PCOS and taking Yasmin birth control pills? Im 22 years old, I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). My doctor put me on the birth control pill Yasmin to regulate my periods. It's my first month, and I want to know during your first month what does the pill do to you? I did have unprotected sex during that time, can it get you pregnant, even with PCOS?

lynz.1988 replied: "Yasmin works like any other birth control pill - it makes your body think that it is pregnant. In order to be fully protected (and by fully I mean 98-99%), you must be taking your birth control at the exact same time every day for at least a week. How long have you been on Yasmin for and is this your first time being on any form of birth control? I am about to take my first Yasmin pill in a few hours so I am curious as to how people are dealing with any side effects also. Thus far I've had horrid things go wrong with birth control pills (migraines when I never used to get them, constant period, chronic fatigueness, anger/depression issues, blood clot issues...and a few more - I even have not yet found a pill that will take away cramps and that was my original main reason for taking them in the first place!), so I am hoping that this will work. I wish you all the luck and hope that this prescription will work for you."

yngmama1988 replied: "i am taking that pill n everything is fine.. i dnt hve pcos tho.. the pill is suppose to lighten n shorten ur peroids.. also have less cramps and all that.. hope that helped a lil.."

Jess replied: "PCOS it's self isn't a form of BC, it doesn't mean you won't get pregnant. Sure, women with PCOS have a hard time conceiving and many have to go through countless fertility treatments but it doesn't mean it's impossible to get pregnant. BC is not effective at preventing pregnancy until you finish the last pill of your first pack. During that time you don't have enough of the hormones that prevent pregnancy in your system to stop an egg from being fertilized. Yasmin is great with the additional symptoms of PCOS like facial hair, bloating, and ovarian twinges and aches. i didn't like it. It didn't help regulate periods and left me feeling nauseous. I'm on the patch now, it has 60% more estrogen than regular birth control pills and while on it I've had regular periods. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped prevent cycsts but Yaz and Yasmin never helped with that either. PCOS is a serious condition so please manage it! Take whatever pill they prescribe you- BCP, Metformin, Provera, etc. While it may not have a cure it IS treatable. Good luck."

I just switched from Junel FE to Metformin and Yasmin for my PCOS? Is anyone else on this? It has got to be better than what I was on. I did research it though, and the risks of taking it seem pretty scary, but I am guessing they are just like any other risk of taking any other medication. Someone tell me some good news.

jaimeworth_2007 replied: "I have been taking Yasmin for many years and have been doing just fine. Every type of medication has some sort of risk but you should be fine."

sweetc replied: "i have been taking yasmin for years now and i have had no side effects, mind u that i'm very weak to medicine i had to switch from metformin to Cinnamed which is made by Vitagenis ( natural medicine for pcos patients). Metformin was okay for me but the high dosage was making me sick as far as feeling nauseated. My friend takes yasmin and metformin and has no symptoms, everyone is different. be sure u exercise and stay away from bad carbs and heavy starch's eat good carbs such as whole grains etc. in moderation. Both eating healthy and exercise plus taking ur MEDS is wonderful for pcos."

trevnme replied: "I'm not familiar with Junel FE (is this just an iron supplement)? Anyway...as for PCOS and the other meds: Metformin is the way to go. I would stop taking the Yasmin. BCP tend to mask the symptoms of PCOS without really treating anything. You wont know if you are on a high enough dose of metformin while also being on Yasmin. The risks involved with any BCP (birth control pill) are raised because we have PCOS...for example: heart issues, blood clots, etc. Be very careful. Many doctors prescribe BCP as PCOS treatment...however..many of the best doctors realize that it does not help. Here's some basic PCOS info and links: PCOS is not curable, but is treatable and most women are able to get pregnant when the PCOS is treated correctly. I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are generally more knowledgeable about PCOS and the correct treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of the proper treatment. The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know: 1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR. 2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day. 3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated. 4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered. When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight. There are TONS of books about PCOS and dieting. There are two that I recommend. Here's the links at amazon for those:...... I also recommend a couple web sites:... ... This one is a great message board where you can ask all your PCOS questions or just chat with the women who are also dealing with PCOS. Good luck."

kokopoko2000 replied: "I was only put on metformin for pcos. It does sound scary, but those are rare side effects. Plus, the risks of not getting pcos under control is scarier."

I have PCOS and my doctor prescribed Yasmin? how long will it take for the excess facial and body hair to go away?do i have to remove it or will it fall off?and when will the acne disappear?

Yasmin, Ocella, and PCOS? Ok, so I have been looking up on the internet about the differences in Ocella and Yasmin since my pharmacy switched my BC and I have been trying to find out if anyone with PCOS has had any effects with Ocella. I have noticed that many women are complaining of weight gain, abdominal pain, back pain, PMS constantly, and extreme mood swings. I am just really trying to get some insight on other women with PCOS and if they know anything about how this might affect it. If I cannot get my answers here, I am just going to have to go to my Dr. But any women with any symptoms from Ocella feel free to respond!

happygirl23 replied: "have you tried yaz? that's what I'm on & haven't had any new problems that i didn't have before (been on it for about a year and half). **And if you have PCOS try to get on metformin, I wasted 2 years trying to find that "perfect" bc pill and finally this summer a doctor (my third one) put me on metformin. In 2 months I've lost 20 pounds, I dont get bloated before my period anymore, and have almost no acne. I know this wasn't really the answer you were looking for but I wish someone told me about this earlier. Dont just let a doctor put you on bc and send you on your way!!"

i'm on yasmin contraceptive pill but....? (PCOS)? I have PCOS, i have been put on the yasmin contraceptive pill i am ttc so why am i on the pill?? xx 3 months ! but i really want to conceive :(!

snowflake719 replied: "Your doctor put you on the pill to regulate your hormones and cycles. My doctor put me on the pill (yaz) for 3 months and it got my cycle on track. It also lowers your testosterone levels which is associated with PCOS. I now see a fertility doctor to help me conceive. I'm in my TWW after fertility medication and IUI's. This is my second month seeing the fertility doctor. How long did your doctor put you on the pill?"

