How long does Neurontin stay in your system? And is it considered a controlled substance such as speed? I have to take a drug test today. I took a non-prescribed Neurontin pill yesterday, will it effect my drug test if they are testing for narcotics such as speed, opiates, etc.

jayhawker replied: "First things first, I would ask why you took a non-prescribed Neurontin. Gabapentin, tradename Neurontin, is an anti-seizure medication which is also used to treat certain (and very specific) pain conditions. Its dosing needs to be closely regulated, and there are a couple of very serious but rare side effects including a life-threatening rash and in fact, seizures. If you took the pill from someone who is prescribed Neurontin, you need to understand that that person has likely already been started on a lower dose of the drug and worked up to the higher dose. That said, Neurontin has an elimination half-life of 5-7 hours, if you have healthy kidneys. That means that half of the drug will be gone from your system in 7 hours, 75% gone in 14 hours, 87.5% gone in 21 hours, etc. As far as I know, commercial drug tests do not routinely screen for Neurontin and I don't believe there is any cross-reactivity with controlled substances. Moral of the story: DO NOT TAKE MEDICATIONS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU!"

Why would I take neurontin for swelling and pain in my hand? My right hand swells up well, engorges, really while I sleep. Only my right hand. My Dr. said it was not corpal tunnel. I was checked for blood clots. I am not diabetic nor do I have shingles. He gave me a compression glove to manage swelling, but when my hand starts to swell at night the pain gets excruciating when i have the glove on. so when I went back. to him he tried to get me Lyrica but my Ins. wouldnt pay. So he prescribed Neurontin. One before bedtime. I took one last night and I am still Loopey. He didnt explain to me anything about the medicine. Is it a narcotic? How does it work? How would it help the swelling?

David B replied: "That stuff is horrible and has terrible side effects - get something different or get a different doctor."

PG1626 replied: "Yea - What David B said."

Celestia X replied: "Neurontin dulls or eliminates nerve pain. It is not a narcotic and does not pose any risk of addiction. However, if you are experiencing side-effects (like "feeling loopy," as you described), then you should stop taking the medication right away and talk to your doctor so that, together, you will be able to come up with another alternative for treatment. Also, seeking a second (or even third!) opinion from different general practitioners, and even different specialists, never hurts!"

Dr. Mitch Katz replied: "Neurontin is a medicine developed to prevent seizures. It is not a narcotic. It is thought to help some people with pain, especially neuropathic pain (pain due to problems with the nerves). It would not be expected to change the swelling of your hand. Given how it made you feel, talk to your doctor about whether to continue or try something else. Good luck."

Wendy V replied: "This medication is an anti-convulsant drug. But can help with dialating the blood vessels. Reducing swelling by allowing effeciant blood flow again and therfore reducing pain. tell your Doctor about the side effects as soon as you can. I can't find Lyrica in my MIMS because the US have a lot of drugs we don't and different names."

Born2Bloom replied: "I was prescribed it for nerve pain and inflammation. I could not take it either. The lyrica does seem to help though. I am very surprised your ins. won't pay for it. I am on Vt. medicaid and they will even pay for it. I would not take any more of the neurontin. A lot of times if the doctor calls the insurance co. and makes a special request it makes a difference too. I am on a med. that they would not pay for but are know that the doctor made a request."

Tramadol vs Neurontin? I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have been taking Tramadol for my pain. My body is becoming immune to it so I am having to take more then is prescribed for me. My doctor switched me to Neurontin. Do you know what works better for pain? Can I mix the Tramadol and the Neurontin? Does the Neurontin give you the feeling like narcotics such as Percocet or Vicodin?

Sociopath replied: "I don't think these compare at all... tramadol is more associated with pain releif of things like vicodin, as to where neortnoin effects pain in ur brain..."

NEURONTIN for Pain Control? Did it work for you and any immediate side effects like with narcotics? Just a quick question? I have been having some really bad period pains and have taken different medications..... #1 being lortab which worked; but doctor doesn't want me taking them. Than I tried something else that gave me side effects so my doctors office just called and said he wants me to try 'Neurontin.' Have done research that this is used for seizures but in my case will be used for pain control? Does this work like narcotics? What are the side effects or immediate effects....because I know Lortabs worked so i'm not sure how to react in starting this medication? What do you think?

J.P.H replied: "Neurontin (gabapentin) is a drug that is used to treat seizures. It has also been widely used as pain control. Neurontin has also been used for the treatment of anxiety. For pain, it is not a narcotic or related in any way to narcotics, such as Lortab. It will act on nerve impulses, from what I believe. When I used it, it caused heavy sedation, 300mg was the dose, so be careful w. it."

