Beta Blockers Weight Loss in Questions
can beta blocker medication hinder weight loss? I take beta blocker medication which slows my heart rate down, I recently joined a gym cause I need to lose weight. From what i understand a person needs to get their hr up to then really start to lose weight. My medication stops my heart from going into the cardio workout, but I can still get to the max. fat burn mode. am i just wasting my time and money? I cant stop the medication. I do feel better more energy, but weight loss has been very slow. I also do strength training. Anyone out there share this problem?

lucee replied: "I take a beta blocker and an ACE inhibitor and I cannot lose weight. My heart rate simply won't go into a cardio workout rate, and I couldn't breathe if it did. All I can do is walk when the weather is suitable and do some strength training and try not to gain more weight. It IS a problem!"

mutantalbino replied: "The exercise IS NOT a waste of time. Beta blockers do slow your system down. Exercise/ Watch diet."

I'm on beta blockers, how do I adjust my target heart rate during cardiovascular exercise? I take 80mg of Inderal a day for basilar artery migraines/bickerstaff syndrome and I was wondering how I can adjust my target heart rate during cardiovascular exercise. (In addition, when I work super hard to reach the regular target heart rate, am I doing my body more harm? How does this affect weight loss?)

dlwhit replied: "Well when I was on beta blockers my doctor told me I would never make a target heart rate because of the medicine so I shouldn't even try."

Gaining weight back after rapid weight loss? Question #1 : Is it safe for a 50 yr old man to lose 40 lbs in 4 months? #2 : Same 50 yr old man did not lose stomach; still looks 6 months pregnant. (Although runs on treadmill 10-15 minutes a day.) #3 : Same man, on beta blockers (for cardiac arrythmia) is drinking 2-3 alcoholic drinks per week. #4 : Main question : Husband has abandoned his diet plan, now eating out a lot, and is gaining some of the weight back. Is this unhealthy?

tuff luv replied: "read tips on healthier eating and exercise on this site"

lordsear420 replied: "answer to Question 1: well, as long as hes on a healthy diet, eating fresh fruits and vegetables... i would say not only is this safe... this is extremely smart. and good for him! :D answer to Q2: extreme exercise isnt always necessary... (although of course it helps) his body is damaged and needs to be healed through diet answer to Q3: oh geez. alcohol? thats so bad for you. my dad has similar problems... what am i supposed to do???? call every liquor store and bar and tell them not to serve him? it really sucks. answer to Q4: yep, my dads doing the same thing. its so unhealthy. hes gonna die soon, i try to share lots of time with him :( by the way my diet is fresh fruits and leafy green veggies ONLY. read more about it here"

Julie B replied: "Absolutely. Everything you describe is unhealthy. Having excess weight around the middle is a strain on the heart. Drinking alcohol (even in moderate amounts) is unhealthy....but it sounds like he is drinking more than in moderation only. Eating out isn't only bad because of the excess calories of "restaurant portions", but because you have no way of knowing how the food was prepared, what oils or trans fats are used, whether the food is organic or full of pesticide residues (etc). And finally, losing alot of weight and then proceeding to rapidly gain it back is a shock to the system. I wouldn't recommend that either. Having said all that, I have to add this: You can't change him, no matter what. If the threat of a heart attack or declining health or the begging of those who love him hasn't made an impact so far, then it never will. It is totally up to him to decide whether he wants a good quality of life, or if he wants to throw his health down the tubes. That sounds harsh, but I KNOW what I'm saying....I had to watch my father abuse his own health for years, and now my husband is doing the same thing to varying degrees. There is one thing I would suggest: Go to and order some of their CD's on healthy living and nutrition. Dr. Ted Broer shares some things which are startling - others are just basic common sense, but listening to those CD's together MAY just convince your husband that he needs to make some permanent changes - not just temporary minor adjustments - to achieve the healthy life he can still have. I have a set called "Eat, Drink And Be Healthy", and this has radically changed my thinking in what constitutes "healthy" or not healthy......it has also changed the way I eat, shop at the grocery store, and ultimately, the way I feel and look. If he won't listen to you, he MIGHT listen to an expert.....but at least see if you can get him to agree to listen to one CD a day with you. (And you know what - these tapes might change how YOU shop and prepare food at home, so at least to some degree your husband would reap the benefits by default.) Good luck!"

weight loss going slowly? I have been working out at the gym now for at least a month. Plus I eat a good diet I am now weight watchers. I do have a problem getting my heart rate up cause Iam on a beta blocker, I go to the gym and sweat at least 30 mintues or longer 4 days a week plus strength training ever other day. Iam over weight but now I seem to be larger than I was before. Could this be the building of muscle? Iam 55 years old plus my job is a physcial labor work. I get so down cause I know Iam trying hard but just cant seem to get anywhere with this weight loss. I know my heart is stronger and feel better but I want to look better too. I nearly had a heart attack 3 years ago.Any suggestions? or anyone out there with a similiar problem. I know muscle weighs more than fat but how long before I see changes in how my clothes fit at this point they seem to be fitting tighter.

crzbuzz replied: "you're gaining muscle. give it time. you've only been working out for a month."

