Is it ok to use birth control pills for controlling acne and to regulate my period? I am going to start on birth control pills to help me clear my acne and also to help me regulate my period, is this ok? Thank you for your answers!

3ng1n33rgurl replied: "Yeah, definitely fine. If you get tempted to start having sex, remember the reasons you started taking the pill. :-)"

Stephanie replied: "it definitely ok and safe. :D my one friend is on it to help with her acne. and i just got on it to help with my period cramps"

Frances replied: "Yes. When I was a teenager, I was put on that for the same thing, and it worked."

Kirsten L replied: "Yes, and your periods probably won't be as painful either."

Alexa replied: "Yeah, many doctors prescribe the pill for these reasons. In october I was put on yaz to clear up my acne and make my period more comfortable ( I had really bad cramps and a heavy flow) Now that i'm on it I usually just skip my period because it's so much more convenient. Birth control will make your period more regular and hopefully take away some of the negative effects of your period. I never gained any weight or had any bad effects of the pill but that is different for everyone. When I began I had no intention of using the pill as my form of birth control (just the acne and period pain) but now I find it comforting to know that if I do have sex i'm protected against pregnancy."

getchoo8199 replied: "That is the reason most women start birthcontrol pills. so it is completely normal. I started when I was 16 to try to help regulate my periods. You may need to try a few if it doesn't help you. you usually have to try a pill for a few months to see if it is going to help you. I had to try four pills before I found one that was perfect for me. I am now 26. So best of luck."

SweetCandy replied: "yeah, thats why i started taking them..."

can birth control pills be used to control acne in a 25 yr old girl? my girlfriend said this to me, she takes birthcontrol, but we use condoms. i have been thinking this issue over and over.the when she told me these i tried to research on this, but i just need for information. i do not belief her theory. i can smell a fish.im like birth control pills for acne as hormone therapy. help me answer this puzzle.

»-(¯`v´¯)--»CHELSEA«- replied: "my birth control has definitely helped my acne so that i only get pimples for the days im on my period and even then its only one. shes telling the truth dude."

wofford1257 replied: "it shure can but if you smoke. well its not gonna work"

Chelly replied: "My sister is on a birth control that helps with acne..."

lace1 replied: "yes they do."

Dr.Tawy replied: "Contraceptive pills do really interfere with hormones and their actions, however their effect is far away from controlling acne i want you to tell your girlfriend that there is creams and sprays that are very effective against acne and generally using contraceptive method we doctors do not recommend it to a women that had not gave birth before as it may cause infertility"

angeldiva replied: "yes, birth control pills can be given for help with acne."

Jay-j replied: "Girl I use ortho tricyclen. They are the best! My skin is beautiful now."

annbest711 replied: "If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point. For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all. Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck. Oh, by the way the site that helped me is: "

How long before birth control pills help acne? How long does it take from when you start taking birth control pills for acne till the acne starts to clear up? A few months?

Elan J replied: "Could take 1 or 2 cycles of pills. Hang in there. You will see results."

blondielocksoccer replied: "Sometimes it might not. Both my sister and I are on the same type of birth control and i never had acne problems and she did, and the birth control didn't help it at all. It releived her cramps but it didn't do anything for the acne. If it will do anything it might take at least 2 months, and if you're unhappy with it, swtich types of birth control."

TPhi replied: "It shouldn't take that long. I'd say you'd start seeing a difference by month 2 and definitely by month 3. If not, consider switching to a different brand. My daughter is on her 4th or 5th different pill in 2 years. She is taking BCP's for PCOS mainly, but she battles acne also. Right now she is taking Yasmine, and the first month she still broke out . . . . probably because of the change in pills, but it's been a whole month now and her face is clearing up. Other things that have helped: Washing with a mild cleanser and following up with astringent with 2% salicilic acid. (Benzoil peroxide makes her face worse) Never wearing make-up to bed - - - - but the make up she does use is Bare Minerals Taking Evening Oil of Primrose capsules (can buy them in the vitamin section at Walmart) Taking Omega-3 Fish Oil Capsules (1 a day, and you can get them coated so they don't have aftertaste) Tanning bed - - - she doesn't overdo it on the tanning bed, but working up to 15 minutes, 3 times a week has helped a lot. I noticed this week that her face looks better than it has in months. So some of the above must have helped."

