Why is 40 mg Methadone being suddenly taken away from those of us who are perscribed it??? I just found out when I went to get my Methadone perscription filled today that the FDA sent out advisorys to all Doctors and Pharmacies prohibiting them from perscribing or selling 40 mg Methadone after Jan.1 2008. Only Detox/Rehab centers or hospitals will have access to this drug. I personally am on 50 mg per day for pain managment & have been for 7 yrs. The nurse at my Dr. office also told me that even though the 5 & 10 mg tablets were not affected, that if any Doctor is caught writing a large perscription of the 5 or 10 mg methadone tablets for a patient, they will be turned in to the DEA. She told me they did this because they've decided that 40 mg Methadone isn't considered to be for pain managment; it is for Opiate detoxification-uh...ok(?. What are others out there in the same situation doing about this? Also, can any Dr. (like my pain mng. Dr for instance) write out a script for Subutex/Bupranorphin or would I have to go to somthing like a 2wk. Detox center? PLEASE HELP!!!

W W D replied: "You can't just switch to buprenorphine. It's a partial-agonist/partial-antagonist, and if you're taking narcotics, the sudden switch will make you crash (withdrawal). It seems there's no way to have both a "war on drugs" and adequate management of chronic pain in our society, and the tension will always be there."

Tash replied: "Did they replace the Rx with something else? they have an obligation to treat you unless you are discharged. I hope they gave you an equivalent medication, kadian or avinza will do just as well. Are they going to give you something else for your pain. Can you add an edit, to let us know what else they are doing for you? Thanks!"

Chas B replied: "Methodone is not a very effective medication for pain management. I was on 75mg. for about 18 months and I just lowered the dose very gradually until I was down to 15mg. I would NEVER take it again I have been in a pain management program for years and it has worked very well for me. I take Oxycontin and hydrocodone for a cervical spine injury and pain is no longer controlling my life"

KMORRIS3202 replied: "That doesnt even seem right, they cant just leave you with nothing,Is this happening everywhere? What state r u in?im just wondering cause I have friends that get those from doctors just wondering if this will affect them"

Methadone for syringoemylia? I have Traumatic Syringoemylia and take 40 mg of methadone for pain, Does this work for anybody else? I have tried alot of drugs and need help . Is there anything else out there ?

J. P. replied: "I have read a few articles on the management of pain for this condition, (which you may have already tried). Hydrocodone/ibuprofen has been effective also."

singforjesus247 replied: "If I were you I would go off methadone.. Methadone killed my brother.. Watch this video.. just out there to save others, Meghan"

Buusa replied: "I use 150mg of methadone daily. I use it for chronic pain management and also for my drug addiction I was a needle user too but since I went on methadone I .haven't had to pick one up. It controls my cravings for opiates and I wouldn't want to be on anything else. I"ve been on it for 2 1/2 years now and it's the best thing I could have done for myself. Hope this helps."

deltaqueen replied: "I love the guy who said that he has recently read an article about your condition, he was so eager to help, but had no clue, huh. I bet you think that you are real funny, but the mature, sincere people on here don't think that you are at all, this stuff ain't no joke."

I need feedback about clonzapem and tramadol withdrawal! I feel SO SICK! I'm on Methadone to help me ween but I've got to do something differently. it's hard to get my Dr. on the phone and I need guidance from someones who has been there or knows alot about "there"! Here's the deal. Today begins day 5 and I feel like I could crawl in a hole and die! I am cold turkey detoxing from 2 yrs of Tramadol (I had gotten up to about 600 mg at the end) and 4 yrs of Clonazepam 1 mg/day. my dr. put me on methadone 40 mg/day to help me ween. I think that the clon. withdrawal is hurting the most. I definitely have flu symptoms, My skin hurts...like a sunburn. especially on my back and rib- cage. My legs are achey and jumpy and Im so sleepy that I can barely force myself to stay awake. I feel like I have the Flu. Can anyone tell me how long this lasts or if maybe a stronger dose of methadone would help? any feed back would be so helpful. Thanks from the bottom of my cold turkey heart!

nikkibicci replied: "I can't help apart from saying well done for taking care of yourself, and I wish you all the best."

kitten replied: "I am on methadone for heroin addiction. You are definitely going through withdrawl. That is a long time to be on clonzapem and to just stop taking it. H e should of weened you with the clonzapem not the meth. You definitely need more methadone. Clonzapem is an anxiety med and methadone is for opiote withdrawl. Clonzapem is a painful withdrawl it usually lasts a little longer than opiote withdrawl. About a week or so. Good luck and call your dr ASAP"

D L replied: "No pain no gain......It's you against that drug now, beat the crap out of it, these drugs have been leading you around by the hand for four years now.........don't turn back now, everybodies had the flu ( Just think of this as having the flu ) but they don't think it's going to be the end of the world.....once this drug veil is lifted from your eyes, you're going to wonder why you let yourself fall into this trap.........as for the stronger dose of methadone, what do you want to prolong this crap, that's like saying...I like to keep the flu for another week or two please.....I really do wish you all the luck......stay the course, you're going to win.....:):)"

phattygirl replied: "First of all your doctor shouldn't of let you quit those two meds cold turkey. Those meds, more so the clonazepam, you should of been weened off of. He should of had you take half to mg each day for a week and then half of the mg every other day the next week and the third week as needed at night. My sister did it this way and she had no withdrawls. The ultram is like any other pain med that could potenally become addictive, and with any addicitve agent you might feel some withdrawls but not the ones that you are feeling. Also you do describe symptoms of the flu and should get checked for that a get a flu shot."