Ringo Sanchez replied: ""Plus I eat a good diet " i think the problem is you're eating"

Melanie T replied: "Whenever you are trying to lose weight, you should concentrate on these three things which all work together in providing a healthier and quicker weight loss goal for yourself. I have found this combination really successful in my weight loss plans. The first thing is exercising and how much you can put forth into it. The more you exercise, the more results you will see. The next thing is dieting and the calorie intake. If you exercise more, technically you could eat more? Always watch what you eat. Now the last step in a good weight loss plan is always a good diet pill that can help you get to the end of the road. I have found Proactol which is a natural herbal diet pill to be the best around. It's an appetite suppressant along with being a fat blocker which stops up to 28% of fat you eat. Read up about it at TheWeightLossPlace .com where I saved money on it. Proactol really works well with exercising which gives you plenty of energy to perform. Along with that your diet will be affected by Proactol due to the appetite suppressant and fat blocker. If you slip up on meals, the fat blocker kicks in. It's really great to stop food cravings. Concentrate on those three things and the combination is deadly for the fat cells in your body. Good luck and I hope this helps."

Can dramatic loss of weight cause arrythmia? Can dramatic loss of weight due to anorexia cause a sinus tachycardia type arrythmia? I lost my appetite due to anxiety and basically just did not eat for about 8 weeks apart from the odd bite of someting here and there. I'm eating normally now. I developed high blood pressure and sinus tachycardia with normal blood levels. It was blamed on stress and anxiety, possibly chronic fatigue as i get a lot of pain and neuro symptoms too. It all started when I had post natal depression. Now I am on beta blockers to try and control my arrythmia and high blood pressure, though they don't always work, could the cause of the heart probs be the not eating or could it just be the constant stress?

Slartibartfast replied: "So what's happened to the tachycardia?"

TIna replied: "Sounds like it's a combination of all you've been through - and you've really been through it, haven't you? Bless you. Sometimes it takes awhile for the medication to completely control the arrythmias. So don't be concerned - unless your doctor expresses concern over it. (I had to go on meds for arrythmias after getting hit by lightning, so I have some experience with the process.)"

kokochin01 replied: "Both could be the cause."

connie l replied: "both definitely are contributing factor to your arrhythmia.while it is hard to just get rid of the stress, try to have a good diet intake and exercise.stick with your antiarrythmia for now and hope for it to work.common to have some adjustments with your medication too till youll get the right dosage and med"

Dr Simon replied: "Depends. If the rapid weight loss is due to malnutrition it is likley your electrolytes will be out of balance and that can cause cardiac complications. Beta blockers are not the best option, calcium channel blockers are more kind to the heart."

Loving_Heart replied: "Anxiety + anorexia, can cause sinus tachycardia, and can be controlled by beta blockers."

Heart symptoms worse even with beta blocker-what is this? I have been on a beta blocker for a year now for tachycardia. Dr didn't investigate the cause other than doing a holter monitor and EKG several times. It was also blamed on my thyroid before they took half of it out due to nodules...none of these things fit the cause for the fast heart rate and nothing improves it (not even weight loss). The symptoms I get are heart pounding (palipitations) tingling in both hands, short of breath, clammy- like a cold sweat, confusion and extreme exhaustion. It seems to be happening more frequently too. These symptoms were not all present when I first started taking the beta blockers 1 year ago. One day last week, I forgot to take the med and this happened so I blamed it on that. The next time it happened exactly the same and I had already taken the beta blocker hours before. I also have an autoimmune disease so I thought it was yet another symptom from that but wanted to ask anyway to see if other's have the same symptoms. I am in the process of changing doctors because I have had it with this one. I am looking for advice from people who have experienced these symptoms and not people telling me to go back to the Dr as I have already done.

Liz A replied: "I would go back to the doctor urgently, you cannot waster time when you have symptoms relating to your heart! Good luck xx"

Neil L replied: "I would say that it's time to discuss these symptoms with your physician asap. Things do change over time."

