doctor first."

Do you take a daily aspirin for your heart? Did your doctor tell you to do this or did you decide to do it on your own? Also, do you take one regular or one baby aspirin?

October replied: "One baby aspirin. On my own"

Kevin replied: "Corona, Yes, I do. My Dr. suggested I do it. I'm 45 and have had high blood pressure for several years. It runs in the family. I even had mild high bp when I was fairly fit. I don't take a regular one or a baby one. Both of those get dissolved and metabolized in your system over only about 4 hours. Most drug companies make little tiny ones now that dissolve slowly over the course of a day and are just the right amount that is beneficial to your heart - which is 81 mg. -Kevin also - just for completeness of the story - yes I am on high bp medicine as well. I take one called hyzaar. Other than getting me up an extra time or two at night, which I end up doing anyway because the dogs need to run outside for a moment as well, and causing me to need another half hour or so of sleep, it has virtually no side effects."

wildhorse51 replied: "The Dr. told me to take one everyday. I take a reg. size one. Wish I had thought to take one a few years ago. I might not have had a heart attack."

jackmatt replied: "I do. Dr suggested it just b/c my dad died of a massive heart attack at the age of 53, but he also drank, smoked & had a chronic heart condition, but I just take it as an added precaution RN"

sweetbaby81639 replied: "no my husband that now my x made it to were i cant talk to my docktor so i take one asprin in the morning to pervent anouther heart attack"

What's more constipating, 750 mg of iron per day or 81 mg of baby aspirin? My silly 17 yr old son says that his one a day 81 mg of baby aspirin that his heart doctor ordered him to take for 6 weeks following a heart ablation is more constipating than the 750 mg of of iron I take daily that my doctor ordered because I am anemic. Which is worse? I told him, if he just follows my instructions and takes or or two natural laxatives a day like I do, he won't be constipated. He keeps quiting them and ends up so constipated he missed 2 days of school in about a week or week in a half. I told him that it's his choise, take them or stay constipated. I have tried to talk to him about other alternative meds for constipation and over the counter remedies that work good for me like fiber, etc. He doesn't like to talk about that kind of stuff he says. I said that I'm only his mom, not an audience. He won't talk to his dad who lives in Montana, and I doubt he'll talk to his girlfriend about it. Any suggestions on this keep everything to yourself sort of teen guys or gals? My son says he's never had a problem like this in his life. All's I can say is, "Welcome to the club". I'm sorry that he has to go through this.

sokokl replied: "Even though everyone is different the iron pills are more likely to be constipating than the aspirin. However, I would recommend that you let your son's doctor know about these side effects from the aspirin to see if there might be another way to deal with the issue. I would also recommend checking with the pharmacist to see what they say."

Fater45 replied: "I do not know of aspirin being constipating. Synthesized iron is, possibly because of its toxic effect. What I do know is that the regular use of aspirin inhibits the absorption of some important nutrients, mainly the antioxidants. The regular use of raw garlic, raw cabbage, raw onion will help to keep the blood flowing freely. Raw cabbage along with other raw vegetables and raw fruits along as well as 8 - 10 glasses of water per day will help to keep the bowel free. Eating foods rich in B vitamins, Vitamins A, C, and iron will help to prevent anemia. These foods include all green leafy vegetables, all fruits and vegetables that are yellow and orange in color, citrus, pineapple, mangoes, celery parsley, beef and other dairy products, organ meats, nuts and seeds. Fruits and vegetables are more beneficial when eaten raw. The following link will give you more information:"

Panick attack, can i take baby aspirin? I had a panick attack this morning at 6am and was taken by ambulance. They discharged me without giving me anything, i had a high blood pressure of 140 and almost 100 pulse the ambulance gave me Nitro something (under my tongue) for my heart because i was having chest pain. Now my blood pressure went down to 103 but i have a horrible migraine, is it ok for me to take baby aspirin? even though my blood pressure is high?

Lore replied: "Have you tried calling your doctor, or the hospital for advice?"

jenabel replied: "Do you mean your heart rate? It's fine to take a baby aspirin, but it won't do much... Just take a tylenol. You'll be fine. Hope your feeling better."

Gayman replied: "baby asprin will be fine, ne thing in there that might ba able to harm you will be in such a small doseage that it wouldnt hurt you unless you take like 5-10 bottles of baby asprins lol"

huelsman_royalty replied: "some places say aspirin actually lowers your blood pressure if taken at night. I would call the doctor though, they always have someone on call that will call you."

yourpastlifelover replied: "It's fine for you to take the aspirin, but an aspirin isn't going to do anything if it's an actual migraine headache. No harm in trying, though....once the pain stops, call your primary care provider and demandcounseling or possible anxiety medication. If you do actually get migraines, you might want to look into an Rx for that. If you start to get dizzy, feel nauseous, or see auras or halos around objects, then go call 911 again. Actual migraines can sometimes be fatal and should not go untreated."

Queen Pink Cat replied: "The Nitro is what gave you the headache. I think you could take something more. But I can't believe they gave you nitro for panic. Seems strange."

Andie replied: "The headache you are having is probably from the nitroglycerin they gave you in the ambulance. All chest pain is treated like a heart attack until proved otherwise, and nitroglycerin dilates the vessels of the heart to increase blood flow. Unfortunately it can give you a pretty bad headache. A systolic blood pressure of 140 and a pulse of 100, all things considered, are not really that high. The blood pressure and heart rate you experienced were probably both due to the panic, and not another medical condition. I doubt baby aspirin will relieve your headache, and I would suggest taking the regular dose, or ibuprofen. If you are worried, Tylenol is pretty benign and has few side effects or drug interactions, but in my experience doesn't work well for headaches. I would suggest calling the follow up number given to you by the ER if you are really concerned or if the headache persists. But if it makes you feel better, it is standard medical practice to give people who are having heart attacks or chest pain (like they thought you were at first) both nitroglycerin and aspirin. Aspirin will not affect your blood pressure."
