Metformin Taste Facts in Q&A
Why do i get a bad taste in my mouth 3 hours after i take my diabetic pills (metformin)? Why do i get a bad taste in my mouth 3 hours after i take my diabetic pills (metformin)

mar c replied: "this problem is in your mind.....and your mind only...."

jamie replied: "I take mine immediately after eating and no problems with bad taste. only ever had bad taste when i took them without eating proper meal first."

Say it like it is replied: "You didn't give much detail so I'm making an assumption here. Your bad taste could be because of ketones in your body. Which means, the medication may not be helping and your blood sugar is still too high. Something similar also happens with your breath when you are on a strict low carb diet. or it could be that you just need to visit the dentist."

I have a sugary taste in my mouth all of a sudden what could be the cause? I have PCOS and I am on Metformin. All of a sudden tonight I got a sugary taste in my mouth and feel dehydrated, even though I drank a lot of water. What could be the cause of this? Is this normal?

Ash replied: "it's better if you go to a doctor....please don't take any chances....goodluck.."

Is it normal to taste sugar in your mouth? I've been diagnosed with PCOS which is an insuline resistant disease. And the doctor prescribed metformin for me. Sometimes i forget to take it and I get a sugary taste in my mouth, is this normal?

D-mac replied: "yh. whenever you eat starchy foods the enzymes in your saliva naturally break down the starch into sugar...."

How can i avoid bitter and soapy taste? i have bitter taste and some times soapy taste.even if i drink water,i feel bitter taste.i have sore throat and dry mouth and also gassy.i am trying to conceive, and as per my dr i am taking metformin, reductile and folic acid tablets and my last cycle was on nov 4. dear all, can anybody help me???? FYI i dont smoke as well as i am a vegetarian too

Jello F replied: "are you smoking? sounds like something's wrong with your taste buds Taking vitamins is great but prescription drugs...i dunno... have you tried drinking water that is not fluoridated, a berkey water filter helps a lot."

hhutchie replied: "i think it could be your medicines repeating on you! try taking your tablets with a meal. apart from the reductil which works better taken first thing in the morning at least an hour before food! also reductil can cause a dry mouth, and can make you a little gassy..try taking your folic acid before you go to bed at night instead of the day time. that hopefully should help and suck a mint after taking your tablets"

Katie replied: "I just started to get a soapy taste in my mouth yesterday. Woke in the night it was terrible. It's only 3 days after you posted...I just think that's odd....I am thinking it was from eating salmon alaskan from Giant and thought maybe they had a preservative in it....my husband had the same odor on his breath...we tend to eat different things but shared the salmon and I had more salmon than he did by far as I ate it for 2 days and he just one and don't take supplements. I am wondering what part of the country you might live in...we're in the east and maybe something as an alternative that something is in the water here...I am also wondering if you had fish recently, how long you've had this....Today I took a long hot bath and rode a stationary bike to help sweat it out...the sweat created had the same odor....I have been drinking water with lime....that 's the only citrus in the house right now to flush it out...I was also very gassy last night...I really think it's the same thing...please do respond."

just started metformin for pcos and I want to know how long it takes for the side effects to begin? Serious answers only ! From anyone who has taken it for pcos and is not insulin resistant. I have only been taking a few days but i have heard that it can make you very really unwell, I have a mellatic taste in my mouth of a morning and I wake up in the middle of the night very hungry. I am only on one tablet at the moment but I need to move up to taking three tablets daily, when sould I intoduce the second tablet. How long did it take you to fall preganant.

tylw85 replied: "I've been taking it since February. It was right around the beginning of the third week when I started getting sick. I was put on 4 pill a day dose but started with one. I can't take four because it makes me too sick. Stomach cramps, bloating, horrible loose bm's. It's June now and I just started my first clomid cycle (should find out in about 2 weeks if it worked). My doctor told me 1 pill for 7 days, then start taking 2, 7 days later move to 3. My dosage was based purely on my PCOS and trying to get pregnant, nothing to do with insulin. Other side effects? Sometimes I get a real craving for something sweet or if I don't eat I get a low blood sugar and have to have some juice. I hope it works quicker for you, I'm still waiting. Good Luck!"

