Olanzapine Zyprexa Side Effects Posts in Q&A
Do you think this is a side effect of my medication (zyprexa/olanzapine)? lately i've been feeling really restless and my limbs feel like they've really needed to move. i can't describe it apart from i feel like i need to run around and let out all the energy in my legs and arms. is this a side effect of my medication or is it psychosis or is it just me? do i need to tell someone about it? thanks. x

mintycakeyfroggy replied: "It is a side effect of olanzapine although should go away within a while sometimes the effects can stay for longer. IT is also called Akathisia and describes a restless state where you can't sit still. If you are in the early stages of taking the medication then maybe leave it until your next medication review or a couple of weeks to see if they subside. If it is effecting your life negatively and you feel you can't deal with it then contact your doctor, there are medications to reduce the effects or other anti psychotics with less akathisia side effects."

Is there an alternative to the drug/medicine "Zyprexa Olanzapine"? Is there an holistic or natural way to get the same results. I've been taking this medicine for a couple of weeks and was reading some possible side effects. The two that I have had are increased hunger and tremors.

Elizabeth B replied: "yes i also take this drug and palning to come off it i've a got be a far bit of information on alternatives and when i bring it together i will return to this question and answer"

breeze1on replied: "Zyprexa is a Antipsychotic drug use manly on people that are psychotic to sum it up it helps people from hearing things that aren't there . mellaril is another way to go but may have more side effects"

Middleman replied: "The holistic stuff isn't worth the bottle it's packaged in. If you are ill enough to be prescribed zyprexa, don't endanger yourself by eating some untested hippie herb crap. That being said, there are many new good meds. Zyprexa has a lot of side effects, including problems with lipids and blood sugar. Ask your doctor if you are a good candidate for geodone or abilify. I really hate zyprexa, and I think in the near future it will be unused. Also, work on making your life as routine, and even boring, as possible for a few months-- this really helps. AND AVOID COFFEE, which stimulates problems, and avoid tobacco, which occupies some of the same neuro-receptors, requiring you to take a much higher dose (and risk more side effects). Very best of luck."

lovesherchina replied: "Zyprexa is not only prescribed as an anti-psychotic, Drs also prescribe it for people with severe cases of depression, although Zyprexa has serious side effects, such as weight gain, kidney and possible diabetes consequences on long term use, Zyprexa helps improve your sense of self esteem, you might want to ask your Dr to reduce slowly the dosage, and consider the introduction, of a good vitamin B complex, this is allowed to be used with prescription drugs. Do not use any herbal product with St Johns Wort, in association with anti-psychotics people have had bad results, these two do not mix. StJohns works fine for depression on its own. Do not get off your medication, work with your care practitioner to achieve the health you are seeking. God Bless"

How to stop my doctor from putting me on Olanzapine (Zyprexa) ? I'm bipolar and recently my doctor suggested replacing risperidone with Olanzapine. He warmed me very seriously that this medicine has a strong side effect of putting on weights. I refused and then he said we'll see how the situation goes. I googled on this topic and have a few questions to ask: Is it true that the reason why Olanzapine guts you on weight is not only because of the increased appetite, but unlike some other anti-depressants, also prevents calories from being burnt during exercise? I am also taking other anti-depressants such as zoloft and did get some weight gain at first until the side effect slowly fades away. But I do see many horrifying posts in here about the serious wight gain caused by Zyprexa. Why is this so different from other weight-gaining anti-depressants? I mean I didn’t mind about the little weight gain problem caused by Zoloft because the only problem it brings is the appetite, which is easier to be resolved: I tried to control my appetite, and do high intensity exercise almost everyday...But the only thing is that Zyprexa seems to be a bit different........ How can I convince my doctor from giving me Zyprexa? I have a family history of diabetes, is this a reason to explain why I shouldn't take Zyprexa? Thank you so much!

Mathieu replied: "To be perfectly blunt, if you don't want to take it then don't. I would bet any decent doctor would provide alternatives (and there are some). And with a family history of diabetes (which you should say) it is more risky. But all atypical antipsychotics can cause this. Zyprexa and other atypical antipsychotics really interact with blood sugar. The FDA mandates that the warnings of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and diabetes be listed with the drug. And both of these are major parts of metabolic syndrome. Aside from the metabolic changes, the antagonizing of histamine receptors typically causes sedation. So because the drug can be so sedating it is typically more likely to gain weight. It also has actions like an antidepressant at the 5-HT serotonin receptor, known to cause some weight gain. So an antidepressant primarily causes weight gain via 5-HT. Zyprexa which is not an antidepressant (but it can reduce depression) acts in several other ways. Zyprexa is typically considered to cause more weight gain than any other atypical. Geodon (Ziprasidone) is typically the most weight neutral."

