Effexor/Venlafaxine Withdrawal Syndrome? GP decided to drop from 225 to 75 for 5 days and then none. Now, head shocks, dizziness, diahorrea and vomiting, constant crying, agitation, jerky movements. Is there anything i can do? Went to a and e to get help it was so bad but have to wait until seeing psych on tuesday. Please help I have tried 3 doctors today Thank you very much healthy...totally don't expect to have any medical opinion obviously :) but just wondered if anything had helped anyone

healthymind replied: "That was too much of a drop in dosage & that is causing your symptoms. I am not a doctor, so I can't tell you what to do, but from many years of having to take these kinds of meds, I recognize these symptoms. The only thing I would know to do is up your dose until you can see a better doctor because your system is in shock. It will make it go away, then you can go off them slowly. You may have to decrease by 100mg per week, but that is just too big of a jump."

Effexor withdrawal, more of 3 months? I dont know what to do. Help me! I was discontinuate this evil drug in the begining of March. I`m still feel more labile. Sometimes everything is good, sometimes i feel brutal suicidal thoughs and feelings, anxiety and vomiting. They come ang go again and again, some doctors told me that post acute withdrawal syndrome is 6 months, i am vary confused, if i`m going insane ??? I`l never put on this drug again, but how i will feel batter and stabel??

insaneforevr replied: "Effexor really sux when u r getting off of it! I had a rally hard time just trying 2 function on a daily basis. U might wanna' try something else!"

Chastity C replied: "Stepping down off a med is an arduous and scary process. What have your doctors done to help you overcome the withdrawal? I don't think they should be content with the statistic that it may take 6 months to get over the acute withdrawal syndrome...that's unacceptable!! Go to the link above to see what other patients are saying about Effexor and the best way to manage your life after it. I switched from Effexor to a combination of Wellbutrin and Remeron, which just made me completely batty. My psychiatrist's reasoning was that taking different combinations of SSRIs will counteract the side effects of changing medications. It was a long and painful process, but I pretty much cut all meds cold turkey and relied on heavy therapy to get me through the withdrawal symptoms. I wish you the best of luck with overcoming."

Sarah N replied: "Hi, I take Effexor XR and I have taken it 2 other times before in my life (each a period of about 2 yrs). It really works for me. Why did you discontinue? I have never heard that the withdrawl symptoms take up to 6 months to get over! That sounds crazy to me..... I've gotten off it before and it only took a couple of weeks. It could be your anxiety coming back do you think? Maybe you can talk to your doctor about trying something else, maybe Effexor is just not right for you. I wouldn't come off any medication without consulting the doctor. Goodluck :)"

Are you on venlafaxine? This doctor says that he has not witnessed such a severe withdrawal syndrome in 30? years of prescribing antidepressants and that the manafacturers are not telling the doctors and psychiatrists about it. I advise you to refuse if you are ever offered this terrible drug. I am coming off it and am getting the weirdest, most disturbing dreams I've ever had, fits of anger, suicidal feelings, a strange disturbing indescribable whooshing in the head (known as brain zaps) a strange kind of dizziness, sleeplessness, night sweats that drench the sheets. These symptoms are known to last for up to a year and make you feel as though you are permanently brain damaged Please sign this petition if you've had bad experiences with this drug: Tracey - I'm telling the truth unlike the lying manafacturers. Its up to each individual to decide what they will do with this truth. The manafacturers know that people cannot withdraw easily from this drug and hide the evidence from the GP's and patients. Its all about money - if people cannot withdraw then they are rubbing their hands with glee. And I am just warning others to try any other antidepressant but this one.

*TRACY* replied: "Its dangerous to put a comment like that on here. Do u not think now that if someone is on them, reads your remarks, that they will stop taking them!!!!!!!! meds are different for everyone so maybe it just your experience of them, they obviously help some people or they would not b prescibed!!!!"

Warrior Poo Flinger replied: "Oh yeah! I was on Effexor years ago and reported these side effects and withdrawl symptoms. I could literally hear electricity building up in my ears right before one of those zaps. Yes, definitely do not stop meds without supervision by your doctor."

ASR replied: "I agree with Tracy. everyones chemistry is different. Because the meds didn't work for you does not mean they are bad or won't work for someone else, like say me. I take effexor and have so for years they only time I had a bad experience is when a new doctor tool of them. I found a new doctor and I am back to normal. Making comments like that can be playing with someones life, find a new med that works for you and move on. Let it go and Be Well. By the way any type of med will have a side effect or two."

Mahadelic replied: "I was on 375mg per day of venlafaxine and quit cold turkey. The withdrawal was pretty horrendous, but nowhere near that of coming off olanzapine. I would not advise anyone to follow in my footsteps, but I think you should take your scaremongering elsewhere."

J replied: "is it as bad as seroxat? people can suddenly kill other people/themselves/self harm... and its very common. And I cant come off it becuase I cant cope with the side effects: lasat time I came off very slolwy, over 9 months and then landed myself in a general psychiatric hospitla wanting to die. And still glaxo-smith-klien prescribe it. Its only saving grace is that they banned it being prescribed to people under 18."
