PCOS And taking Metformin weight loss? I was recently informed that I have PCOS (Poly cycstic Ovary Syndrom) And was perscribed birth control and a medication for my high insulin Metformin. I am about 50 lbs over weight, I was told that I would lose a good ammount of weight just from the Metformin (Insulin drug)....Has anyone had such effectiveness from this treatment??? Oh, I know it does not excuse proper eating and exercise. But I don't over eat to begin with. I am not hoping for all the weight to just fall off, but the PCOS is what caused my weight gain to begine with....almost 80 lbs in a year! I have been thin my whole life...I just was hoping that with this new medication, it could be a starting ground for weight loss....I was hoping for about 20lbs....Thats what my indocranologist said....

mtwaites replied: "The metaformin will work on the metabolism, and adequately metabolizing your sugars. You will however, still need to do the conventional exercising and diet in order to control the rest of it."

cannibalchildxxx replied: "im on metforin with bc for my pcos. you really have to be consistent with the metforming like im on 3 pilss a day 500mg each max dose and i know i havent gained any weight with it deopends on how you eatr youd have to really change your dieting completely with that to see efectiveness and i havent really gained much with it but my eating isnt the best,ya know. when taking it at 1st youll be light headed, dizzy so start off with a half a pill, ask your doc. ^_^ Good Luck hunn"

girl_on_the_couch_inak replied: "i lost about 30 pounds........w/out even changing anything in my diet.........actually i started eating more and horribly so after i lost the 30 i gained back some"

hotbeaglemama replied: "It does help some but it will not cause you to lose huge amounts of weight, I lost about 10lbs in a couple of months. You have to stay on it. Metformin is not insulin and does not work like insulin. Metformin works in the stomach, and slows digestion or at least slows the sugars going into the blood stream."

Metformin and weight loss? Recently been diagnosed with PCOS and put on metformin as of today. I've worked with a personal trainer for 11 months, am very active (strength train 3 days a week, cardio 4-5 days a week) I follow the Abs diet and now I need help. I've done my research on metformin and I've read the good/bad about this drug, I've heard that some people actually gained weight. My question is anyone on metformin that lost weight if so how much and how soon did you see results. I will continue with my exercise regime as usual, this is not a question about how to lose weight I want to know when I can finally see results! This has been extremely frustrating for me, to work out for nearly a year and not lose the weight. I should also post that I'm getting married in 4 months and was just diagnosed a month ago. Time is ticking. I have about 27pounds to lose.

Rebekah G replied: "The reason there is weight gain is because Metformin can cause edema (swelling). Make sure you cut way back on your sodium, and drink plenty of water."

DrM replied: "Hello there. Most of the patients I have placed on metformin for insulin resistance or diabetes lose an average of 5-10 pounds and never greater than 10% of their body weight. If you weigh 180 pounds, for example, I would expect you would lose anywhere from 5-18 pounds (average - 10% of body weight). I have also read that, occasionally, people do gain some weight - but you will be happy to know that I have personally NEVER seen a patient gain weight in my many years of practicing medicine. You can expect this weight loss over a period of weeks to months. The main side effects of metformin are stomach upset and diarrhea. Hope this helps! Best wishes on the wedding plans!"

Metformin - Type 2 Diabetis and weight loss? If you have been diagnosed with Insulin Resistance Diabetes and are taking Metformin: What is your dosage, how many times a day do you take your dosage, do you take it before or after a meal, how much weight have you lost, how long did it take for this weight to come off, do you experience dehydration due to the diarrhea it can cause, does this side-effect cause hemorrhoid flare-ups, have you combined your medication with any life style changes? I would like to know if there is any validity in the weight-loss claims people are putting on the internet regarding this drug. Thanks!

branddxb replied: "my daughter has metformin for her insulin resistance. but the main thing she was told to do was exercise and diet. a very, very nutritious diet that gives her the strength to do the exercise. the only thing she has to cut down are carbs and no sweets. i will give you her programme if you want. my dietician said magnese works as well as metformin."

