Metformin....period heavier than usual...good sign? I started Metformin at the end of March. My periods were long (34-41 days) and I usually ovulate very late into my cycle as I have PCOS. The doc put me on Met. to hopefully shorten/ regulate my cycles. Usually my periods are very light and I experience no cramping or discomfort since going off the birth control (they are unusually easy). I started the Met. towards the beginning of my cycle and it definitely did not shorten this past cycle. I started yesterday my first period while on Met. My period is much heavier (more what I consider to be normal) and I am having period cramps, tiredness, all what I remember I used to get with a period, pre PCOS. My question is this....do you think this is a good sign that the Met. is working? Does it sound like it might be a more regular cycle? (Obviously these would be guesses based on your personal experience I know). I am just keeping my fingers crossed as I am ovulating so late (this past month day 31!!!)

jilldaniel_wv replied: "It def. sounds like a good sign to me--it probably means your ovulation is "stronger" and therefore the follicle produces more progesterone which thickens the lining of the uterus more, and then when your period came it was heavier/longer. Hopefully this month you will O sooner! Good luck and baby dust!!"

lisaloxx replied: "I agree with the other poster. That is a good sign. Sounds like your body reacts well to metformin. It's possible even with PCOS that the metformin will correct the problem and help you get pregnant. It did for me. Good luck"

Heavy Periods, PCOS, should I get a hysterectomy? Im 24 years old and have been diagnosed with PCOS and Endometrial Hyperplaysia for the past 6 years. I have had 2 D&Cs in the past year, and been on 10 forms of birth control as well as Metformin. I still have had severe issues with my period where it will not come for 8-10 months, and when it does come it is horrible clotting, heavy, with such severe cramps that I cannot get out of bed. I feel like I have exhausted all of my options, and am now considering a ablation or full hysterectomy. Has anyone gone through anything similar and have any advice before I make my decision? I have wanted children for a very long time, and am not sure I am ready to give up the fight for them yet. Thanks

rockangel replied: "idk"

recticor.com replied: "It is not time for hysterectomy. You have only one terrible day in a year - when periods come. I believe you can endure this single day. You have to heal general metabolic disbalance of your body, but not the derangements which relate to uterus. Why was you prescribed Metformin, do you have diabetes?"

Heather1222 replied: "I have a little bit different situation than you do, but I still know how you feel about considering a hysterectomy. I'm 23 years old and have no kids, but I have also considered a hysterectomy. For almost a year and a half, I have been bleeding heavily (as heavy as a period) almost constantly and had very severe pelvic pain. I have been on 5 different birth control pills and currently the depo shot in a little over a year. Nothing has helped me and everything just keeps getting worse. I have been to 2 different doctors about this. My first doctor did a laparoscopy, said she found nothing, and told me to "hang in there". Needless to say, I started to see a different doctor. My new doc has done so many tests and procedures that I have lost count. I'm scheduled to have another laparoscopy on the 15th. I have also been thinking a lot about having a hysterectomy in the last couple of months. I feel like I have run out of options and things just keep getting worse. I also have always wanted to have kids, but at this point it doesn't look very likely for me. In my situation, even if I didn't have a hysterectomy, I still most likely would not be able to have kids because of all the problems I'm having. I just wanted to let you know that there is someone out there who knows a little bit how you are feeling. I hope things get better for you and good luck making your decision!!"

Does taking metformin and clomid together help to TTC? hi there gals, have any of you taken met and clomid at the same time.Metformin gives me a good flow and heavy period which i think is good after not having proper periods last time round. But now my periods occur within 2 weeks or 3 weeks. This month I am going to take met and clomid.I am worried what if I get preggo and the metformin causes miscarriage? Am I over imagining?

The Real Shaz 3 replied: "ask your doctor"

meikomydear replied: "Metformin is a diabetic drug that is used to start you ovulating. Clomid is the same thing. Metformin is safe to take while pregnant. I was prescribed this drug by my RE but it didn't work for me. Hope it works for you. Good Luck."

BrandyLou replied: "Metformin is often prescribed for PCOS/Insulin Resistance. Sometimes it does help with ovulation but, it doesnt work for everybody. However, sometimes the combination of Metformin/Clomid does help to ovulate. Metformin will not cause a miscarriage and if you do become pregnant your Dr. will want you to continue taking it atleast for awhile as a sudden change in blood sugars can cause fetal distress and possible miscarriage."

