How long does Diazepam take before it kicks in? I am a terrible fraidy cat when it comes to the dentist but have to have a couple of broken teeth removed tomorrow. The doctor has prescribed me 5mg diazepam tablets and said that I should take one tomorrow before I go, silly me forgot to ask how long before I go. From swallowing, how long before a tablet works and how long will one last, should I be taking 2 or three??? Also how will they affect me- I just want to be a bit 'out of it' to be honest so I dont care whats going on, otherwise I will miss my appointment as I am too anxious. Thanks everyone. Red xxx

indiana_jones_andthelastcrusade replied: "You can start feeling the effects in as little as 20 or 30 minutes on an empty stomach with the drug in full force after about 45 to 60 minutes, or it may take an hour on a full stomach with the drug reaching maximum concentration in approximately two hours (this all varies with your own metabolism, of course)."

javy replied: "Take one, two will knock you out"

Thurston Howell III replied: "I would say, take one an hour before you go in. See if you are still anxious 30 minutes before you go in, maybe take a second one at that time. Some people react quite a bit from diazepam, and 10 milligrams could put them to sleep. But what the heck, you're going to the dentist, right? Just have someone else drive if they make you woozy. There was a time when I could take 80 milligrams of valium and I would still be out and about, having a great time. But thats just me. Dont take more than 10 milligrams if you haven't taken it before. In my experience, they last 3 to 4 hours. Some people may feel groggy all day. Depends on your reaction to it."

beckerdite1964@sbcglobal.net replied: "5 mgs is the smallest dosage. Upon consumption, it will take about 30 minutes to take full effect. It will likely make you feel a wee bit sleepy, but less edgy. Take one as your doctor ordered. If you still feel anxious while sitting in the dentists' chair, take another. Tell your dentist that you are taking this, too. And try not to be afraid. Getting teeth pulled does not hurt as the dentist will completely numb you so you won't feel any pain whatsoever. Good luck!"

LuvtoAnswer replied: "It starts to work right away kicks in after about 20 or 30 mins full effect in an hr it dosent take time to build in ur system. Have a good day"

What are the effects of snorting valium (diazepam)? What's the dosage required to reach some sort of "high" or altered state of consciousness through insufflation? How long would it take to kick in? Are the effects any different from ingesting diazepam orally? Please be as detailed as possible in your response. Please try to answer the question and refrain from commenting on anything that does not relate to answering the question. Those who will try to lecture me on the dangers of doing such things do not help to answer the question; I will report you if you do so.

outpostflags replied: "read the mds"

froggsfriend replied: "If you're looking for a quick response, try letting it dissolve on your tongue. It will work faster that way because it goes right into your bloodstream. Snorting it might even lessen the effect. You need about 10 mgs. If you are stuck on snorting, then start with 10 mgs and work your way up from there. Have a nice trip!"

okeyrama replied: "First take about 18 pills of diazepam then grind them into a fine powder. To do this it is convienent to put the pill on a sheet of aluminium foil and crush them with anything very heavy like the bottom of a beer bottle or an exercise weight set, etc., make sure its a powder NOT little chunks. Next, you can line the powder up as if it was 'coke' and snort it through a straw...but remember the powder, if left out long enough will eventually get humid and not be snortable...also if you have a runny nose or a cold it could clog up your nose...plus you should divide the powder you have into two piles so after snorting one you check if the powder is getting in to your lungs and not just being wasted (sticking to your face) before doing the other pile.....SO AFTER SNORTING ONE PILE CHECK YOUR NOSE BEFORE SNORTING THE OTHER PILE...THIS MUST BE DONE QUICKLY OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT GAIN THE EFFECT. It takes about 15min to feel anything. Inhaling actually works faster than taking it orally*****that is why you get the euphoric effect.********.i.e. take diazapam orally will not give you the effect you are looking for because its tooo slow. When taking this orally the stomach has to first break down the pill then absorb it into the bloodstream....as a powder inhaled or ingested it works faster. Make sure you inhale AT LEAST 18 pills at once otherwise you'll be wasting your time..... DO NOT USE MORE THAN 30 PILLS at once. finally YOU ARE RIGHT...ANYONE WARNING YOU ON THE DANGERS OF DOING SUCH THINGS SHOULD BE REPORTED AND THEY SHOULD NOT LECTURE YOU."

I got some 2mg diazepam tablets off my doctor? to take before my dental appointments because I have to have two root canals. How long before the tablets kick in? How long before my appt do I need to take them? He gave me 28 tablets. How many do I need to take? He said one before and one after if I want, is that enough to relax me? Why a tablet after? Do they make you feel tired?

:) Lucy (: replied: "It usually took 20 minutes for mine to work but i think mine were 5mg (Mine were to relax my muscles, i have ortho problems) i'd say about 20-30 mins. I would take 2 before really, then i know i'd be well out lol A tablet after is to calm you down. They make you really drowsy so make sure someone else is driving you there and back. Good luck, i hate the dentist! Edit: Yes they do, they relex you and make you drowsy. Don't drive yourself. Mine used to make me go to sleep for a few hours."

