What is a latex allergy in relation to fruit intolerance? please can you tell me why a latex allergy would link to a fruit intolerance

bbclackfire34 replied: "I have a mild latex allergy, but I never heard of people being fruit intolerant because of the latex allergy. Maybe it isn't related."

M360 replied: "I couldn't believe your question when I read this because no doctors tell you this until you have a really bad allergic reation. You need to look into this on google. Last year from out of nowhere I got an anaphylactic reaction while eating a tomato, rushed to the hospital. Told them what happened and the first thing they said is oh, you have latex allergies. Which I do, they are in the same family. Yep they are. Now here is the best, didn't realize that grapes were, so five days later ate a grape and the same thing happened. That's when I went to google and researched and there it was. Certain fruits break down in the system the same way, same proteins. Since taking long term prednisone, I can now eat a tomato, or a grape. But the latex is worse than ever. So beware, at any time or place you can get crossover reactions. Look on the site below they list all the foods that you can have reactions to if you have latex allergies, the list is alot. So be careful."

joey replied: "check out what you are experiencing is called Oral Allergy Syndrome"

wtptoo replied: "Many fruits have a protein that is almost identical to the proteins in latex. So some people will be "cross reactive". The worse the latex allergy the more likely fruit allergies will develop. There are a number of possible cross reactive fruits, but the most common ones are bananas, strawberries, kiwi & avacado. For me the banana allergy was only an itchy feeling on the tongue. My allergist told me to never eat banana again because I developed latex allergy. Well I accidently got banana exposure twice since. Once where it just touched my skin and my face swelled up and I got itchy all over. Another time a friend got me ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery and apparently it came in contact with banana because I went anaphylactic. When you start getting like this you need to talk to your dr about getting an Epi Pen and you need to carry Benedryl with you when you are away from home."

If you have a latex allergy, do you also have a reaction to fruit? Do you do anything to counteract the reaction to fruit, or do you just avoid fruit? I know that there is cross reactivity. Just wondering if anyone else hates their allergy and terribly misses fruit like I do! I think I might need to clarify. I know that cross reactivity exists. I've read a ton of stuff online. Just want to know how other people handle it.

Althea replied: "Yes, but only to certain fruits. I think it's melons because my doc asked me if I was allergic to latex after I found out I was allergic to melons. Contact an allergist. They can test you for all common fruits."

jewel.c replied: "If you have a latex allergy you can cross react with fruits like bananas, avocados, and kiwi. Read this: "

Fruit/Latex Crossover Allergy? Hi, I believe I have the fruit/latex crossover allergy. I am currently undiagnosed, though I do have an appointment with an allergist in August. I used to just be allergic to bananas but now it has widened to tomatoes, apples, melons, etc. Because this allergy is spreading to other fruits, I'm kinda scared to eat any. My question is, does this allergy only pertain to raw fruits or is the component I am allergic to dissolved when the fruit/vegetable is cooked? Also, is there a shot or medicine you can take to lessen the reaction so that you are able to eat a piece of fruit every once in a while? I know I can ask all these questions in August when I see the allergist, but if there is a way around it, I'd like to know earlier...I'm missing prime fruit season! I would try different fruits to see which I am allergic to, but my reaction is pretty severe with abdominal cramps and tightness of the chest. I just want to see if there are other ways to eat the fruit that would not cause the reaction.

Jade replied: "I don't think by changing the fruit, you can change the allergy. What makes a person allergic to something cannot be genetically changed. You can get certain allergy shots -but usually only after you've had the reaction and it is generally a steroid used to reduce swelling. Taking the same shot before eating the fruit will not have the same effect. Really, sometimes a small amount will not effect you. I know a person allergic to peanuts, and sometimes they eat just a few and do not have a reaction. However, they can't eat an entire Mr. Goodbar without their throat swelling up. I would test one fruit at a time, this way you know for sure which ones you do have a reaction to. Maybe it is not all of them and you will be able to enjoy certain fruits. It would also be helpful so you have a pretty complete list when you see your allergist."