Ade replied: "hi, Keep track of your cycle and do a pregnancy test on the day after your period is due. If you're pregnant, don't take clomid. Metformin use during pregnancy (if medically directed) is alright. "

Anitra replied: "Virtually no added risk of miscarriage. Most Dr.'s actually suggest that you stay on it for the first trimester at it has been proven to help reduce your risk of miscarriage!"

Baby S due July 10th, 2010! replied: "I am 7 weeks pregnant and still taking metformin. I have read online and my Dr has instructed me to continue taking it until the end of my first trimester because it reduces the risk of miscarriage. It will not harm the baby at all! I did get pregnant while taking metformin and 100mg of Clomid CD 3-7 on my 3rd try. IT HAPPENS and it does work! Good luck! Hopefully soon you'll have your miracle too!"

Liberty replied: "I read your question and I understand your frustration, my dear. Believe it or not, my husband and I tried to conceive for more than 2 years. We tried to refrain from sex for days and even weeks but it didn't help. Worst part is, there were empty hopes - I thought I was pregnant but in the end I wasn't. It's really frustrating and I understand that. I was in Yahoo Answers and in this section quite some time ago and I ask a question similar to yours and a person recommended me a book. It's entitled "Getting Pregnant Bible". I swear it's like a gift from God! It teaches stuffs like the seven things you need to do before even you try to get pregnant to ensure a healthy pregnancy; the appropriate diet to conceive; how to increase your husband's sperm count; the ovulation cycle and many others! I am already having my 4th child now! I really recommend that you try reading this book out. Also, they are currently giving free bonus books like fertility secrets and choosing your baby gender! It's for a limited time only! Learn more about it here: Lots of baby dust and good luck =) P.S: I just found out it was featured in The Oprah Winfrey Show recently!"

Is it safe to use metformin in Polycystic ovarian syndrome? Does metformin regularize the heavy bleeding that occurs in PCOS?Does the periods get regular and ovulation takes place with metformin? How many days does it tae for the weight to get reduced and heavy bleeding to stop?Which is the best diet for PCOS?Is it safe to have metformin in pregnancy? Is it possible for women with PCOS to become pregnant without much complications?Does anyone have experience of use of metformin in PCOS?Does it affect the child?

BobcatChick replied: "Yes it is. I have PCOS and have been taking Glucophage XR (Metamorphin is the generic) for years now. I take 2000mg/day. To explain what Glucophage does, I need to help you understand what PCOS is. Women with PCOS are almost always insulin resistant, which means that their bodies try to compensate by “overproducing” insulin. (Insulin resistance can be detected by a blood test of fasting serum levels of glucose and insulin.) High insulin levels produce excess male hormones by increasing androgen production by the ovaries leading to more and more PCOS symptoms. Androgens are male hormones such as testosterone. High insulin levels also increase the production of LH by the pituitary gland. The high LH in turn leads to an even higher level of male hormones. In several recent studies, Glucophage has shown effectiveness in inducing ovulation in some women with PCOS by lowering both LH and male hormone levels. Now, having said that, note that the major symptom of PCOS is high insulin levels. The goal is to decrease them. And what do carbs do? They raise your insulin level. So, the best diet...one actually created for PCOS sufferers is SugarBusters. It's wonderful and helped me, along with Glucophage, to lose about 20-30lbs. If you have PCOS you may or may not have trouble getting pregnant. I have two kids and never had a problem getting pregnant. My mother and father only have me and it took them six years. Everyone is different. I would tell you just not to give up. Yes, it is safe to get pregnant while taking the drug. It's in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. However, you should still talk to your doctor if you are pregnant. Also, it does pass to the breast milk, so make sure you talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Now, the heavy bleeding. The only thing that will stop the heavy bleeding is keeping your insulin levels down month over month so your male hormones decrease and your female hormones increase, thus inducing a monthly period. The bleeding is heavy because when you do have a period, it's likely several periods in one. When I go a few months without a period, my doctor prescribes a hormone pill that I take for a week that starts my period. The most important thing to do is to take the Glucophage/Metamorphin every single day. When you first start taking it, it can cause some bad cramps and bad poopies, so you might ask about taking the XR/ER version, which is an extended release version. That helps get rid of those symptoms. Also, it's important to exercise. I found that I need about 240 minutes of cardio every week for it to make a difference. Do your best to get as close to possible as that. And also strength train. Muscle burns more calories than fat. Hope this helps. Good Luck!"