Soul Shaper replied: "Did you have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart)? I was having problems several years ago with numbness and tingling in arms and hands. Palpitations, shortness of breath with exertion were also experienced. They found that I have a bad aortic valve, which will have to be replaced in the next 7-10 years. Call your doctor and make an appointment. Some types of heart medicines can actually make certain heart conditions worse. Beta blockers aren't recommended for aortic insufficiency (my diagnosis). He needs to run a few more tests."

chubbycat replied: "I would try alternative medicine as part of your treatment. For example COQ10 capsules 2x. I also suggest you do more tests, and get a second opinion preferably a referal."

s z replied: "sounds like you have an a-fib"

laineyette replied: "All of your symptoms sound like adrenal problems, or pituitary not stimulating your adrenals or overstimulating. Have you had an ACTH and cortisol test? Which autoimmune condition do you have? Did you lose weight on your own or mysteriously? Also a symptom of adrenal problems. You should see a good endocrinologist had have them do a blood workup. good luck."

I want to stop takin these Beta Blockers- Propranolol? I've been precrobed them to see if they work for these head pains. I'm only 14 though. But there's too many side effects. n i'm particulary weary about the 'Hair Loss' & he possible 'Weight Gain' I mean, the pains are unbearable, but my peadiatrician, after 9 months has only just realised my head was Shooting pains NOT HEADACHES!?! anyway.. i've been takin these for 3 days now. i want to stop though. I'm sick of feeling tired all the time! I'm not as 'fun' anymore, i'd rather suffer with headpains, than let it effect me emotionally! haha so is it safe if i just stop them all together? It's a low dose of 20 mg, twice a day. =) prescribed*

Can you reduce the cup size of your breasts by dieting.? After being on beta blockers for 5 years and gaining a bunch of weight, I'm at a DD. When I gain weight, I gain weight everywhere; however, I lost the fist 45 lb. and my cup size didn't go down any. I still have another 40 pounds to go, but I'm wondering if the "girls" didn't shrink with the first weight loss will they shrink at all.

JoshInShermanOaks replied: "Yes, eventually they will shrink - at least 1 cup size. If this is the best answer, please rate it the best answer. Thanks!"

Paulie replied: "they could shrink some, but after growing to DD, they probably won't shrink that much. i think they'll probably stay the same size, from what i've heard from other ladies that lost a lot of weight. but i think that's definitely just a benefit, right?"

Alyssa replied: "Yes, but very little."

zbelle60 replied: "To a degree yes, your cup size will reduce. Breast tissue is mostly fat, but the body gets rid of other fat first and the boobs are usually the last to go."

q-rious_chick replied: "Yeah... when you're on a diet or a workout, they're the first thing to go, hun. :)"

mrssabrinab replied: "Breasts are mainly fat (sorry but it is true). You are simply one of the lucky ones who gain weight everywhere but 'the girls' keep their shape & their fat content that little bit longer. They will shrink eventually, so please remember to tone your chest muscles to help counteract any sagging which may result"

krtctrkr replied: "i recently lost 30lb and i've gone from a D to a C cup! so yes they can get smaller! but everyone is different! i just hope mine don't get any smaller as i am still losing weight and i don't want them to disappear!!!!! hope i helped?"

A question about beta blocker medication and its sideeffects ...? Hello. I have just recently had a tilt table test (among echos, ecgs, heart monitors etc) afterquite a long time of dizziness, numbness etc with excercise, and the results were overwhelmingly positive. I understand this means I have a postural hypotension problem. My cardiologist prescribed me a beta blocker medication. I have a few other cardiac problems including aortic stenosis, and mitral valve incompetence which Ive had since birth, and have had a Pulmonary window surgically fixed. I have been reading up on beta blockers, and Im quite worried about the side effects - tiredness, slowed heart rate, loss of sexual desire, weight gain etc. Im 27, and Im quite active (and Exhausted most of the time!!) and dont think I need anything else making me more tired. I know I should have asked the cardiologist when he prescribed them ... but was just wondering other peoples reactions to beta blockers. Would prefer the human perspective to the 'back of the drug label' perspective.

TSK replied: "I was on a beta blocker and didn't experience any of the side effects you mentioned. Everyones body takes things differently though."

Liza S replied: "those are possible side effects. You will problem fell much better with out the sudden drops in BP. The sexual side effects are pretty common though. But once you are aware that might happen you can be proactive and make sure you give your love live a little more attention. Make sure your partner is aware that you may need a little more attention to get you in the mood. Many birth controls has the same efects and lots a women get around thouse."

iahp_mom replied: "I've been on Toprol XL for 8 years now for almost the exact same reasons. No weight gain, no loss of sexual desire, no tiredness - but I do have a slow heart rate, get cold easily, and I do get a bit dizzy if I jump out of bed too quickly at night. Otherwise it is so much better. I feel so much better. I wouldn't worry too much about side effects."

spike replied: "i take my beta blocker in the evening; i find it helps me sleep"