I have PCOS, and I want to take a better BC Pill. I am stuck between Yaz and Yasmin? Anyone tried both? Did it regulate your period more and make it lighter or does it leave you spotting all month? I am trying to compare and contrast.

PPNurse replied: "Just because these worked for one person doesn't mean they will work for you and vice versa...you really just need to try one and see how your body reponds. It is a very individual response. The main differences between Yaz and Yasmin is that Yaz i lower hormones that Yasmin and have only 4 inactive or hormone free pills vs 7 in the Yasmin. This makes your period shorter. For PCOS I would probably recommend you try Yaz...it is pretty expensive though."

Pcos and trying to conceive please help! yasmin pill?!? hey, so i have pcos, but me and my partner are ttc which we have been for 4 months now =S I am on folic acid, the doctor wants to put me on a contraceptive pill called yasmin to get my hormones back to normal, what shall i do? tell the doctor i don't want to because i want to conceive, or take it to balance my hormones then conceive quicker? can someone please help! oh im also diabetic

dane d replied: "Hi there. First of all, your docter is an idiot! The pill only helps while taking it, your hormones will go back to what it was as soon as you stop. You should go on a balanced diet, exercise and go on metformin. Even if you dont have weight or sugar problems! I did this, and I conceived within a month! Good luck, baby dust, and get a different doc. Mwa"

Arabella replied: "Sorry to go out of topic but hmm... well, few weeks back when I was having my hair done at the saloon, I was reading the babyTalk (from the U.S) magazine. They wrote a review and recommended this website to TTC (trying to conceive) ladies. They will teach you on eliminating fertility issues even if you're: late 30s or 40's have endometriosis have tubal obstruction have ovarian cysts or "lazy ovaries" without resorting to IVF or IUI procedures or drugs like clomid, fertilid, preseed Here's the link that you're interested:"

blossom replied: "Taking contraceptive is good, but going and getting checked up from a fertility specialist is better because the check both of you and would help you both to conceive, I have PCOS as well thy gave me clomid and didn't work fore me but fore my sister she can not conceive with out clomid so every women's body is different. Dont wast any time, that's what i did tryed fore a year and then went to specialist and still trying over 4years the quicker i go the better for you. I truly wish you all the best."

wvufan26554 replied: "I also have PCOS. I took Yasmin for birth control purposes for over a year before TTC. It did nothing for me as far as TTC. I would recommend seeing a fertility specialist depending on your age, who will probably put you on metformin as well as possibly clomid. They also will be well versed on treating you with diabetes. Because PCOS affects the way you ovulate, you may have to have further testing. I had an HSG which checks to make sure my fallopian tubes were open. They also tested my husband's sperm to make sure there were no probs there. I ended up having a successful Intrauterine Insemination to have our first son. We needed no medical intervention to conceive the second. Good Luck to you!"

Lydia replied: "You need to see a different gynecologist. It may be totally appropriate for you to go on metformin - depending upon if you are already on medication for your diabetes, or what you are using."

snowflake719 replied: "Hello. I too have PCOS and my OBGYN doctor put me on Yaz for 3 months to regulate my cycle. I thought he was crazy because I too am TTC. He said that the BC pill would lower my testosterone levels and make my cycles normal. After taking the BC pills, my cycles are every 30-32 days. He referred me to a RE because I am in a same sex relationship and I needed to have an IUI done. I am now at my RE and I am on fertility medicines. I just had my blood work done yesterday with one IUI and another one tomorrow. Listen to your doctor. They know what's best for you. It may seem like something you don't want but it will help you in the long run."

Yasmin or Dianette for PCOS? Ive been on dianette for 4 years. Been asked to go on Yasmin. Does anyone know the pros and cons of this? Plus I have been really moody, paranoid and unmotivated recently, is this to do with dianette? Also will it be easier to lose weight on Yasmin? What about water retention etc?

Katie replied: "Heyy... well I was diagnosed with pcos when i was 16... im 22 now and have been on yasmin for a lil over a year now.. the pros of it is that it contains spirolactone in it, a very small amount but it still adds up after taking it for a while.. Spirnolactone acts as a testosterone blocker, which aides in slowing down the excess hair growth ( if you have any) the only con that ive encountered is pill taking.. Im absolutly horrible at it, I was on the birth control patch before and i think it spoiled me a bit lol... so i have to make an effort to take the pill everyday .. hope this helps hun : )"

Heron replied: ""Yasmin seems to work quite well for PCOS suffers, but as already described Dian 35 (Dianette, in Europe) is not a good choice." -- "There is no one best oral contraceptive for all women with PCOS, but there are lots of different theories. One concern about the triphasic pills is that the low starting dose may not be enough to inhibit follicle production, and the small follicles produced can contribute to the appearance of polycystic ovaries. The monophasic pills may be more likely to halt follicle production while also reducing androgen levels, but some women do experience more unpleasant side effects on them." -- Yasmin, a monophasic pill, is one of the pills that is less likely to cause you to gain weight. Have you just noticed the mood changes after being on Dianette for four years? If so, there's probably another cause for this. Have you been under more stress than usual lately? If so, that'd be an obvious culprit. You'll want to keep an eye on your insulin levels, since the birth control pill can increase your chances of developing diabetes. All pill formulations have breast swelling and tenderness as a possible side effect. Different pills affect women differently, though. Good luck!"