Does anyone have an infant with latex allergy? What foods cross-react? My baby is almost 6 months old. She was breastfed until a few weeks ago, but she literally seemed allergic to everything I ate. I elimninated dairy, beef, soy, chicken, fish, nuts, wheat, and eggs, and she was still having a terrible reaction to something I ate. An allergist put her on Neocate, which seemed to solve the problem at first. But after a week the problems started to return (incl. face rash, extreme fussiness, projectile vomiting, coughing and retching immediately after a bottle, etc.). Then we discovered she has a latex allergy to the bottle nipples! Since we switched to silicone, the problem is completely solved. However, we're now starting to introduce solids. She's only had rice cereal so far, which she tolerates well. But I've read that avocade, banana, and other tropical fruits can cross-react with latex, and that carrots, potatoes, and apples sometimes do too. Has anyone faced this problem? Was your latex-allergic infant able to tolerate those foods? (I was eating lots of carrots, potatoes, and apples while breastfeeding, so that could have explained the continuing problem. And only small amounts pass through breastmilk. Now I'm afraid she'll have a severe reaction if she ingests even a small amount of these foods directly.) Also, we have not introduced any foods except rice cereal to her. The others were all foods in MY diet while breastfeeding. To clarify, my dietary changes while breastfeeding were all made under the supervision of several doctors (pediatrician, allergist, and consulting neurologist). We don't actually believe she's allergic to all those foods (chicken, wheat, etc.), but the allergy symptoms were worsening quickly and had progessed to coughing, gagging, and projective vomiting immediately after each feeding. She's started refusing her bottle, and at that point she hadn't begun solids so the bottle refusal was alarming. She also had terrible gas, green poop, etc. The allergist said the only way I could try to continue breastfeeding was to try an elimination diet until we found the culprit(s). We never did - the only one we know for sure is latex, and the allergist said it can be cross-reactive with certain fruits and vegetables. I'm aware that an immature digestion can cause similar-sounding problems, but in her case it definitely is a food allergy. That's why the Neocate helped immediately.

clock replied: "Hi Blueskin.., I am really concerned about your baby's allergies and the diagnostic process. So you have eliminated dairy, beef, foy, chicken, fish, nuts, wheat, and eggs. Can she eat any thing? My feeling is that diagnostic process is wrong. When foods are introduced to babies they (all babies) initially burp, throw up, and have partially formed stool because their digestive tracts are immature. My suggestion is that you wait and let the doctors come to the conclusion that your baby is allergic after you report the symptoms. My fear is that you are making the diagnosis on the baby's "throwing up" etc which are symptoms of an immature gastrointestinal tract and not necessarily the symptoms of allergies. Good luck."

caz replied: "Hi- we have a number of food allergies(including anaphyaxis and oral allergy syndrome) in our household. People with latex allergy can often have an oral allergy syndrome and symptoms to the foods you mention-including banana, melons, avocado, kiwi, and chestnuts. Its due to a reaction to the proteins in the foods which is very similar to that in latex. The symptoms normally are confined to the mouth and lips and generally dont cause anaphylaxis personally i would be steering clear of these things until you can get sound advice from your allergist-there's still plenty of other foods that she can try other than these ones! The process of working out what a 6 month old is or isn't allergic to can be very difficult when the only exposure to other food they've had is from your breast milk. As with anything with children predisposed to allergic reactions-whenever you introduce a new food go very slowly-a tiny bit on the lip the first day, a little bit more the next-slow, slowly slowly! and obviously only one new food at a time so you can work out what if anything she is reacting to. this would be especially relevant to the foods known to cross react with latex allergy. Good luck-although it is scary remember that you are lucky in that you already know that there could be a reaction of some sort-that means you are ready and not caught unawares (I was!). This means you can go very slowly and pick your times when new foods are introduced (eg not on a friday night of a holiday weekend-wont do that again!)-early in the day and perhaps at times when there is a 2nd person around-not always possible I know-but at least you are aware and ready for what ever crops up. Check with your allergist though-its a shame to restrict children's diets unnecessarily-you allergist knows your child's personal risk better than anyone here. cheers and good luck caz PS forgot to add-we have allergies to barley (anaphylaxis)-similar in structure to wheat, rye-can now eat both without reaction although he did originally have rye grain allergy which has been outgrown. allergy to peanuts (oas-severe with anaphylaxis) but can get peas, soy etc without problems so it just really depends on the individual."