PCOS - Heavy and painful periods.? Im 19 and was diagnosed with Polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos) about 2 years ago now. My doctors have tried me on the pill and metformin, neither of them worked, metformin did nothing and the pill gave me excrutiating pain in my stomach and back, however for the last 2 months I have got my periods but they have just been so heavy and painfull. Im changing my pad and tampax at least every 45mins to an hour, its starting to effect my everyday life I cant even go to work. Do you think I should get checked, is anyone else going through this. Would aprrecitate any help, many thanks xx I meant to add, my stomach is rock hard this month which is something I havent noticed before.

Biker Crazy replied: "ibuprofen is excellent for slowing the flow and if added with paracetamol (you can take at the same time) it will ease the pain. Max ibupfofen to take in 24 hours is 400mg every 8 hours. Rock hard tummy could be constipation"

Becky P replied: "PCOS is very tricky...been dealing with it as well. I had to be put on Metformin, clomid, and provera all at the same time before it would work for me. Then my Periods became VERY heavy as well. First off you could be bleeding so bad because your lining was so thick bc you didn't shed it monthly (periods) and secondly i don't think you should be bleeding that bad. You could be losing to much blood. I will at least call you gyno and ask a nurse and see if they think you should come in. Hope you get to feeling better!"

PCOS & Metformin? I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago... does anyone else have problems with taking Metformin for it. It comes and goes but I have stomach cramps and diarrhea that I think is caused by the Metformin. It usually happens the worst the week before my period... Is it just cause of the hormone changes? I thought about getting off the Metformin, but menstrual cramps and heavy periods or constant spotting is no better. Want to know if anyone else had this problem and what they did. Thanks~

Just a heavy period or any chance of a miscarriage? I am on the metformin, My first period on it I bled for 2 days just average on the 3rd day I bled extremely heavily and had very bad cramping, I was in the toilet on and off all arvo, and my tampon was having to be changed between every 20-45 mins for a while there, after that i was back and bled for the next few days just lightly... I took it as my first period with the metformin not knowing what to expect with it... does it sound like I just had a period? i heard u bleed alot when u miscarry.. just didnt know whether i could have infact been pregnant for a little while and didnt know or would there have been great symptoms i would have noticed?.

pinkspree replied: "I have had a miscarriage in the past and yes you do bleed a lot but I was in the hospital in the bed so I am not sure how much I bled.. You are also in alot of pain. I'm not familiar with metformin but I do know that they can really alter your periods and how much you bleed.. How long ago was your period before the first one while on metformin? If it was a month or so before starting that medication then you more than likely wouldnt have any "great symptoms" if it was only 4 weeks.. I mean, you CAN have symptoms by 4 weeks but most ppl, including myself didnt really feel any different until week 5 or 6. A missed period is usually your first sign.. If this period you are speaking of just happened then you could probably still take a pregnancy test if you wanted to know for sure as your body takes a while for your HCG levels to go back down.. If you do indeed discover that you were pregnant dont blame yourself if it resulted in a miscarriage.. you didnt know. Most miscarriages are a result of something not right with the baby as opposed to something you did. Hope this helps.."

metformin- 13 day period!! Help--? I started metformin a little less than a month ago. At the end of my second week of taking this (1000mg-) I got my period. When i started my 3rd week with 1500mg my period got heavy, and lasted for a total of 13 days! It was awful. Mostly heavy, then scanty other days. Just wondering how many women on metformin had this happen to them, and was it a concern? Should i tell my doctor or just brush it off? And one more thing: the DH and i are TTC #1 and im not sure how to track ovulation. Any suggestions? THANKS LADIES!!!

Ċrïაtïחå ♥ Clomid 2WW Round 2 replied: "I think you should talk to your doctor if it happens again. I got my period within a week of starting Metformin (have been on 1500 mg for 5 months). If was a bit heavier than it had been but it wasn't any longer. I would suggest charting your BBT to track ovulation. I was already doing it when I started Metformin and I wasn't ovulating at all. Second cycle on it I started ovulating. I use fertilityfriend.com to chart."

Is it normal to have my period for three weeks while on Metformin for PCOS? I had my period very lightly for the first two weeks and now it's ridiculously heavy.

pamelapelletier replied: "WOW, no this is not normal. If you are on birth control pills you may have what is called break through bleeding/spotting during the first few months, however a heavy flow period is not normal. I would call your Doctor immediately and tell them what is going on. If you are bleeding heavy enough to soak 1 pad per hour, then you need to go to the Emergency room. Metformin would have no affect on your cycle, except to regulate it, meaning making it more regular (every 28-30 days) Please cal your Dr to be safe... Pamela"