Kendra replied: "It took me a good month, to a month and a half."

Question about birth control pills for acne? I have moderate acne and I've heard that some birth control pills will help clear it up. If my doctor puts me on bc for acne will he still have to give me a pelvic and breast exam like he would if I was getting on the pill for birth control? Do they give you any exam at all if he is putting you on the pill for acne?

sokokl replied: "Not all doctors will require you to undergo a pelvic exam and pap smear (or even a breast exam) prior to going on the pill. Each doctor is different about this issue. It will depend on your doctor's personal preference."

Lily replied: "Tri cyclen lo really helped my skin clear up. I don't think your doctor is gonna is give you an exam (if you've never had sex)if he puts you on bc for acne"

fallingskilletup replied: "I tried the birth control for acne and my doctor did not give me an exam. But in all honesty its all according to your doctor. Also, I would not use the birth control for acne. It didn't help much and I gained so much weight! After 3 yrs of using it, I started having serious health problems. So I would suggest asking about Differn Gel, Minocycline, and Duac cream. It worked wonders for me!!"

bev_b20 replied: "first off, using the pill for skin conditions isn't advisable. if you are sexually active and need borth control it is an option. Secondly, get a good skin care regime going something that will actually clean the skin without stripping it. I have used nutrimetics for years and have clear skin with minimal breakouts. It's an all natural product and uses apricot kernal oil in the majority of its products. The creams and lotions are very concentrated and lasts a long time. Next, drink 6 - 8 glasses of water a day so you can flush out the system. Take a vitamin a supplement and Eat a healthy diet. Stay off chips and pop. All of the above is much better for you than bc pills."

murigenii replied: "Try all other methods to clear your acne first, in other words go to a dermatologist. I did this and still couldn't get rid of the acne so I was put on bc. And yes I was given the full exam. I don't care what kind of doctor you have you should have an appropriate exam before being put on any medication. The bc did work for me. Since nothing else did this meant that my acne was caused by a hormonal imbalance."

julie replied: "Birth control pills may significantly improve acne, and may be used specifically for the treatment of acne. It is also important to know that oral antibiotics may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. This is uncommon, but possible, especially if you notice break-through bleeding. Can I clear up hormonal acne WITHOUT birth control pills? I am wondering if anyone else has had any luck clearing up their hormonal acne without the use of birth control. Is there any kind of antibiotic I can take? The pill helped my acne but caused my hair to fall out and I had headaches alot. Is there any kind of antibiotic I can take? Or natural remedies for hormonal acne? I am looking for any other option but the pill....

anti_pop_chic replied: "take about four aspirin and dissolve them in a few drops of water.. add in a squirt of honey and make it into a paste.. you can also add in a few vitamin e capsules if ya like.. this can be used as a scrub, mask if left on for ten minutes, and a spot treatment left on over night.. it works like pro active.. i've used both and got the same result with each which is clear skin.. pro active dried my skin out, but aspirin didn't.. it's a lot cheaper also.. oh.. and pro active contains benzoil peroxide.. whereas aspirin contains salicylic acid .. another thing i do as an exfoliate is i scrub my face with an electric toothbrush.. it's sounds kinda weird but it works.. it really cleans out your pores and removes dead skin, oil and dirt.. you can use any scrub ya like or the aspirin i mentioned.. i like to use st. ives.. and i do it about three times a week.. only wash your face when you wake up in the morning, before you go to bed, and after exercise.. excess washing makes your face produce extra oil.. warm water opens pores and cold closes them.. so wash with warm and rinse with cold.. and watch the make up you use.. a mineral make up is much better for your skin.. it doesn't clog your pores or cause break outs.. i recommend bare minerals.. drink lots of water.. eat healthy.. and take vitamin e, vitamin c, zinc and b vitamins.. i hope this helps.."