David S replied: "Diazepam is Valium. It takes about 10 minutes to take effect, and lasts no more than a couple of hours. If you've never taken it before, one 2mg table is plenty. You will feel very relaxed."

Jen M replied: "That really is strong, especially if you aren't used to them. It takes around 20 minutes to kick in, I used to take it for anxiety attacks, but only like 0.5 mgs. Root canals are awful, I had 4. My doctor didn't give me anxiety drugs, he gave me nitrous oxide and a shot of demerol and of course, novovcaine. I just kept screaming for more novocaine all the way through them. The valium will help anxiety, but keep on asking for pain medication. In fact, I would ask the dentist if you take the valium how much pain medication would you be allowed through the procedure. And if you take a 2 mg valium afterwards, you need a friend or taxi to pick you up."

Ute H replied: "to keep you calm and cool. Trust your Doctor he remembers his root canals. Its called Dentist phobia. My little 4 year old granddaughter told me a bout her last Dental appointment. She said grandma i know Hui is the devil, with eyes as big as a tea cup i ask Nadia you met the Devil? she replied yes THE DENTIST IS THE DEVIL. lol dont forget to take your Valium."

A 2 DA J replied: "They make you feel high!!! doctor gave me them when i busted my back, feels nice for me"

How will the effects of 15 MG Diazepam have on me? Hello I am a Ativan dependent person, I don't wanna say addict cause I did take the drug exactly as perscribed. Well now my psychiatrist is switching me over too diazepam (valium) 15 MG 3x a day in place of the ativan. I just took my first 15 MG dose i don't feel anything yet and its been an hour. How long does it take for these too kick in? Why is the MG's 15 when I was only taking 6MG of ativan a day. I'm a little nervous that this psychiatrist doesn't know what im doing 15 MG isn't an overdose is it? Any input would be great thanks!! a little nervous my psychiatrist doesn't know what HE is doing**

anna13 replied: "The ratio of Ativan to Valium is not a simple one for one exchange. In fact, I think it's more like a 1 to 5 ratio. So if you were taking, say, one mg of Ativan, it wouldn't be unusual to replace that with 5 mg of Valium. Some docs think it's more like a 1 to 7 ratio, or even 1 to 10. If you're dependent on Ativan, that means you ARE addicted. Taking it per your doctor's orders doesn't mean you're not addicted. Most people who get addicted are not "thrillseeking" - they're just doing what their doctor told them to do. Unfortunately, some docs are ignorant, and will over-prescribe the medication, leaving patients with an addiction/dependence. Your doc is right to move you onto Valium, but if you're dependent on the Ativan, you shouldn't be doing a full exchange. Rather, you should, for example, replace only part of your Ativan dose with Valium, and gradually change over to all Valium over a period of weeks. Once you're on all Valium, then you should begin a VERY SLOW tapering off of the Valium. 15 mgs is definitely not an overdose, given that you've been taking 6 mgs of Ativan per day. I highly suggest you take a good, long, thorough look at this manual on getting off the benzo drugs:"

keepsondancing replied: "I don't like the sound of this. 15 mg. is a fairly high dose; you should be feeling very relaxed or even lightheaded by now. And 3x/day is a LOT. This drug is habit-forming. I would seek a second opinion...or even a second practitioner."

you betcha! replied: "I'm guessing your are taking this med by mouth, 15 mg is about enough. If it is for anti anxiety, the recomended therapeutic doses are 2-10 mg 2-4 times daily. If it is for skeletal muscle relaxation it's 2-10 mg 3-4times daily. It usually takes 30-60 mins for it to work. It peaks in about 1-2 hours and the effects of the medication last about 24 hours. Ativan is a little more powerful than diazepam. 15mg is slightly more than recommended, however, since you only take it 3 times a day you will be fine and no it's not an over dose. Good luck!"

abbeycoolit replied: "Ativan (lorazepam) is a drug used to treat anxiety and insomnia and belong to the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines.Valium(diazepam) belongs in the same group of drugs as Ativan. It is also used to treat anxiety, relive tension, and relax muscles and calm patients who might be very tense. So you see your doctor is just changing one drug in the same class for another. It would seem that your doctor made the switch for sound medical reasons such as 1)you were no longer getting relief from ativan at the same dose or long usage 2) you had developed tolerance to ativan which made it ineffective to treat your condition(you did describe your self as aivan dependent) 3)you now have a medical condition that negates treatment with ativan 4) your insurance will no longer pay for ativan. When a doctor prescribes a drug , a pharmacist in filling that drug may discuss the dosage with your doctor if he feels there is an issue with that particular dosage. So if you follow the directions faithfully, the chances of an overdose is rare. If you still have any more concerns , feel free to take them up with your doctor who would be glad to answer any and all questions that you have. If he or she is offended by your questions and would not answer them to your satisfaction, then do not hesitate to look for a new one. I wish you well in your treatments and pray for your recovery."