Kim k replied: "I certainly wouldn't take anymore hydrocodone for period pain and completely understand the doctor not prescribing more. They wouldn't be a very good doctor if they did. You can console yourself with that fact. Neurontin (gabapentin) is a good idea. It works for some and not for others but you won't know until you give it a few weeks. It may make you drowsy for the first few weeks until you get used to it. but give it a shot, if it doesn't work for you the doctor will probably have you try one of several other similiar meds. Yes, it's an anti-convulsant but about 10 years ago they found that it is effective as a pain med for some problems. Give it a couple of weeks, it usually works very well for "period pain". I used to just live with it but started taking Neurontin for something else and the pain I was used to having when I had a period or ovulated completely went away."

GodBlessAmerica replied: "I have never heard of it being given for menstrual cramps. That is very strange. This med you are talking about is a nerve blocker for back pain. It is totally non narcotic but there is a lot of law suits against them because of the very bad side affects. You should just take Aleeve or something over the counter. It's not worth taking anything dangerous for a day of bad cramps. Over the counter meds should be helpful enough to help you get through the worst part of your cramps."

my narcotic? I have had an on going battle with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), what a mouth full, for the past 3 to 4 years. I recently was put back on the remission list after relapsing 3 times, well my neurologist just put my on Neurontin® (gabapentin) for nerve pain. My big concern is addiction, because I know that Neurontin® is highly addictive. So how can I prevent dependence on this narcotic?

Susan M replied: "neurontin is not a narcotic, I took it, and it did not do a thing for me, I now take lyrica along with narcotics such as hydrocodone, methadone, soma. I was taking morphine that was no help. I have never had a problem with addictions. When you are in pain there is no such thing as addicitons to a medication,, we call it a dependant because it helps with the pain. Even if you were addticted they can take you off slowly. I myself just stop taking when they are no help anymore."

carmen v replied: "I checked on the web since I had not heard of this drug. I don't see anywhere that it is addictive, but it has many scary side effects. I agree that pain should be treated and deal with any habituation to a drug when the pain issue is resolved. I would give it a good try, taking according to instructions. If it helps, it could be worth risks. How is your prognosis for recovery? I hope you get better and this may be the key medication. Did this follow a viral infection? I put links to RainDrop Treatment for you to check if interested in natural therapies in addition to what you are doing to manage this difficult condition."

Have been prescribed "Neurontin" for Pain,Epilepsy, Etc...This Drug Is A KILLER!? I was given Neurontin to help control nerve pain, Dr.s seem to push this drug in mass quantities to avoid giving narcotic pain killers. After a few moths on this drug the pain was worse and I had become deeply depressed! My every thought was of suicide. At first I thought it was the constant pain from my neck and back until I stopped the Neurontin because it was not helping with the pain and I did not like the other side effects. After stopping the Neurontin my depression started to lift after a week or so. I did some digging and found that there had been warnings put out about this nasty ,evil drug. The Last thing a person suffering from Chronic pain or mental illness needs is a drug that DOUBLES the suicide rate of those who are on it! My older brother was also taking HUGE amounts Neurontin for his Bipolar/schizophrenia , I begged him to get off this drug, but he said it helped with his shaking hands caused by other drugs. Less then 1 year later , he Killed Himself at 43, Here is a link to some info on this ,...

hí í'm k♥rчllє (cαrσl) - replied: "No Dr's dont push this to avoid the pain killers, they prescribe it for NERVE pain. The pill itself --IT is NOT a Killer- Some people react differently to different medications and some have very negative effects. do believe it was a severe reaction and that is why you felt suicidal... It isnt right for you to be "Claiming' this. Why did you continue to take it if it was sooo bad? I was on it, it did help me, but I found that another medication worked better. and ultimately decided to have surgery.. for a couple medical devices to help with extreme pain. I am very sorry to hear about your brother- but this medication has no warning of suicide- and the fact you said he had mental problems was probably the reason for his demise- your claim would be hard to prove. (but possible) Unfortunatley, you said that he was on other meds, and that could be a factor too. I dont totally believe that the meds cause people to kill hemselves but I have heard of the extremes. NO, I am NOT doubting that your story is true. I am not saying that at all,but I was on this medication for years, and i know others that were on it and didnt have this reaction. I think you probably misdiagnosed and giving the wrong medication, same with your brother. This medication was not for him and led to a tragedy. But many people take this medication without this claim. It was Smart of you to listen to your own body though- You didnt feel right and so you got off of the meds I do have a question. You said that You had nerve pain? How are you doing? Has anything been done? I would like to chat with you about treatments that I have had - that may or may not help you. I like you did nto want anymore meds and so I talked to my dr after I did some research it's always best to be Proactive in your care.- I have dealt with this for 22yrs. i have recently had a surgery and a bad result -in which I was offered Lyrica (precursor to neurontin- I am taking it but a very low dose- I could be on a really HIGH dose, but I dont want to be on these expensive nerve meds. I am only 45. I am sick of it. Sorry, I know we are not discussing ME! I jsut get caught up in this stuff sometimes! Let's talk plz. I do understand your feelings, but dont agree with the claim. Plz dont fault me for that, instead - let's talk. my best friend is on it for Bipolar also and loves it??? I could refer her to you if youwould like to talk to her too. I"