♪Kingdom Teacher♪†♪ replied: "Tell your Dr. your concerns about diabetes and how it runs in your family. And see if you can come up with a better alternative. There are many anti-depressants on the market. And, there side effects aren't as drastic. I am on one it did make me gain a little, but not to much."

Does anybody have any experience with olanzapine (Zyprexa)? What did you take it for? How did it work for you? What were your side effects?

diamondgirl42054 replied: "I took it for Schizophrenia and Bipolar. It took away psychosis by making me a tierd, bored, lazy zombie. I gained almost 100 lbs (I have been off of it for 1 year now and still not lost any weight), need to sleep 12-14 hours a night, it caused avolition (supposed to be a symptom of schiz. but it's not. It's completely a side effect of the meds), my reading speed lowered significantly, my best friend told me that I never had an opinion on anything anymore, I used to be a college student that could take 6 classes at a time and get straight A's. On meds I can only take 3 (if I want A's) because of the need of more sleep, avolition, and low reading speed, and finally recreational drugs like alcohol, ecstasy and the like no longer have any effect on me (wasted a lot of money figuring that out). The thing about the drugs really scares me because it means that the zyprexa is messing with my brain chemistry SO much that I'm immune to getting drunk or high. That's crazy. I don't do a lot of drugs, but I used to drink once in a while and take ecstacy like twice a year. I used to only have to have a couple drinks or a 1/4 of a pill. Now I could drink 10 drinks and feel nothing. I've only tried taking up to 2 pills. When I felt nothing I just gave up on trying. It sucks. Don't take it. I hope a class-action lawsuit gets put in the works. This drug is the absolute worst. Why would my hospital and doctors give it to everyone. Probably cuz they were getting paid to do so. (Drug companies give health care workers/institutions incentives to push their drugs)."

John replied: "I took it twice for mania. First time it was brilliant, it was like someone had cleaned my mental windows. I could think clearly for the first time in ages. It really was quite startlling. I got hungry though, was eating a lot, and put on some weight., But it was worth it, adn I achieved more in my life when I was on it than I had done before or since. Second time I took it it was disappointing. Just made me groggy rather than clear. And it made me eat a lot, though that tailed off after a while. I would recommend trying it, though a lot will depend on your attitude to weight."

Nettylou replied: "I took it for 2 months and all I remember is I gained 30 pounds in that 2 months."

Question regarding 20MG Citalopram & 10MG Olanzapine (Zyprexa)? What I needed to understand is basically why did the mental health doctor prescribe those two tablets? I desire to recognize the effects of the tablets along with the side effects? I’ve taken the medication for almost two weeks but furthermore can’t sight any alteration in my thinking pattern. I take one Citalopram in the morning & before nightfall I swallow one Olanzapine.

C2IT replied: "Citalopram is an antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication. It is helpful to improve your mood and decrease your worrying. Olanzapine is an antipsychotic and mood stabilizer. It is helpful for psychosis (impaired sense of reality) and to prevent mood swings like in Bipolar illness. The two medications are commonly combined for depressed patients who do not respond an antidepressant alone, to Bipolar patients with depression, and in schizoaffective patients with depression."

SZO replied: "Citalopram is an antidepressant drug used to treat symptoms of depression, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. This drug has been proven to be safe as long as it is used in it prescribed dose (20mg to 60mg/ day). Usual side effects include fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased sweating, trembling, headache, dizziness, sleep disturbances, insomnia, cardiac arrhythmia, blood pressure changes, nausea and/or vomiting and diarrhea. Olanzapine is used in depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder. Side effects include tardive dyskinesia (series of involuntary repetitive movements), dry mouth, dizziness, weight gain (seen in 90% of users), insomnia, among others. Hope this helps."

Zyprexa (olanzapine) question(s) Ive been taking olanzapine for around 3 weeks now and ive had no side effects as of now. 1. is it still possible to get any side effects and/or #2. did you get any side effects from taking this medication and please state which side effect you had thanks everyone yeah im Bipolar, and my doctor upped my dose from 5mg to 10mg and ive been taking the 10mg's for about a week now

gotta luv da Li replied: "I know people who have no side effects from it. The big one you do have to watch for is weight gain, and that can happen slowly over time. Limit your sugar and carb intake and it shouldn't be a problem. I personally retained water on it almost immediately, so I didn't stay on it long."

