How strong is the antibiotic augmentin in terms of antibiotics? And what does it mean if I took for an infection for my toe and it seemed to clear up and was healing and no longer painful, but after a week and half/ 2 weeks the infection came back just as painful as it was before?
AG replied: "It's an oldie but a goodie.
It sounds like your course of treatment wasn't long enough. More than likely, when you return to your doctor, he will put you on the same medication for a longer period of time, or switch to a stronger anti-biotic.
But either way, you need to go back to the Dr. and get back on something right away. Often when infections return, they are stronger and can come back with a vengeance."
which is the stronger antibiotic:augmentin or zinnat? perscribed for cystic acne...

Can antibiotics give you nasal congestion? I went to the doctor a month ago for a cold. He gave me a new strong antibiotic called OMNICEF. I worked right away! My cold was completely gone within seven days. I took them for ten days. Four days after I went off the OMNICEF antibiotics my cold seemed to come back in the form of nasal congestion. But I had already been doing a different antibiotic for 4 days DOXYCYCLINE. Lyme disease was suspected and I was waitng for the test results. The doc gave me them because they are used to treat Lyme disease. The test came back negative. I went back to the doctor because the second antibiotics he gave didn't help my nasal congestion. He then gave me another strong antibiotic called AUGMENTIN. I did AUGMENTIN for another ten days. My nasal congestion did not get any worse but AUGMENTIN did not seem to help my nasal congestion either. I have not done any antibiotics in 2 days. My congestion was completely gone last night and today. It appears that the antibiotics caused the nasal congestion?
I was diagnosed with lung cancer 18 months ago. Had chemo and radiation treatment little over a year ago. This is part of the reason I could get the antibiotics to begin with. Oncologist doctor said last CT 2 weeks ago showed no cancer.
Mark S replied: "Never heard of the phenomena- abx "causing" nasal congest.
Likely a coindidence.
Augmentin not called for unless bacterial cause of nasal issues suspected. Virus most likely. Be glad your nose cleared up.
Be ESP glad you've been CT'ed & pronounced cancer-free!
Eat healthy, exercise (long walk/ jog) & get yer sleep.
(LYME suspected, huh? {scratches-his-head} )"
I have a nose that is perpetually congested. What is causing this? It started about a year ago when one of my nostrils would stuff up at night. It wasn't that much of a bother because I would sleep on the side anyway and that other nostril would get better through the night. About 6 months ago it started becoming unbearable. I would lose sleep at least 2 nights a week. Now, the inside of my nose would swell up so bad that I can see no holes when I look up my nostril. My doctor said it was an infection and gave me Augmentin ( Strong Antibiotic) and oral steroids. They didn't help at all! I went to and ENT doctor and he said it was allergies and set me up with an allergy panel. Does this sound right? Would allergies steadily get worse? and follow you everywhere you go? Also, wouldn't I have other symptoms? Has anyone else had similar symptoms. Trust me this is bad. I haven't slept a whole night through in at least 4 months. I am so frustrated. Please offer some advice. Thanks in advance
! Kimmi replied: "I have the same problem, but not as bad as you. They thought it was allergies, but for me it wasn't. So I'm going to the ENT later to see what's going on. But the doctor said for most people with this problem, it's usually allergies, so an allergy test would probably help you"
Kevin S replied: "Not to sound odd but have you lost a tooth recently I have and suffer simuliar problem . Also many years ago when I was 13 I hit my nose on the bottom of our swimming pool I though I broke it . Now 38 years later I when to my ear, nose and throat dr and he told me after looking at me that there was a hair line blockage up in the right nostril which now could be fixed with in 2 hours with little pain and health insurance would cover this it was older procidure now more advanced ,you may want to consult a ear, noise and throat dr believe me there some very good ones just in that feild"
Winter Flue and then Sore Throat? Hello guys, I came to Australia 4 years ago and I never in my life was sick like this before.
