Is the sulphur in MSM (a dietary supplement) the same as that in Metabisulfites (a food preservative)? The reason I am asking is that I have joint problems, and would like to try taking the MSM supplement, but I am allergic to Metabisulfites (the preservative). I was just wondering if MSM contains elemental sulphur (found in all living things) and if Metabisulfites contain a different form of sulphur. Help!!

Kevin P replied: "their is only 1 kind of sulfur, what you are allergic to is the metabisulfite compound (which contains sulfur) you are not allergic to the actual sulfur"

oldtimekid2 replied: "No, not at all. MSM is Methylsulfonylmethane... it's a completely different chemical makeup than the Metabisulfates. However, if you have a reaction to the Metabisulfates because of the Sulfur (which is rare, but possible), then you would have a reaction to any Sulfur-based product. You should be able to get allergy tested at a clinic if needed, but if that's not an option, I would suggest just trying a small dose (like 200-500 mg) of it. More than likely, you won't have any negative reaction, but it's better to test with smaller doses. Good luck!"

Paul V - CNCAhealth.com replied: "They're differently different. MSM is a naturally occurring, sulfur containing organic compound found primarily in fresh fruits and vegetables and in every cell of the human body."

Where to buy Nature's Blend Dietary Supplement MSM ? I want to know where I can buy Nature's Blend Dietary Supplement ; Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM) 1000 mg. here in Cebu or in any part of the Philippines. Thank You and God bless

Is this "Pure MSM" supplement as fabulous as they say? My neighbour just presented me with a leaflet on a dietary supplement called "pure Organic Sulfur", or "Pure MSM". Apparently, it's 99.5% Methylsulfonylmethane and about 0.5% water ("moisture" say call it). It's supposed to help against just about any malady known to man, and has been recommended by my neigbour's dentist. Is anyone here in any position to appraise just how seriously I should take that stuff? Is it as good as it sounds, or would you file it under quackery of the 17th century?

oldtimekid2 replied: "I wouldn't say it's THAT fabulous, but it sounds like that's one of the only products they sell, so they have to make bigger claims to get people to buy them. LOL! MSM is an organic form of Sulfur (and the 99% is normal for most brands) and Sulfur is a mineral that the body needs to function, so it is very good. The main benefits are that it helps nourish the joints, skin, and connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, etc). Granted, nourishing the tissues may help with other things and Sulfur deficiency could cause a number of negative effects (which is likely why it "cured" all those "diseases" in the pamphlet... they were actually deficient in Sulfur). In any case, you can get a bottle of MSM from any good quality company (a 1-5,000 mg dose throughout the day is pretty normal) and I'm sure you'll save yourself a lot more than what they're asking. Good luck and I hope I helped!"

in dietary supplement what is the difference between chondroitin sulfate 1200mg and msm1500mg? glocosmine HCI 1500mg with MSM 1500mg and glucosamine HCI 1500mg chondroitin sulfate 1200mg

oldtimekid2 replied: "Well, the overly simple answer is that they are entirely different ingredients. For more specific details, Chondroitin is more commonly with Glucosamine because those are two of the main nutrients your body uses to produce new joint tissues. In other words, it gives your body what it needs to fix the joints on its own. MSM on the other hand is one of the nutrients that your body uses to nourish connective tissues. The connective tissues include the joints, skin, ligaments, tendons, etc... but it doesn't help your body rebuild any of them. By nourishing the connective tissues, it helps the joints feel better and be healthier, same with the skin and the rest. Because of those differences, most formulations will have Glucosamine and Chondroitin together (since they work hand in hand) or they will have those two plus MSM to nourish the tissues while they are being built. I hope I helped!"

Does a Glucosamine MSM Complex really help with sore knees from running? It also has Collagen Type II. I understand what preventative measures I can take to support my knees and prevent injury. I am just mainly questioning this expensive dietary supplement. Does it help?

Kristen K replied: "i've been taking glucosamine for the past two months, and i haven't noticed any difference yet. once the bottle is empty, i won't buy a new one. doesn't seem like it's worth it."

You know those dietary supplements intended for adults? Are they okay for 14 year olds? Like B - 12, VITAMIN A, and MSM? pills. It says on the bottle its for adults but it doesnt say the age limit or anything. Am I ok to take these pills?

Zambiti replied: "For the most part you are old enough for adult sized doses as long as you are of average size for your age. Watch the Vit A. If you start getting headaches, you may be getting too much Vit A. I've actually given my younger children larger doses than the USRDA for many supplements for adults when they needed them to treat specific things - such as viruses, transport issues, etc. Each person is an individual. You might consult someone knowledgeable in vitamins and supplements before putting yourself on too many. Unnecessary supplementation isn't very helpful and just costs money which might be better spent elsewhere. ;-)"

Which vitamins are actually beneficial, taking into consideration my needs? I am taking a range of supplements, in an attempt to help mend my health-related woes. I'm taking... MSM for skin and hair, Iron for a possible Iron deficiency (the symptoms fit), St. John's Wort for mood stimulation, Vitamin C to help aid the iron absorption, Pantothenic Acid for adrenal fatigue, Ginseng and Gotu Kola for adrenal fatigue, and a multivitamin. A man who worked in a nutrition shop I go to suggested that I take the Pantothenic Acid and Ginseng & Gotu Kola for my adrenal fatigue, so that's what I've been doing. However, it's been a few weeks (perhaps I'm impatient) and I'm am not noticing a difference. I just bought a supplement designed specifically for Adrenal Health. So, I was wondering, should I take this supplement while continuing with the Pantothenic Acid and Ginseng & Gotu Kola? Also, how important are B Complex vitamins? I have heard they are a great help when energy is low, should I take B complex V's also? The Iron I am taking has a certain amount of B, but should I take a B complex as an additional dietary supplement?

nysenutz replied: "You will get all this and more in a correct diet, more cheaply too. Get yourself to a dietitian and have a fab diet made out specially for you. You will enjoy it as well. Basically; meat, fresh vegetables and fruit with cereals. You do need a few grams of fat per day, so you must have that, too. See that dietitian."

tennislover replied: "i would say only be concerned with omega 369... some sort of antioxidant supplment, a b vitamin and thats all really the rest is good eating"

oldtimekid2 replied: "Vitamins are essential to living... if you didn't have enough intake of Vitamins and minerals, you would be severely deficient over time and that leads to not only health problems, but people have died from deficiencies (it's actually quite common in 3rd world countries). That being said, if the bottle says to take 6 a day, it's generally best to stick with the recommendation on the bottle. Good luck and I hope I helped!"