What do you think about neurontin? I was prescribed as a mood stabilizer, which i didn't understand cuz i am not bi polar, i was only diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and ADD. I take zoloft for the depression and several months ago I decided to quit taking my adderall just cuz I didn't want to be on a narcotic for the rest of my life. I'm only 25....I feel much better with it and all, but I just at least want to try my best with out it first...anyway, as I was saying...they started me on neurontin and i'm about 5"6', 125lb...at an initial dose of 1,600mg a day. After researching I came to find the starting dose is almost never over 600mg! I have had sooo many weird side effects that's I had to quickly see the doc so I can begin getting off of it. Can someone please tell me your experience with this drug and how it has helped or hurt you, etc...it would be greatly appreciated!

Lindsay replied: "All I know is that my Mom was on it for neck problems and it made her a Zombie (extremely tired, unable to focus). She wasn't on it for very long as the side effects were too many."

cowboydoc replied: "I don't know where either you or the first answer are but, neurontain is the weaker of the two Lyrica usually prescribed for damaged nerves from an injury like a back injury. The Lyrica is the stronger and works wonders while the neurontain is the cheaper and works but at a diminished rate. I have never heard of anyone having any side affects from either of these drugs and only from healing and finally finding comfort. But, everyones different and if it bothers you, stop but, let your doctor know."

Amanda replied: "First of all.. from someone who's studied pharmacy- Adderal is not a narcotic. It's a psychostimulant. Basically amphetamine salts. As for the Neurontin, it made me an absolute zombie. I slept for 18 hours a day and wasn't able to do anything productive the rest of it. I also had weird withdrawal headaches, but it's possible that's just because I was adjusting to new medication at the same time (you have to level out with epilepsy on medication or it's not safe)."

Aspasia replied: "I take Neurontin for an entirely different reason than you; I take it for nerve pain due to nerve damage/injury from many years of compression. I had back surgery two and a half months ago and I have remaining nerve pain. I was started on a much lower dose than that, and I currently take 400 mg three times a day, and I am about to have my dose increased. This drug never seems to completely stop the burning sensation in my leg. Neurontin is usually started at a low dose, and is increased over time until it is effective in managing symptoms. This drug also has to be decreased gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms. The side effects I notice most are drowsiness, and sometimes I get a little dizzy. When I first started this medication, I noticed that I would have short-term memory issues and would sometimes be disoriented and confused. I could be in the middle of making dinner, and I would forget exactly what I was doing! I also feel depressed and anxious all of the time, but I am currently being evaluated for both anxiety and depression, and I don't think the Neurontin is to blame. I am becoming more tolerant of the side effects, and my doctor has advised me on how to increase the dosage slowly and gradually, and to make sure I could tolerate the side effects. At this point, the side effects are nowhere near as bad as the nerve pain in my leg. Neurontin is an anticonvulsant; this drug is used to treat seizures and mood disorders, and it is often prescribed to treat nerve pain. Ordinary painkillers do not work for this type of pain."

Is Enbrel or Humira a Narcotic? Currently I take Neurontin 900mg and Lortab 10mg for Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I am wondering about Enbrel or Humira? Do they discontinue the other meds I am on in place of the Enbrel or add that to what I am already taking? I dont want to be over medicated but I cant wait for the pain to stop. Thanks for any info

essentiallysolo replied: "http://www.rxlist.com/enbrel-drug.htm this website will answer your questions regarding Enbrel and this website will answer your questions regarding Humira"

LeAnn replied: "neither one of those meds are narcotics. Both of those meds are used to help control the pain, but it is not used in the same way as lortab would be used. Both meds are very expensive meds and Insurance may pay some but I will guarantee that you will still be paying ALOT out of pocket. I have many patients on it. I have seen cost range from 50 dollars to 1700 dollars out of pocket cost. They will continue your other meds until they see some kind of improvement with pain, then they will start to decrease the amounts of pain meds you are taking. I have seen patients that never see improvement with these drugs. It all depends on how your body reacts with the drugs. Every patient is different."