latex/condom allergy...could it be? ok, i have food allergies; i'm allergic to many fruits....well earlier, my husband and i had sex with a new type of condom (trojan's mint tingle), and i performed oral on him...i noticed that there was a lot of the condom's lubricant still on him when i started....now, i have this weird feeling in my throat...i guess kinda like the feeling when one says they have a knot or lump in their throat. so could this be an allergy to latex, or just the lube inside the condom?? i'm kinda lost, so any info would be helpful. thanks in advance! PS- we've done this many times and that has never happened, but we don't use condoms that often....when we do, they're usually different types we experiment with

JOHNNY M replied: "yes you can be allergic to latex you might want to try the natural condoms"

JJ replied: "I wouldnt say it is allergies. If you want to know for sure go see a allergy doctor to find out. To tell you the truth I thinks its more of a gag reflex than anything. My wife had that same problem but it went away and we didnt think anything of it."

chilly replied: "flavoured condoms are very well known for the irritations they can cause. sounds like an irritation rather then an allergy... to see if you are allergic, try rubbing a new mint tingle condom (lube side out) on different parts of your body. it may feel a little silly, but it will show up on your skin if you have an allergy within 24hours. otherwise, there is an excellent chance of irritation, so... avoid that particular brand of flavoured condoms - the good news is that there are millions of varietys to try out!"

solipsist0 replied: "It sounds like an allergy to me - and I should know, I've got hundreds. You shouldn't need to use a condom during oral sex, if it's your husband - unless you suspect he's cheating on you?"

People with allergies/environmental sensitivities: How do you manage? My allergies are peanuts, nuts, soy, latex, and other seeds and fruits. I am sensitive to toxins/chemicals in the air such as off-gassing from new rugs. Wondering if there is anyone who deals with something like this, and how would you travel? We're planning a 14 hour drive, and I don't want to miss it, but I don't want to go and be completely stressed out the whole time. Please answer only if you have similar conditions (you or a family member). Thank you.

What are you allergic to? I've got a lot of allergies. Beginning to think my body is quite fragile. I'm allergic to: Latex (which has cross reactivity that causes other allergies) Fruit and some vegetables Tree pollen Sulfa Nickel And I found out the hard way that I'm allergic to another medication now. Goody. Yeah, my fruit allergy sucks. I have borderline high cholesterol, so I'm trying to figure out what foods I can eat. Everyone keeps saying, "Fruit is a good option!" Slightly frustrating. Especially considering I LOVE mangoes and bananas. :(

sonofstar replied: "I can empathize in a big way. I have an allergy for every season and several in between. I have classic hay fever, am allergic to grass and rag weed quite badly in the summer, leaf mold and dust in the fall and of course dust, dust mites, mildew and every mold under the sun (have been tested for all of the above). I'm allergic to morphine, biaxin and flonase for meds. Am allergic to beef and wheat for foods. I'm also highly allergic to cigarette smoke. What I've learned from my husband (a research scientist) is that the tendency towards this degree of allergic sensitivity was most likely set up by exposure to toxins while in the womb. My mother was a proof reader in the late 50's and ink in those days was made up of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium. They're 4 of the worst heavy metals known. They have all been found to prevent the baby's immune system from developing properly leading to lifelong allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders and the like. Having that many allergies and sensitivities does indeed make one feel quite fragile. It's as if you need to live in a bubble because the world is toxic for you."