Cilly1 replied: "I am also on the four pill a day. My RE (reproductive endocrinologist) said I am borderline pcos (I have some signs but not other) and he suggested I try metformin. I've been taking it for about three months now. I started with 1 (500mg) pill at breakfast for 7 days, then 1 at breakfast/1 at dinner for seven days, then 2 breakfast/1 dinner for seven days and then to 2 breakfast/2 dinner which is what I am taking now. He said some people can't tolerate the higher doses, and if the side effects were too bad I could take less, but to take the highest level I could tolerate. I didn't have bad side effects until I got up to the higher doses. They weren't as horrible as I had expected (thank goodness!). I definitely visit the bathroom more (sorry if tmi, lol). I've noticed that if I eat a lot of carbs, that is when gi side effects are worse. I can't eat as much, not that I overate before, but I'm leaving half my food on my plate (a good result of which is I've lost about 20lbs since I started taking it). I also get REALLY hungry if I wait too long to eat. I can't answer how long to get pg, I've been on bc for the last couple of cycles and we're planning to start ivf soon. Good luck! Hope all goes well for you!"

Erika G replied: "You can introduce the next pill in a week to ten days, but really, the key is to listen to your body and make sure that you've gotten used to the dose. It may take you a bit longer to feel okay at a particular level. I think it took me the second or third dose to feel the side effects, and for me, they were mostly diarrhea and some nausea."

cam replied: "I believe it is different for everyone. I started it a month ago, I still get the metallic taste which the pharmacist told me would stop after a week. On day 2 of taking it for me I had diarrhea which stopped after about a week. However I did figure out if i eat too much fatty meat I get diarrhea again. After 3 weeks of taking it I menstruated for the first time in almost 3 years. My doctor recommended following the South Beach diet to lose weight, since I started that I no longer feel like I am starving in the middle of the night, which before was like clock work at 2am always raiding the frig. Good luck with the treatment."

Ever since I started taking Metformin (850), my tastes for the food I used to love has changed! Why? Ever since I started taking Metformin (850), my tastes for the food I used to love has changed. I am not saying they have changed for bad things like cloves in a pie shell, but for good things like crisp salad with honey mustard dressing. I used to drink diet soda all the time, at least 4-6 cans a day, now soda is so disgusting that I cannot even open a can or take one sip! Now I drink Crystal Light or V8 splash or milk. I used to hate vegetable and fruit, and now I ask for extra broccoli and buy huge fruit bowls. I love bread, when I used to eat only half a bun/slice on my sandwiches, now I ask for more rolls. I don’t eat as much butter as I used to. I used to eat McDonalds and Taco Bell everyday and now that food makes cringe. I love tacos, but I have to make it myself or nothing. Greasy and chemically altered food makes me sick to my stomach. What is going on?

Tin S replied: "Side effects from metformin include a change in taste, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, abdominal bloating or gas, diarrhea, or skin rash. These may occur during the first few weeks of taking the medication but are seldom long-lasting. Taking the medication with food and starting out with a low dose help reduce side effects. The dosage can be gradually increased as side effects diminish>"

Metformin for PCOS- how long before it starts working? Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS and started on Metformin 1000mg last week. Having bad side effects- the runs, nausia, metallic taste and that results in lack of energy. I was wondering how long does it take for the met to start working - my periods were between 60-90 days and no ovulation. And when it does - how do you know it's working - do you still have similar bbt to before, similar mucus and the signs for ovulation coming? Did anyone found it ineffective?

mmmommmof3 replied: "i was on it 6 weeks before i got preg which is what i was wanting to happen and i also lost 10 lbs in that 6 weeks so it worked pretty fast for me i guess, found pcos message boards and it really seems to be different for all people. the first week my dr had me only take 500 mg to get my body used to it then start the 1000 mg the following week to ease side effects, i didnt have any at all"

amber replied: "Welcome to the world of Metformin. I am thankful to report that after being on Metformin for 3 months, I started having regular periods and got pregnant at 4 months. Check out for a great group of women with PCOS."

Whinni replied: "I was on metformin for over two years and it gave me regular periods back and helped me loose weight but it wasn't able to bring on ovulation for me so I had to use clomid to ovulate and get preggers... I found metformin always gave me bad side effects and they never went away I just learned how to deal with them!! It should start to work within two to four weeks (give period or loose of weight) Best of luck!!"

my throat scratchy, taste of blood when i cough, but NO blood, just that wierd taste, any ideas? can someone tell me why when i cough here lately i can taste the taste of blood, but NEVER see any blood, this started about a week ago, it's not everyday, but often enough that I'm writting about it,i'm not sick or anything like that, not on any medicatations byside birth control and metformin, anyways any ideas,i hate the scratchy feeling.

bethatsea replied: "This happens to me often when I have a throat infection. I feel fine but have a scratchy throat, occasional cough and I taste blood. Sometimes my throat infections go away on their own, sometimes I need an antibiotic. My throat infections are usually allergy-induced (from post-nasal drip) and come when the seasons change."

newmommy replied: "If you are coughing becase of a scratchy throat your esophogus lining is just irritated....chloroseptic spray....honey.....something to coat your tongue...the honey will help....spray will numb it temporarily...sounds like you have allergies...its that time of year...try an over the counter claritin...or zyrtec."

anyone else taking metformin? Is anyone else taking metformin to help in TTC? Or did anyone else take it with positive results. Also did it make you have a weird taste in your mouth? Thanks.