Has anybody taken Buspirone? Did it work for you? I've been reading up on it and I know that the effects can take a while to kick in, how long did it take with you? The side effects sound scary too although I know they are remote possibilities, did anyone experince short or long term side effects? Please help as I am determined not to take diazepam.

PrairieDog replied: "yes it works takes about 7 to 10 days to kick in i had minor heart arrhythmia at first but that is gone now it keeps the anxiety away and doesn't have any weird side effects"

Question Queen New Attitude!™ replied: "It's been almost 7 yrs. since I last remember taking it. I really didn't notice any side effects. I guess it helped a little."

diazepam and withdrawl help? hi i started taking diazapam more than 8 years ago and i can still remember how good i felt when first started taking them and also remember the nightmare i felt when couldnt get any, it was worse than hell, i had many times when i never had them but sinse 2003 i have never been without any, in 2003 i was taking (in secret) 20-40mg 3 times a day, i felt brilliant, i could go out, could have a laugh basicly just what you'd think is a normal persons daily life, it was jan 2007 that i finally knew that they werent doing anything good anymore and no matter how much id taken they wouldnt work, i couldnt go out, could no longer work, couldnt speak to anyone other than my partner at the time and that was going nowhere due to my addiction, i was fortunate to have a beutifull baby daughter in march 07 and that kicked me into trying to stop the diazepam, i started taking 10mg 3 times a day, morning, afternoon & night where as before it was any time any amount, after a while i reduced it to 10mg twice a day, 1st thing in morning then in afternoon, it has been a very unpleasent time but managed to cut them down to just half a 5mg tablet in morning & the other half in afternoon, through all this i split with partner and still couldnt enjoy anything other than my daughter as we didnt have to talk just play and enjoy each others times together, she is now 1 1/2 years old and i'm not any happier with myself or able to work or play, i have started to take a little bit extra if i have appointments or any time i have to go to a social event, only 2 people have known about my problem and cant belive how well i've hidden it although it is so obvious i couldnt even smile at daughters 1st birthday or 1st christmas as others were about, how can i stop taking the very small amount i'm taking now? i have tried but i lose my mind every time, i'm determined to do it but just cant see how, any help, suggestions, tips, links, anything at all i'd be really greatfull for regards steve

aka Delaney's mommy replied: "Maybe you could have your doctor give you some prozac to try and help. prozac is non-addictive."

Cornish Granny replied: "Hi Steve, the previous answer is stupid, no point in taking one pill to get over another. You need to see a Doctor, there are lots of ways to help you with withdrawal symptons. Take that first step. I think there are websites to help people like youself. Good Luck x"

vambo the fourth replied: "If you read it properly, he was taking 120 mg a day sometimes. I had a short-term addiction to diazepam, I was taking 120-150 mg a day for about 8 months. I didn't know where I was. I cut it down gradually, until I got to zero, then stopped. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, I thought I was going to die. You need professional help with a long-term addiction like that, but it's still you that has to go through it, whoever helps you. You have my sympathy, and I wish you every success. Valium is a filthy, vicious little drug. Ah, I see the "nurse" has deleted her answer."

tatertard replied: "To discontinue use correctly, you should taper your use. Less and less each week. I highly recommend being monitored by a doctor, as there is a risk of seizure in addition to withdrawal symptoms."

JULIE E replied: "jeeezzzzz steve you poor fu2ker, ive been an addict for 5 yrs now and its driving me potty. i don't really know what to say but... my mum was addicted to df118s.. dehydrocodine for years so i had to make her cluck with reduced doses, it took about 4 weeks but it worked, you should reduce if you can[easier said then done] if not why don't you try a spliff. it might or might not work, it helped with my mum. also DONT let your addiction get you down, roll with it, otherwise you will lose yourself in self pity and that's the last thing that you need. my advice would be REDUCE your intake by cutting the afternoon one out and see how ya go, don't go to fast as you will cluck, good luck and god bless steve. julie.x ps... go to the docs and get some antidepressants they work bloody wonders and you dont get any withdrawals when you dont need them anymore and stop."

curious replied: "Hey i have been taking medicaions for yrs!! If u have gone down to the lowest dose..maybe...u NEED the medication!!! If u really want to totally stop all of it..Go to a doctor..they r the 1s that know how to slowly wean urself off them..AGAIN..u mite need them!!! MARY"

Valium 10mg ...........? I was just perscribed diazepam 10mg. I just took one, how long will it take to kick in, and how will i feel? Which would be better for relaxation. Xanax or my valium. Im always stressed and looking to just be relaxed Wish my doctor would prescribe medical marijuana. thats the relaxation im looking for.

happylondonerder replied: "It will start to kick in after about 30 minutes (depending upon your anxiety level and anticipation), it will relax you, make you feel a bit spaced out and will relax your muscles (yes - all of them)."