How can I get assistance with paying for my prescriptions my insurance wont cover? i am morbidly obese (5'9"-294 lbs)I have insulin resistant diabetes. In my treatment plan I am to take along with my Metformin 2 other drugs to aid in my weight loss BYETTA-and XENACAL. I also have neuropathy as a complication from the diabetes and am prescribed LYRICA. My insurance will not cover the XENECAL for it is a weight loss drug and considered a "frivilous" expense. Nor will they cover LYRICA for it is new on the market .Ineed these meds in order to live a productive life to help loose the weight so i will not be diabetic. I am 45. I want to live until I'm 75. With out these meds ,I could die in 5 years. The cost of these meds are -XENECAL-$230.00 for a 30 day supply LYRICA-$210.00 for a 30 day supply.

Scott replied: "Most drug manufacturers have programs in place where they'll provide financial assistance to you if you contact them directly. Check the websites of the manufacturers of the drugs you take. Good luck."

K_Alexandra replied: "At the end of most prescription medication commercials they mention that astrozenica may be able to help cover the costs. I know I spelled it wrong, but you might want to pay close attention and quick write down that number next time you see a commercial. Also, try calling the manufacturer directly and explaining your situation. Many times pharmecutical companies have organizations that they work with who give low and no cost drugs. Good luck!"

lindsey_osborne replied: "I am also diabetic and I understand about the high cost of medications... especially when the insurance companies won't pay. The best place to start in getting help is at your doctor's office. Most doctor's have all kinds of samples of medications lying around (just like the metformin), so just ask. There are there for the patients that need them and you definitely do. My doctor gives me samples of all my meds and it saves me hundreds of dollars a month. The second place you can possibly get prescription assistance is at your local health department. Call them up and ask if they offer any pharmacy assistance programs. These programs will help you to get your meds at little or no cost, depending on your income. Check with social services as well. I am not sure of your occupation or income, but they may be able to help if you qualify. I really hope you have some luck with one of these options and I hope your treatment helps. Good luck and best wishes..."

sunshine_today replied: "Oh my God, that jus totally sucks! Why aren't we rioting in the streets over this absymal lack of affordable health care in the US?"

scottg replied: "I also am type 2 diabetic and morbidly obese (6ft 420lb) I used to weigh 530 and for what you pay for those medication I only pay less than $200 a month for a meal replacement which keeps my diabetes in control (200). I do this 6 days out of the week and go 1 day and eat whatever I want. I got this idea from the book Body for Life by Bill Phillips. As far as your costs of what you are paying for these meds I would take the reciepts to who does your tax return and see if you could get that added to your refund. If you want to know more you can email me "

Willieshac replied: "Seriously, the best way is to go with Ameri Plan - no restrictions on pre-existing conditions. Or if that isn't affordable, you can get THREE months of dental, vision, prescription and chiropractic care for $23! That's a $20 registration fee and $1 per month for three months. Please contact me."

lah0288 replied: "hey hun well I was diagnosed with PCOS in 07 and was told to lose weight. I wasn't having a normal period anymore, but i wasn't TTC so i was not put on any medicines besides birth control. I was sent to a nutritionist and tried to diet the right way for a few months and only managed to lose about 5 pounds. It was really depressing to do it the right way and not get good results, so I went to a dietician and was prescribed phentermine diet pills. I started taking them one a day and within 9 months I had lost 60 pounds. The pills helped me cut out the bad stuff and gave me energy to exercise. I basically ate what I wanted but ate WAY less than I used to. As soon as I lost the weight my periods came back to me like clockwork perfectly 28 day cycle. The first month I was TTC i got pregnant. I am now 13 weeks and still havent gained any weight. I think it's awesome you are going to go all natural, it just didnt work for me. But it definately increases your chance of conceiving to get your body as healthy as possible beforehand. I wish you the best and good luck!! I know how bad it sucks to have so many things going against you, but don't give up!! :)"

sokrasie420 replied: "i was just married when i decided to go on a diet, i lost 22 lbs in about 7 weeks, eating healthy choice for lunch, those rotisserie chickens from walmart for dinner, with veggies, and within two months i got pregnant, i was a big girl and we were trying before but it didn't happen then i lost weight and bam, unfortunately ive packed on the pounds again, my daughter is now 4 and were TTC again, but it hasn't been happening, i just joined a gym to see if its true, good luck , wishing you the best"