One and half months ago I had a high fever at night and my whole body was feeling weak. 10 days I couldn’t even go to work and went to see few doctors. Doctors (GPs) didn’t really do proper testing, and initially they thought it’s a kidney infection and prescribe me Cephalosporin.
Antibiotics didn’t really help because it wasn’t a kidney infection. After few days went to see a doctor again at the medical centre (Different GP) she said that I should have done a full blood test and urine test before getting any antibiotics. So I did a full blood and urine test.
Full blood test pointed that I am infected with a viral infection. Something like winter flu. After 7-10 days I return to work. But I was still feeling weak.
After another 2-3 days I start coughing at night (3-4 AM at night). Went to see a doctor again and he said now it’s the second stage of the infection and it’s now bacterial so he asked me to take Amoxicillin. After the 1st course I was still having a cough. After a week or so doctors prescribed me Amoxiline with something else and I started feeling lil better.
After few days I was having cricket training and had some very cold water soon after some running session. I start getting a sore throat. I went to doctors again, did a blood test for Mono (kissing disease) and results were negative. Prescribed me a stronger antibiotic Augmentin with Amoxicillin(875mg) and potassium clavulanate (125mg) 10 tablets. I was feeling better after taking few tablets. But when the course finishes I am having the sore throat again. On the same day that doctors prescribed me the 3rd antibiotic set, I had a very bad infection on my right eye. I don’t think this is related to my other infection, that’s what doctors said.
I cant take anti biotics any more. It’s going to harm my health. Can someone help me to understand what is going on with my body this winter? Should I see a specialist?
Even though I was feeling tired and sick I was still attending Cricket Training and hard cardio sessions. I don’t know whether this has a bad effect on me. Also in my childhood I used to get tonsils very often. But this sore throat is not around my tonsils. It’s more towards my center throat and pain full when swallow anything.
Thanks a million!

Headache with ear infection? I went to the doctor yesterday and was told I have a bad ear infection. I had one last month, too, so I was put on a stronger antibiotic (augmentin). For the past week, I've been having really bad headaches that don't respond to Advil and I'm feeling "out of it". Does it sound like these headaches are related to my ear infection? I've been on antibiotics for 24 hours now, but still feel terrible. BTW, I am a healthy 27 year old woman.
It feels like my head is in a vice and my eyes are going to pop out.
I don't feel stuffy or congested
ͼͽ~Safireyez~ͼͽ replied: "it is always normal for headaches to occur becuase of the built up sinus pressure. Once you can get the congestion down or the pressure to relieve in your ears you will feel better. I always do nose drops and hang my head upside down to let the drops go into my ears. That usually helps. Once they find the right antibiotic for you then you should be okay. I usually get nauseated and dizzy when I get ear infections from my equilibrium being off. It will also give you the out of it feeling. Hang in there and just try to eat healthy, drink lots of teas and water and oj to give your body the boost it needs to heal. Good Luck and feel better soon! Get some rest!"
bpsgirl123 replied: "Yeah, the headaches are most likely due to the infections and your equilibrium is off due to the extra fluid in your ears, so you'd probably feel dizzy or out of it. Try this. Take a mixture of 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 vinegar (just regular apple cider vinegar will do). Put several drops into your ear, don't be afraid to use it, and let sit for a minute, drain. Do the same to the other ear. The alcohol will help clear the infection and reduce the fluid and the vinegar acts as a natural skin softener so you don't get dermatitis behind the ear drum. We used this mixture when I was a kid on the swim team (many years ago!) to prevent ear infections, or any time we thought one was coming on. I still use it today! It really works and may help you with your problem. It won't hurt you if you want to try it. Good Luck!"
Saucy replied: "Yep, it's absolutely to do with your ear infection. There are a lot of nerves that innervate the ear... and you are VERY close to the brain. So if one of those nerves gets inflamed, it's going right into the brain. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in a little more over the next day and you'll start feeling better.