Cavemantedsis L replied: "u can try tetracycline or doxycycline but it will be better u ask for the doc to prescribe for u whether which type of antibiotics suit u the most..i tht u shld try going for a acne facial which u may want to take a look at 88db in sp0re ..i thht u nd facai to help to clear ur face and squeeze the pimples and reduce the scar....."

Green G replied: "I have researched a lot on this subject. The best I have come up with is a home remedy from Care2.com. I will send you a link there are a couple great recipes that I have tried that work really well. good luck and please give these home remedies a try. peace GG"

Birth Control Pills & Acne? I heard that taking birth control pills can help control acne. Is this true? Has anyone experienced this benefit while on the pill?

mickey g replied: "i never noticed any change. *sigh*"

Me of course replied: "This is said to be true but you will likely gain weight on the pill. So you choose- pizza face? or fatass?"

idonkknow? replied: "it did for me, and i was in a better mood..lol"

z a replied: "if so i need to use it"

Agnostic Gamer replied: "I sure have. Some are better than others. Diane35 is really high in hormone and cleared my face up in like a month, but it is so high it made my periods more painful. I am on Alesse and still have a clear face. Whoever said the pill makes you lose weight is stupid. Yes it does, but it is only like 3 pounds of water weight and it goes away after the first cycle."

Mrs Fulton replied: "MYTH"

delia replied: "yes. but it is just one type of pill (the most common one) and your doctor can tell you about it. Ortho Tri-cyclin"

morglovsya replied: "It works! I was on birth control pills for a year and it helped my acne alot."

Apollo replied: "2 ex-girlfriends taken birth control pills..... but.... one had acne, 50% chances that is true..... but I don`t think it is :D"

CINDY M replied: "I'm on Yaz which has definitely improved my skin."

Phoenix replied: "It can certainly help, but the affects are different for everyone. If your acne is caused by hormones, then regulating hormones with bc can help reduce or eliminate acne. It all depends on what is causing your acne and how your body responds to bc. This is especially true for people who have serious hormonal imbalances. (As for weight, I lost 15 lbs and gained a cup size when I started the pill. Go figure.)"

Moza replied: "that is true, some birth control pills are prescribed for acne problems"

Great Dane replied: "Apparently it does work for some people with certain brands of pills. I haven't had acne problems, but my friend has had good experiences with reduced acne through using the pill."

Caitlin replied: "yes b/c can help acne to an extent. if your problem is really bad, i'd look into an actual perscription. ps. b/c does not affect weight An analysis of 44 randomized, controlled studies found that birth control pills are not linked to excess weight gain. The authors of the study say weight gain is a problem for most people in the United States, but many women have mistakenly been blaming their birth control. "

Allie replied: "I'm on the Nuva Ring and haven't experienced any change in my skin, but that's probably just because I have great skin to begin with. Hormonal birth control does often clear up acne, but in some individuals it can actually make it worse. It depends on your body chemistry and what type of birth control you're on."

sparkcherry666 replied: "yea it might work try it"

kasey06 replied: "I was on birth control, orthotricylen lo, and it cleared up my skin nicely. I had bad acne and now I don't have any! :)"

Birth control pills for acne? I am 16 and I don't have sex but I really want to take some pills to clear up my acne. It is not horrible, but it affects my self-esteem. I've heard birth control pills are very effective and can shorten/lighten/make you have fewer periods. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything else that will work. Accutane is probably too severe and differin makes it so you have to stay out of the sun I think. Also, do I have to go to a dermatologist to get medication? Thanks!

fairygirl1312 replied: "no, if you want to get birth control you'll have to go to a OB/GYN and the brand yaz works well for acne and lighter periods"

enzohawaii replied: "That person who first answered does NOT know they are talking about. You can get birth control from a dermatologist for your acne. I had acne when I was in high school and my dermatologist put me on birth control and he gave me prescriptions every time I needed more. Differein does not really make it so you have to stay out of the sun, you just have to put on sun screen on your face!! I went into the sun without sun screen and it made my face...I don't know how to explain it but it was very painful and not pretty. So YES you can get it from your dermatologist and yes it makes your period shorter, lighter, and less cramping BUT it does NOT make you have fewer periods. You get your period every month still. If that doesn't help you, just send me a message and I'll explain more."