What has metformin done for you? I have pcos and am currently being tested for type 2 diabeties,my doc suggested metformin to help with both problems, what has the drug done for you.......weight loss? better moods? less eating?? anything.

evette replied: "i was placed on it for irregular periods....i went off of it within a couple of days because it was causing me to grow faint feeling...good thing my husband it a diabetic and tested me,,,,it was causing me to go hypoglacemic....aka low blood sugar..."

Zia replied: "My husband, a type two diabetic, got severe diarrhea while on Metformin. Two weeks worth, and it stopped only when the drug worked its way out of his system. Same for Jenuvia."

Does anyone know of the effects of PCOS and metformin? I have PCOS and had heard that this drug can help level out the sugers and hear that it could help with weight loss, if any one could let me know their experience and the dosage. I go to the doctor tomorrow and plan on asking regarding metformin but just wanted some information first.

the_only_solorose replied: "http://www.infertilityspecialist.com/metformin.html this website has some good information on metformin used to treat PCOS. Metformin is primarily used for adult onset diabetes, it facilitates the transfer of insulin across the cell membrane so your body can burn the food you eat efficiently. One of the side effects of eating properly and taking Metformin is gradual weight loss."

starwhitedwarf replied: "I have PCOS and took metmorfin. It does not have effect on weight loss and in fact, I had an opposite effect. I GAINED weight and no I was not eating more!!! I do not recommend you take it or any other drug they try to make you take, like contraceptive pills. You only mess up your system more. Instead, I recommend you watch your diet. Eat very healthy, natural organic foods and excercise. I recommend you read a book by doctor Nancy Dune about PCOS and infetility. If that does not work for you, then you can try drugs. Good luck. EDIT: I would hope you try a natural approach to treatment before jumping to take metmorfin or any other drug."

K.C. replied: "Metformin effects EVERYONE differently, so don't let other people's experiences with it persuade you one way or the other. I have been diagnosed with PCOS for just over a year now and I have been on Metformin the entire time. I am also overweight with abnormal periods. The doctor started me on 2,000 MG of Metformin daily. You have to start off taking this medication SLOW because there ARE side effects. Many women report loose bowel movements, nausea, vomiting, weight loss (or gain), and extreme tiredness. When I finally worked my way up to 2,000 mg, I suffered from the loose bowel movements (which weren't THAT bad, but were made worse with fatty/greasy foods). I suffered for the first month or two with nausea, but that went away. I was EXTREMELY tired for the first 4 months on the medication, but I found that taking a multi B vitamin helped TREMENDOUSLY. I also lost 20 lbs the first MONTH and a HALF that I was on the medication and within the year that I've been on the medication, I've lost a grand total of 40 lbs without any effort on my part. My periods have also been much more normal since being on Metformin. Even though I've had not so great side effects, I am very happy to be on this medication as I feel that it helps me A LOT. Personally, I feel that the good outweighs the bad. There is a helpful website out there called Soul Cysters. I suggest checking it out. There is a very helpful message board there with LOTS of women who will help answer any questions that you may have. I hope that this has helped some! Good luck to you!"

Metformin? I am takeing Metformin. I read the info. on this drug when the doctor gave me the prescription. It says that it can be used as a weight loss supplement. One of the side affects on this drug is dirrea. Is thats why they say it's a weight loss supplement because it gives you dirrea and keeps you running to the bathroom?

Katherine_rpn replied: "Diarreha is a side effect of almost any drug because it something new being introduced to your body. Everyone reacts differntly and its just a safe bet that the drug producers make. Hope this helps."