Hopefully Helpful replied: "When I took Zyprexa I gained fifteen pounds. My doctor let me switch to another medication because I told him I didn't want to gain weight. I already felt bad enough about myself. I didn't need to have any more reasons to hate myself. Please be careful with your weight. Good Luck."

dmdoroh replied: "I am bipolar. When I was in the hospital several years ago, they wouldn't release unless I agreed to meds that would help control my mood swings. They let me look up all the different meds that they wanted to prescribe. Practically all of them had some side effects, especially diabetes. The one that seemed to have the least side effects was Zyprexa. You probably felt a change for the better by now. I experienced almost an immediate difference. But that wasn't all. In a few weeks I ballooned up to 360 pounds. I was already obese. However, I developed a ravenous appetite. Most of it was water weight. I was taken off Zyprexa immediately and put on a different med. I eventually was placed on Abilify, which helped, and the doctor added Lamictal. Lamictal has been a wonder drug for me. I no longer have to take Abilify which was slowing my thinking too much. I always talk medication changes over with my psychiatrist and I ask a lot of questions. This has always benefitted me. I recommend this strongly to anyone who takes prescription medications. God bless. P.S.-I am exercising and watching my portions when I eat. I am now down to 295 pounds. I may have to put a few more holes in my belt. :-)"

mydoterraoils replied: "Hi, The problem with prescribed olanzapine or over the counter medicines is not only their lack of effectiveness, but also the detrimental side effects. The combination of Frankincense, Lavender, and Lemon Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils, taken internally, is an effective natural solution to anxiety, bipolar and others. Applying Lavender to the bottoms of your feet before going to bed can ensure a better nights sleep. We have seen amazing results from using essential oils. To learn more go to Email me at : Good Luck, CB CAUTION!!! Even though there are hundreds of essential oils available, even at the health food store, they are not all of the same standard in purity and potency."

What is Risperidone assigned for exactly? And what are the expected side effects? Yesterday, I saw my Doctor and I told him some of my symptoms from the last few weeks and days (insomnia and lack of eating, voices, thought withdrawl, etc). I am being sent to see a psychiatrist in 6-10 weeks, which isn't very long wait. I've been on Zyprexa (Olanzapine) and Celexa (Citalopram) before. Celexa was 20 Mg's and the Zyprexa was 10Mg's. The Risperidone is only 0.5Mg's for now, taken every ten hours, making it 10 Mg's a day, I guess? (6am/6pm type thing) I have long family history of serious mental illness, and I had problems at birth (premature birth due to mothers severely infected placenta, born at 20.5 weeks according to Vancouver Children's Hospital, weighted 1 pound 4 ounces and was on 100% oxygen for 6 months and for a few months until the age of 2 or 3) and my doctor and my mental health worker and mental health nurse, all think I have psychosis. I am not surprised by this at all, in fact am relieved to be getting help if that is the case. However what are the side of effect of Risperidone? (I had a wacky dream about taking it and getting messed up alien eyes lol) And what Risperidone normally given out for? Thank you very much for helping me out, I truly appreciate it. In about a week, my dosage goes up. To how much I don't know.

LizzieBeth replied: "Risperdol is an antipsychotic. If you're hallucinating, that's why you're on it. That link will give you way more info than anyone needs. I was on it before. Wasn't for me. I hope it works for you. Good luck."

Pick A Winner replied: "Risperidone is most commonly used for psychosis and OCD. I take 6mg per day for psychosis and it is the best drug I have ever taken. I didn't have any side effects whatsoever. .5 twice a day is a pretty small dose so if it doesn't work your doctor has a lot of room to increase it. Hope it works for you."

flight_of_the_thestrals627 replied: "Risperidone is used for the treatment of psychotic disorders, for example, schizophrenia. It also is used in combination with lithium or valproate for the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Side effects can be sudden, often jerky, involuntary motions of the head, neck, arms, body, or eyes, dizziness, hyperactivity, tiredness, and nausea. When you first start taking it (the first week or so), it can cause low blood pressure, which can cause hallucinations."

Sony replied: "Resperidone makes you gain weight."

Kryswalker replied: "Risperidone should really help with your auditory hallucinations. It's generally used to treat bipolar disorder/manic-depression, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, and autism. From your symptoms -- especially hearing voices--your docs may have diagnosed some degree of schizophrenia. Some useful information can be found here: I hope you feel better soon!"

werzrosn replied: "i think thet this site is wery helpfull"

Random Bloke replied: "I'd suggest you look at or ask at - there'll be plenty of advice and experience there."

is there a drug that works similarly to symbyax for the treatment of bipolar disorder? symbyax is a combination of fluoxetine (prozac) and olanzapine (zyprexa) that works wonders but has the unfortunate side effect of inducing significant weight gain (that's the zyprexa), a prohibitive factor in those already overweight for whom it represents a serious medical concern in it's own right. does anyone know of a similarly-acting med that is weight neutral? the prozac by itself does not help. thanks!

Simon W replied: "Zyprexa is one of the most weight gaining drugs you can take. You should ask your doctor if you can try a different antipsychotic. You should keep taking the prozac to stop you having a bad depressive episode."