Katzie replied: "Unless you want to regulate periods because of some hormonal imbalance, or you have horrible cramping and major blood loss, do NOT go on birth control just to cure acne. There are a lot better alternatives before going on birth control, and actually it's very common for women to get WORSE acne when going on birth contorl. You are most likely going through the teenage puberty years where your hormones are running wild. I had terrible acne and it clears up as you get older and your body settles down. You need to try different products meant for acne. I've found that Aveeno Clear Complexion Cleansing Pads, work GREAT. Also there are some birth control pills which give you 4 periods a year, it's called Seasonale or Seasonique."

What birth control pills will help with acne but not make me gain weight? I want to start taking birth control pills but i've heard that they make you gain weight and i really don't want to but i've also heard some birth control can help with acne so i was just wondering what one would be the best bet. Thanks!

JAEL replied: "not every1 will gain weight on BC every1 is different it will clear up acne though. when i went on BC (yaz) i lost like 10 lbs and when my sister went on it she ended up gainin like 15 so there's no real answer in my opinion"

Harriet replied: "Not everybody gains weight on birth control pills. I have heard people say different things about different pills so you would have to try one and see how it goes, that's about all you can do. I have heard good things about Yasmin but a friend of mine didn't like it, so it's a very individual thing. I know some friends who didn't gain weight on pills either. Talk it over with your doctor. Diane 35 is specifically made for acne and it's quite low dose, so you might like to think of that one."

Michelle replied: "okay well deff talk to your doctor bc everyone is different but the one that works for me is OthoTri-CyclenLo.. i haven't gained weight and my face has gotten noticibly clearer! they should help you find which pill is right for you tho and you can tell then that those are the effects that you're looking for in a pill.. good luck : )"

cosmo_gurl replied: "you gain weight while on the birth control because there is a lot more water retention. believe it or not but most of our weight is water. every medicine is going to have its pros and cons. personally birth controls give me more pros than cons. if ur scared about the weight gain maybe u should start exercising more."

Lettie replied: "Each woman will react differently as far as weight gain on the pill. For me, I had the best luck on Yaz for clearing acne and maintaining my weight. You may also want to try Ortho-Tri-Cyclen. Talk to your doctor to see what the best option for you is. Good luck!"

Can Birth control pills cause acne? I was prescribed birth control pills about 2 weeks ago. I am on Loestrin 24 Fe 1mg. I am not a teenager. I am in my mid 30's and I've always had bad break out during my menstrual cycles. That is one of the reasons I wanted to take the pill. However, I'm battling acne and I am wondering if this pill is increasing the acne flair ups? Does anyone have an answer or a suggestion?

elle replied: "i would go ask my doctor because birth control cleared my acne within a week."

SilentRank replied: "I don't believe that they can cause acne flair ups. For the first couple of months of taking birth control pills things will be irregular, until your body adjusts to the pill. So it might just be that your menstrual cycle is going to come. When I first started birth control pills the same thing happened to me, but it was just my cycle. I just didn't expect it , but it's normal in the beginning. If it continues you could talk to your Dr to have your prescription changed."

cal replied: "Yes. Birth control pills can cause you to have acne. Everybody reacts differently to medicine, and while the pill can be said to clear your skin, depending on the type of birth control you take, it can also cause your skin to get worse. I took Logyan (sp? It's been awhile since I took it and I think i might have misspelled it.) and it caused me to break out severely, whereas before taking the pill my acne was not as bad. You can ask your doctor for a type that will not cause you to break out (this is what I did after I went back for another prescription), they have specific types that can also help prevent acne and also work as a birth control. Hope this helps."

What birth control pills help with Acne? I've heard that most birth control pills can help with Acne. If you know of some that do work for this purpose--what are they? Thanks = ]