We're talking moldy food on the kitchen counter, animal and baby feces in every room, beer bottles everywhere... I'm glad I got out of that sh--hole. Yeah so basically mine has nothing to do with the too clean thing guaranteed. I thought that applied more to asthma (?). Plus you can develop allergies at anytime, so who really knows for sure what all the factors are behind why we develop allergies against some substances/chemicals and not others."

Severe allergies, asthma, hayfever and eczema?(answer only if you know about this please)? please help me. On a daily basis my skin is inflamed and itchy and sore, i find it hard to breathe because my chest is tightcongested and ive taken three incidents of anaphalactic shock in the past year. I take strong prescibed antihistimines for my hives and itching . I take a preventative inhaler called seretide 250 m dose 4 times a day I shower and bath in oilatum and use coal tar shampoo. I apply betnovate and eumovate 3/4 times a day plus oliatum moisturisers. Since 4 years old i have had blood tests that confirmed i am serves allergic to shell fish, soy, eggs, milk, beans, peanuts, grass, pet hair, dust, latex, kiwi fruit, avacado and oranges. Im also senstivie to most cleaning products, air freshners (which cause asthma attacks) pollution, perfumes, lanolin, nickel and soap powder . BUT despite seeing some if the best doc and profs in the UK my allergies get worse every day. Just ten mins ago i came out in a horrible rash then hives, i took a shower and applied creams but my skin is swollen and red from head to toe and i find it hard to breathe. My face has went red and my body was burning up. Ive taken a real strong antihistimine and it worked but i thought i was going to have to take my epipen and go to A and E. There seems to be occasional times when im so normal. But now there seems to be no explination to these attacks. The GP has given me a stronger dose inhaler and stronger steroids but its as if my body gets immune to these and my allergic reactions just get worse and worse. please give me some advice if you have had similar experiences with atopic. Thank you xx

That one chick... replied: "Hospital. Go. Now."

melody replied: "I have had similar problems in the past and am free of them now . For your skin it can help to take omega 3, and vitiman E supplements. There is an over the counter thing called viscopaste which is a zinc bandage that can help calm eczema. Apart from steroids there is another prescription ointment called Protopic, which my dermatologist recommended to me and this was effective for me. I also had photolight therapy for eczema- basically sunbeds- in a very controlled environment- but with these there is a risk of cancer which has to be considered. Keeping your home envirornment dust free helps with athsma but otherwise I don't know much. Oilatum is good, another good brand for dry skin is Eucerin. Best of luck!"

froglady replied: "Sorry you're having such a rough time. I have some of the same symptoms but not nearly as bad as yours. Have you been tested for Lupus? That's what my doctor diagnosed me with ( other problems too). Hope you find relief soon."

asseenfromoutside replied: "My wife used to suffer with eczema. not as bad as yours sounds and for years there was the daily grind of betnovate and stuff but to no avail. Then by sheer chance she called to see her mother at her OAP home at the same time as a faith healer was visiting. my wife was persuaded to see him. needless to say she has never looked back. the eczema has go bar one small patch that occasionally flares up on her left elbow. I don't say this will work for you but can it make things worse?"

clueless replied: "From what you are describing in definitely sounds like you need to get some medical attention on an immediate basis. But I have had allergy problems, skin problems in the past (granted, they were not as severe as what you are experiencing) and I found a lady who treats allergies naturally and it worked for me after nothing else did. My step mother who was bordering on Type II diabetic, after seeing the results on me also went to her and it handled her allergies as well. She does NAET Allergy Treatment, Nutrition/Detoxification & Metabolic Typing. What she does handles the source of the allergy, not just suppressing the body's reaction to what your body thinks or is actually a poison for it, which is what antihistamine drugs and steroids do. She is in the UK. Let me know if you want to contact her as I know she would be fine to talk and see what she can do for you."