Maria replied: "It will at first cause you to "go" a lot, this passes pretty quickly once your body adjusts to the med. It helps in the long term with weight loss because it helps your body to use sugar properly...a common cause of weight gain is your blood sugar levels not processing efficiently. Causing extra weight gain. Keep in mind that if you don't want to be pregnant take extra care when taking this med. It helps you with ovulation cycles as well....."

sprinklermedic replied: "You may be overweight because your body makes too much insulin, especially if your store your fat primarily in your belly. When you eat, your blood sugar level rises. The higher it rises, the more insulin your pancreas releases. Insulin makes you fat by acting on your brain to make you hungry, your liver to manufacture fat, and the fat cells in your belly to fill with fat. So the treatment for this type of obesity is to avoid foods that cause the highest rise in blood sugar and to take medications that prevent your blood sugar levels from rising too high. Avoid bakery products, pastas and all foods made from flour, fruit juices and everything with added sugar. Eat fruits and root vegetables such as potatoes only with meals. After you eat, sugar goes from your intestines into your bloodstream, and then immediately into your liver. Then your liver releases sugar back into your bloodstream to cause your blood sugar level to rise. To keep blood sugar levels from rising too high, your pancreas release insulin into your bloodstream. Insulin makes you hungry all the time and causes your liver to convert extra calories to fat and it constricts arteries to cause heart attacks. You need insulin to keep blood sugar levels from rising too high to cause diabetes, nerve damage, heart attacks, strokes and kidney damage. Glucophage reduces sugar release from your liver to prevents blood sugar levels from rising too high, so your body doesn't need to produce as much insulin that makes you hungry and causes your liver to make fat Glucophage lowers insulin levels , prevents many of the side effects of diabetes and can be used by people who want to lose weight. However, Glucophage is not effective when your blood is acidic from excess lactic acid and recent research shows that exercise, which raises lactic acid, does not cause blood acid levels to rise enough to reduce Glucophage's benefits . Glucophage, itself, does not raise blood lactate levels and is therefore considerably safer than doctors originally thought. Since Glucophage lowers insulin, diabetics should be placed on Glucophage to lower their requirements for all other medications used to treat diabetes"

bluehoneytigger replied: "I took it for about 6 months and lets just say I stayed in the bathroom. After every meal and in-between as well as in the middle of the night. It was forever interrupting everything I did. But I continued to take it cause I was trying to get pregnant. I'm a big person and in 6 months I did not seem to loose any weight at all. My weight loss started after I became pregnant. If you start to have this problem my best suggestion is cottonelle wipes."

TheHumbleOne replied: "I suggest you go to and look it up. My husband takes metformin for diabetes. It is used to regulate sugar when the body's ability to process sugar is faulty. I've not heard it used in conjunction with weight loss, but I'm not a pharmacist or doctor. Regarding diarrhea, it might cause it, it might not. Many drugs can cause either diarrhea or constipation. We can help ourselves in this area through diet. Look it up and ask your doctor for an extra minute or two to give you a fuller explanation of what is going on."

Missy replied: "Metformin does keep you running to the restroom adn is part of the reason it can make you lose weight, but the main reason it is given is due to insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, and when your body starts processing the insulin better, you don't tend to hold onto the weight as easily. Hope it works for you, and for most people, the bathroom trips will get better with time. There's also another form of this medicine that I find easier on the tummy called fortamet, it's a little more expensive, but I find it worth it."

ANGELA R replied: "Yes Metformin will give you diarrhea, but no that's not why they say it is used as a weight loss med, it's because theres something about it that decreases your appetite. But primarily it is used to in diabetes. But it does have an appetite suppressant in it."

Tabandrea a replied: "yes it makes you clean your body in order to lose the weight,"

sophiensamsmom replied: "I am on metformin also, it does help people who are insulin resistant lose weight because it helps your body use sugars more effectively!"