One side effect of a bad ear infection can be meningitis or Gradiengo syndrome... neither of which you want, obviously. If it continues or gets worse, you need to go back to your physician and have a CT done."
Can antibiotics cause leg pain? I had an abcsess tooth pulled Monday and as a result it messed up my sinuses, so I went to the ER on Tuesday night and was given a stronger antibiotic called augmentin which is 875mg twice a day along with percocet. I am experiencing some leg pain in the back of my calf, not so much pain.. it sort of feels like I ran too much or something, a bit sore. Is this normal from antibiotics? Or is it from maybe sleeping so much and lack of energy from getting tooth pulled? I have only taken 2 doses of the antibiotic, I am not sure if maybe I should stop it and call a doctor tomorrow or what.. any ideas?
BrownCracker replied: "antibiotics like any drug can have side effects. Everyones body reacts differently. I was given large doses of antibiotics a couple months ago and it caused temporary kidney damage. I would advise calling your doctor and expressing your concern."
My 18 month old has a never ending runny nose!? My LO has had a runny nose for a month now. It started clear and has progressed to green/yellow. He just finished a 10 day round of Amoxicillan for an "Ear infection" Although the Dr swore up and down he didn't have a sinus infection (Whatever)
I am taking him back to the Dr tomorrow because he is still pouring buckets of snot, coughing, his breath stinks and he is running a low grade fever.
To the point of my question I was thinking I should ask for a mucus culture, chest x-ray, shot of rocefin and Augmentin and possibly a blood test to check specifically for what he has...
Am I missing anything? Too much? Too little? I am so sick and tired of him being sick.
I am just so tired today and not sure I am at full thinking capacity. I needed a few other opinions to make sure I am covering all bases so I can go in tomorrow fully prepared.
...or is there a better stronger antibiotic he could use? Augmentin was the next one I could think of at the moment...
OMG! I didn't even think of that!!!!!!!!!! My niece did that once and OMG it stunk so bad!!!! I am going to run that by the Dr tomorrow! AWESOME answer!
Skittles are M & M wannabees replied: "I know this may seem ridiculous to even consider, but my niece one time stuck a piece of foam (like from a couch cushion) up her nose. That's the first thing I thought of when you said "his breath stinks". Same thing with her...oh she stunk! Could not figure out WHAT was going on 'til they took her to the doc and she pulled this little piece of NASTY, SMELLY piece of foam out of her nose. Who knows how long it was in there. Is it possible he could have shoved something up there? That could be what's causing the infection, runny nose, smell, low grade fever, ETC.
Just trying to through out every possibility."
Do I have a case here...... My pharmacist wrote my prescription? wrong and I overdosed on Augmentin XR, which is a very, very strong antibiotic. The pharmacist wrote for me to take 2 tablets twice daily.... and I did. Let's just say.... I had some horrible side effects (not life threatening, but really bad). Do I have a good case in court? Thanks. Any info would be helpful.
sirdumbalot8 replied: "maybe... if the pharmacist does not have a license to practice medicine, then you have a case.
i'm not sure though... ask a lawyer"
crazyguyintx replied: "I don't know enough details to advise you, but you should contact an attorney and explain what happened. You might possibly have a very good case, and your pharmacist could be facing criminal charges as well."
ciara l replied: "ask a lawyer. how d he*l r people on yahoo answers supossed to know that?"
Dew replied: "I would say yes you sure do have a good case,Life threatening or not they should know what medication they was handing to you and they are supposed to go over the medication before you leave the pharmacy."
ctf082 replied: "i no everything."
gazeygoo replied: "It is not technically possible to "overdose" on an antibiotic. The human body will use the amount it needs and throw off any excess. This is why they tell you to take only the prescribed amount on time since excess is wasted. I would more likely suspect that you simply had a negative reaction to the antibiotic that would have happened at any dose. Meantime you can contact an attorney if you like but isn't that exactly what is wrong with this country?? Everyone is sue happen. Good grief, life isn't perfect."