BlueJay replied: "Stress makes it worse. And if you are itching and miserable, you are stressed so it is a vicious cycle my doctor told me. If your allergy load is high then you will react strongly to things much faster. When it's low you can get by with things that may ordinarily set your allergies off. There often seems to be no rhyme nor reason to why you react to things and you cannot pin anything down for future avoidance. The coal tar treatments absolutely caused severe breaking out for me, much worse than usual daily eczema. Usually oils are not good for anyone with sensitive skin. They cause burning and itching in many of us. Steroids have no effect anymore and actually cause flare ups. Also I did not do well with Protopic or Elidel. The one thing that I have found to help somewhat after a lifetime of misery with this is when I finally found out I had Hashimoto's thyroiditis and started taking a natural form of thyroid supplement (prescription) daily. And leaving sugar completely alone is one of the main things that helps give me relief. Some artificial sweeteners cause reactions in some people, I've heard. I don't do well with them and many other food additives cause me problems. I would say that we are very alike except for the asthma which I don't have, but have more allergies to foods and chemicals, etc. than you list. One other thing you might check is if you have a skin scraping done for the lab to check for staphlococcus or yeasts. A lingering, mildly sore strep throat once kept my eczema constantly flared up until I took an antibiotic. I understand your problems very well and wish you better health. I hope this helps a little."

You can get free alkaline water, place a add on and then ask for 8.5 PH alkaline water in a wanted add. I know a person with 2 square feet of psoriasis on his skin 3 months ago. It is almost all gone at this time. He has suffered from this for many years. (more than 50 years) Good Luck!"

Unusual allergic reaction, any suggestions or ideas what is happening? I have been having an allergic reaction off and on for about a month. I had started then stopped these products when I learned it could cause allergies eating egg beaters, using salicylic acid on skin, eating fresh fruit, etc. We do have mold in our home, now I wonder about this being an irritant. Initially stopping these things helped but now its back again. I thought taking bactrim had started the reaction about two weeks ago, I stopped taking it, and these symptoms went away for days, about 4 days later it came back so I wonder was I allergic? I will stop eating or using a medicine and things seem to get better, then around 2 days later this itch and lump in throat will come back even though I no longer use what I thought might have caused the problem. I went to the doctor, he thinks possibly it's something I'm eating or using, such as shampoo, skin care, etc. as I changed my diet drastically and used some new products in last 30 days. I reviewed medicines I take with him that I've taken for years, he said anything was possible but doesn't think it's the meds. The itch was only on my arms, belly, back and hands, occasionally a small part of my lip would swell, this itch (huge spots) was never below my waist. I change to dye/perfume free laundry detergent, this helps it seems, but now makes no difference. The last 3 days I have been eating what I normally have and things are better, but this is how this reaction has been going for quite some time, it happens badly at night (sometimes morning) and about every 2-3 days. I no longer itch but have a lump in my throat. I have taken benadryl every night recently thinking to avoid the symptoms of itching. He gave me hydroxyzine which I'm afraid to take after reading how it affects you and I wonder if I'm being silly. I guess I am curious to whether anyone else has had this problem. I have some allergies, latex, penicllin, aspartame, benzol peroxide. Some of the things I've thought like egg beaters was responsible, however I have always eaten regular eggs with no problems and occasionally used salicylic acid. Has anyone ever developed a reaction to medicine they have taken for 10 years or longer? Most my meds I have taken this long, some longer. The doctor said anything was possible to investigate it on my own. Thanks ahead of time for any answers or suggestions.

Tim W replied: "It's probably the Bactrim but it could be anything. Try to isolate the cause."

A&E replied: "Hi I thought I was the only person in the world who is experiencing this. I don't have the lump in my throat, but if I am not getting an injection once a month or taking a predisone regimen 2 times a month, my upper body especially my face and neck , starts off as hives, and then turns into these red flat patchy spots. I've changed my personals, medicine, foods, and even stop smoking......No your not being silly, because some things that I have developed allergies to, I am always cautious of what I consume, and everything else. I am about to go to an Allergen Dr. and change my Dermatologist."