Question for Diabetic Metformin Users? I know this question is long, but its important and I hope you read the whole question. Thank You. I have a 46 yr old daughter who lives at home with me (she is handicapped) and has taken Metformin for about 3 years for her diabetes. Since June of this year she has complained of not feeling well. Chest pains, stomach pains and loss of weight. She is 5' tall and now weighs only 92 lbs. I am so worried. Her doctor has done so many tests and cannot find anything. I read that some of the side effects of Metformin are chest pains, loss of weight, stomach problems. So my question to you Metformin users.....have any of you experienced these side effects after taking this drug for a few years? Again, Thank You for any help you can offer.

bluedot replied: "I took Metformin for almost 2 years...i was constantly going to the bathroom--severe diarrhea , also had severe headaches...a metallic taste...i also lost weight, i had the chest pain too, i felt like i was smothering ...had rashes, my vision blurred...this medicine might be fine for others but it didn't agree with me at all ...I finally decided I had had enough...when i went off the drug after 2-3 weeks i felt a lot better..i was obviously allergic to it.i'm on another medication now, Glimeripide, it seems to be doing ok...hope your daughter gets to feeling better"

DA DUCTA MAN replied: "with chest pains i would urge you to have a cardiologist check her, with weight loss and stomach pains, a GI consult would seem in order. i doubt metformin would do it."

Metformin side effects? Any doctors in the house? I just started the drug for insulin resistance (no sign of diabetes, but slightly elevated insulin and significant difficulty with weight loss.) So far I've experienced extreme nausea, a lot of bloating, loss of appetite, and a general feeling of malaise. I'm curious as to the mechanism of what causes so many gastrointestinal side effects while taking Metformin. Is it the makeup of the pill itself that irritates the GI tract? Or is it a byproduct of something else going on in the body once Metformin has been introduced to the system that causes it? I've heard that since the drug reduces your body's absorption of glucose, the glucose ferments in your intestine. I have no idea about any of it. Any insight anyone can offer would be appreciated.

LovePharmacy replied: "You know, I was just wondering earlier today if someone would ask about metformin. I'm a pharmacist and one of my babies that I like to counsel on is metformin. Metformin is a great drug. There is no single guidelines for the treatment of diabetes. Both the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology put out separate guidelines but they both agree that metformin is first line for type 2 diabetes. Metformin increases your sensitivity to insulin both in the liver and the muscle cells so that your body can use glucose. It also decreases the absorption of glucose. It also decreases insulin resistance, triglycerides, and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Also, too, it usually does not cause weight gain. Most patients show no change in weight or may show weight loss. It lowers A1C and fasting blood sugar levels. It is usually well tolerated. The most common complaints are the ones you report. However, they will go away in about 4-6 weeks. There are several things that you can do to manage these symptoms: 1. Start with a low dose - if you can't tolerate your symptoms, call you doctor and see if you can start with just 500 mg a day (sorry if that's what you're already doing) 2. Slowly increase the dose. Each time you increase the dose, you may experience onset of the GI effects again. 3. take with food or after food If you are already doing this, then it's just sotmething that you have to wait out. It's your choice if you want to stop but I really encourage you to stick it out because it will get better. With some drugs, the GI effects never go away. I checked several pharmacy resources to find the out why these GI effects occur but could not find a cause. The literature agrees that those effects are very common but does not provide any reason why. You must have a healthy liver and good kidneys to be on metformin. If something goes wrong with either of those organs, you can't be on it anymore."

Derek W replied: "i take 500mg of metformin with food and don't suffer from any side effects, but everyone is different"

j@z!b replied: "Although most people tolerate metformin well, there are some potential side effects of the medication. Some examples of common metformin side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and gas. Also, there are some more serious side effects of metformin that you should report immediately to your healthcare provider, such as symptoms of high blood sugar, chest pain, or signs of an allergic reaction. As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with metformin (Glucophage®) or metformin ER (Glucophage XR®). However, not everyone who takes metformin will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the drug well. When side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can be easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. Metformin has some minor effects, including headache, loss of appetite, metallic taste in mouth, nausea, stomach discomfort, or gas. These side effects should lessen as your body adjusts to the drug. More Details at Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about anxiousness; cold sweats; diarrhea; excessive hunger; fast, shallow breathing; headache; muscle cramps or pain; rapid pulse; shakiness; unusual sleepiness; or unusual tiredness or weakness."