Trouble replied: "I took metformin, a while back.. I know a lot of people say that it's great taking it with clomid, but my doctor only put me on clomid for 2 more rounds.. But the only side effect I got was going to the bathroom after every meal. wish u the best"

reba replied: "I was on 1500mg for a while, had random diarrhea---meaning it would be sudden-like I barely had time to get to the bathroom. I decreased to 1000mg because of the horrible bathroom runs, and then I joined weightwatchers, and started eating less and better. I then started having hypoglycemia. So, now I'm on 850mg, which probably does nothing for helping me ovulate, but I do have slightly elevated blood sugars so the metformin helps with that. I don't think I ever had the weird taste thing though."

StarMum replied: "Yep. currently on 4th cycle TTC #3 with metformin and Clomid. and yes I have had 2 lil miracles thanks to Metformin Doc put me on Metformin when hubby and I started TTC#1, after I had 14 m/c's to exhubby etc was shocked I never heard of metformin until then. Anyway doc put me on it for 3 months (and wait until the 3rd month before starting to ttc) and told me to take clomid the 3rd month, well we conceived on our very 1st try, I continued the Metformin for the 1st trimester and now my lil miracle daughter is 5½yrs old now, then had another m/c a year after her birth (due to not taking metformin I think - required a d&c). Another year later conceived my 2nd daughter and started Metformin as soon as I found out about pg to try to save it and it worked my 2nd precious lil girl is now 3yrs old. and Now on 4th cycle with metformin 1500mg and Clomid 100mg again TTC#3. And yes I have the slightly weird taste in the mouth and excess saliva. (not a gross excess but more then usual lol)"

It is common to get period cramps without getting your period it when you are 1 month pregnant? I just found out that I am pregnant about 7 hours ago! I am so happy, but for the last 4 days I have been getting cramps that feel like period cramps. I am late for my period, but I am nervous because I have only taken a home pregnancy test, it says it was 99.9% accurate. I am going to the doctor for a real test on Monday, but I am wondering how common it is for women to feel period cramps, I also have breast tenderness. Also, I am on the medication Metformin for insulin resistance, can that cause a false positve? Should I not let myself get too excited? By the way, I all the sudden have no appitite, which is strange for me and some foods taste different (I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, just letting you know, lol). Thanks!

Nicky replied: "it sure is common, I did with both my pregnancies, it feels like your period is about to start any time. Relax it will be ok :) BTW your symptoms are common pregnacy symptoms and sore breasts are a classic one Congrats!!"

Loulla replied: "I experienced period pain style cramps off and on through the first 8 weeks or so pf pregnancy. I was told by my midwife its normal as your body begins to go through many changes internally to make way for the growing baby! Breast tenderness is also a symptom of early pregnancy. I'd certainly say that you should definitely go for another test though as the symptoms you decribe could also be signs of a very late period! Good luck and be sure to let us know how it goes!!"

anjelahoy replied: "yes with my son I had severe cramping and was expecting my period and it never came. Those test are extremly accurate. Start taking prenantal vitamins and looking for a OB congrats!"

xKATx replied: "I had minor cramps earlier this week. I am One month and a week preggo. It's the norm. hehe Congrats!"

mawxy replied: "i also had it when i was 1 month preggy with my eldest child (it was almost five years ago). others around me that time said its not normal for a fine pregnancy. so to be sure, i told my ob-gyne about it and she asked me to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound to rule out a possible ectopic pregnancy. 'coz with ectopic pregnancy, one of the symptoms is having cramp-like pains in abdomen, specifically on the lower left side. but it turns out that there are women, like me, who would normally feel that pain during their 1st trimester, because my TVS result showed nothing for us to be scared of and that me and my baby were A-OK. just an advice, dont let your negative thoughts and feelings succumb you coz it will have an effect to your baby. good luck!"

Holly G replied: "The cramping feeling is normal in early pregnancy, as your uterus is stretching to accomodate your new bundle of joy. Congrats! I'm not sure if Metformin would cause a false positive on a pregnancy test."

Luna replied: "yes its normal, being gassy is also a symptom, and you feel like you have a tummy ache\upset stomach a lot. I also had loss of appetite in the first few weeks but you'll be hungry again in no time, one day you'll just wake up hungry"