Taking Methadone off the market? My sister takes the 40 mg of Methadone for Pain management but she heard today that they will no longer allow the 40 mg tablets to be given as Pain management (due to DEA rules). Does anyone know if the means that Methadone will no longer be used as Pain management or can she still get it but in a different strength tablets? Who should she contact about this? Her doctor or pharmacist? Thanks!!

Melinda F replied: "She should still be able to get methadone from her doctor, he/she may just simply need to change the tablet strength. but before she gets stressed out take the time to go the manufacturer's website for the pills and see if it is actually being changed. they should have it posted on the site. also she can look at the fda or dea's website to verify the information. her pharmacist can verify that a change has been made but to change the prescription in anyway she needs to speak with her doc"

what can cause a rash formed like a red ring aroud the lower calf? my aunt is 70 she is diabetic she has severe back pain. she has seen countless doctors and has been hospialized. now she is home and seems to be worse. her doc believes she has an infection somewhere. she is now on her third antibiotic given intravenously. she takes 40 mg of methadone each day for pain. today she developed a rash on her calf that forms a ring around her lower calf. it feels warm to touch. pls help.

surferbabi replied: "ring worm?"

krazyladee replied: "It's ring worm."

Ahab replied: "Could be a tick bite or ring worm. Lyme disease causes a ring around the bitten area if gone untreated."

ninya99 replied: "Diabetic means poor circulation and if she has a bad back she is probably not very mobile and if the area is warm to touch it could be a clot (DVT)...get her checked by a doctor soon to at least rule it out."

Myrah replied: "My non-professional opinion would be lyme disease. I'm not a doctor or any sort, but that would be my guess."

kathy K replied: "It sounds like cellulitis which is an infection which a lot of diabetics have a problem with due to the fact that they heal rather slowly. This condition can get worse rather quickly and sometimes can change into a septicemia - a blood infection. Please call her doctor and have her seen ASAP.I am not trying to scare you but it definetly needs to be seen especially in her poor condition.Good Luck"

cole replied: "It's ring worm! Very easy to get rid of! Get some cream for Athletes foot and the drug store and follow the directions. Ring worm is just from bacteria and so is athletes foot so the cream works for both! As far as her pain and stuff, I hope she gets better soon! If I were you I'd have her watch "The Secret" It has fixed my life in a million ways. It will help her! Good Luck!"

Booker replied: "It could be ringworm. It's not really a worm, just a bacteria. I think there is an over-the-counter medication for it, you could ask a pharmacist."

dianne90578 replied: "I don't think it's ringworm...ringworm forms small red "rings" between dime and quarter sizes on a person's skin; they are raised and have a flaky appearance and are very itchy. I'm not sure what your aunt has but it sounds to me like it could be from something she was wearing around her calf--maybe a hospital stocking, or some sort of band? The other thing I'd thought of is shingles, although that usually forms a circle around one's waist/hips area. But if I were you, I'd look up shingles on Web MD or someplace like that, just to see. For good measure, look up ringworm as well, just in case I'm wrong about that. But I unfortunately had ringworm once as a kid, b/c my parents used to have a bunch of cats, and they weren't very well cared for. That's how I got it. It sounds nothing like what your aunt has. Anyway hope she gets better soon...my mother is in a very similar state of health by the way, right down to the diabetes and back pain...maybe we can encourage each other! :) God bless. P.S.--Saw the answer that the nurse gave you about cellulitis; checked it out for myself online; and it sounds just like what your aunt has. PLEASE call her doctor ASAP. Hope things go well."

jimpurvis44 replied: "Don't know what caused it or what it looks like but if it happenes to be ring worm try some good ointment for athletes foot. It'll will work for ring worm and I would not hesitate to use it on any other skin rash that's not bleeding."

Stephanie replied: "I hate to be the one to tell you this but they have basically sent her home because they are tired of dealing with it. I only say this because I have worked with drs and hospitals for a long time. Diabetics are the worst because you can tell them what to do to take care of themselves and they wont do it or they forget. The spot could be ring worms or it could be the beginning of an infection which will ultimately lead to her having an amputation. The level of methadone they are giving her is really not going to make her want to do better for herself. She basically needs to do some light exercise, but she cant because she is tired because she is druged. She needs to keep her blood levels in check, eat properly,... but in the end it all boils down to her body is fighting an infection that the drs have given up on and because of that her blood sugar levels are spiking which is making it worse. Its a cycle that will end one way or another. The rash will more than likely become an infection, she needs silver from the dr to put on the rash. The dr of course knows this but unless you tell him he wont do his job. Drs are so nuts to just give up on diabetics. Sorry about your aunt."

poeticman replied: "dose she havea can get it checked for ringworms i cant sayi know any thing about an infectio but staff is going around if it hurtsit could be that"

expertless replied: "Possibly psoriasis??"

jurdonna replied: "Sounds like ring worm. Does she have a cat? It's contagious."

Is Dilaudid given to cancer patients that have no chance of recovery? My wife was given 4mg of dilaudid every 2 hours and 40 mg of methadone 4 times a day. I read a question that said that they only give dilaudid to cancer patient that have only 6 mos to a yr to live???????????

SUSAN M replied: "Dilaudid is stronger than morphine and is given to patients other than cancer patients. Usually it is given when morphine hasn't helped."

kwhotrods replied: "No. My wife was taking oxycodone, but now there seems to be a shortage so her Doctor has taking her off the oxycodone and put her on dilaudid."

notalonewithcancer replied: "Dilaudid is given for moderate to severe pain discomfort. Many without cancer are on dilaudid pain meds. I was on the highest dose possible due to pain from my lung cancer for nearly 18 months. I am now weaning myself off of them. So no, its not just given to cancer patients that only have a short time left to live."

Have you ever taken methadone for extreme pain? How much did you need to take? I went from the highest dose of Dilaudid to Methadone. It's 40 mg a day, but it seems to work great as long I keep it in my system. I hear some people take 120+mg of Methadone. I have a very high tolerance, but the 40 a day is working well. (For now). I don't take it to get high, just to relieve most the pain. I have heard the withdrawls are even worse than the dilaudid. Is that true?

Mr. X replied: "No, but you're in for one hell of a nightmare."

Zac replied: "Think of it as "crack + smoking", ease off or it will be a rough ride. (all down hill)"

Jenny J replied: "depends how extreme your pain is, how much worse you think your pain will become, if you have a long term condition I would be learning methods of pain management, have heard of chronic patients who over time have no source of relief due to over use of pharmaceutical pain relief"

icewalk17 replied: "Good God that is some strong stuff you are taking there.Usually Methadone is given to help people get off Herion or other high level opiates rather than for pain If you plan on getting off the medication taper it off and dont stop abruptly. Getting off methadone can be very hard and yes worse than or equal to dilaudid depending on dose and the indivdual. Many people who try to get off the drugs experience the worse problems for 1-2 weeks but could go on with additional withdrawal symptoms for a month or so."

Loz replied: "Hi there. My doctor tried changing me from oxycontin to methadone a while back. I was taking between 40 and 80mg a day - it helped my pain a lot, but once it began to build up in my system I had to stop taking it. After about three days on it I developed extremely severe vomiting and narcolepsy. I tried to tough it out because it helped my pain a lot (and is the only thing to date that has made much difference to me), but the side effects got worse and worse. I think I lasted five days on it all up. I transitioned straight back onto my oxycodone so didn't have any problems with withdrawals, but I too have heard that methadone withdrawal can be pretty rough. However I think that chronic pain patients, provided that they are well managed, probably have little to worry about as far as opioid use and withdrawal goes. It would be different if you were abusing the drugs and suddenly lost your supply, but if you, I, or any other pain patient stops taking our meds, it will always be done slowly and carefully under medical supervision. We are likely to experience some withdrawal symptoms, but they are unlikely to be very severe. I hope that helps to answer your question."

I'm getting off methadone..been on it for 2 years. what other strong pain killers are there.NON NARCOTIC?? im almost off methadone 40 more Mg's too go on weening down process from 120 Mg's...am looking for a strong non narcotic pain killer?? 10 points asap

Boston K replied: "do you have pain?"

oops! replied: "You could try ultram? What is wrong with you?"

DeltaQueen replied: "If you have the kind of pain that has to be treated with Methadone, then I'm not sure what you mean by strong. As strong and effective as Methadone? If so, then the answer is no. I cannot think of 1 medication that would relieve chronic pain without at least a slight bit of opiate(etc.) There is a effective pain medication called Ultram or Tramadol, it has just recently been put on the Narcotic list. For years it was considered a non narcotic, but because it does contain some opiate it was discovered and abused by unlikely candidates and therefore the change in status. In all reality, it is addictive because of the opiate, but if taken properly I feel that it is a great pain reliever and I have been on and off of it several times over the years and never had a hard time, when I stopped taking it, I have read where others strongly disagree so of course you will have to find out what is best for you but the fact remains it will not do what Methadone does. Especially if you where taking it for back pain."
