Muscle Relaxant Valium

Does Valium work better for you then other muscle relaxants? Hey folks,
I have an unknown but chronic spasmodic condition that ive been dealing with for 2 years. It's been misdiagnosed as sciatica, but the current doc view is that I am having frequent muscle spasms (this doesn't rule out sciatica since that can be made worse by muscle spasms).
Anyways, I've been on a number of treatments. Percocet (horrid s**t and ultra addictive - better off requesting vicodin), Lorazapam, flexiril - Cycobenzaprine, Robaxin, vicodin, darvocet, naproxin, codeine, etodalac (terrible s**t for your stomach), demerol, tramadol, baclofen, clonozapam, diflonac, Soma, ect ect ect ect and friggin ect.
Right now my current script is for Ibuprofin 600, and valium 10 mgs. I find that this double combo works VERY well for me, and relieves pain far better then narcotics and non-benzo relaxants (soma works reasonably well with low side effects, but tends to cause rebound tension). I find it helps me sleep very well, and since I also have night terrors, it reduces the frequency of them.
I am wondering if any one has been on this therapy long term for spamodics (especially if you are like me and get mild panic attacks), and if has worked well for you.
Although the risk for addiction is low, i have heard that the risk of withdraw is quite high coming off of the diazapam.
Thoughts, questions, ect. I am concerned about the long term implications of using BOTH of these medications.
Thanks in advance.
James
Thanks, I will look into those.....i do stretch and i take hot baths with epsom salt.
As for looking up the meds, I already did. Seems fairly safe, BUT it seems to indicate short term use is best, probably due to risk of withdraw when coming off.
Point taken from top contributor. Soma definately is the least sedating while giving the most relief. Like i said the only drawback is sometimes rebound tension just before it wears off.
Headaches WERE extremely common and weren't experienced almost ever while taking the Soma or Valium.
For some reason, a lot of docs seem hell bent on cyclobenzaprine, but the side effects are quite horrid, and for me, it increased my night terror incidents. I do keep some cyclobenzaprine on hand however, incase my scripts do run out since doc appointments can take a while to be made.
The biggest thing is stress and mild anxiety attacks. THOSE cause my pain level to rise to about an 8.
Don E replied: "A pinched nerve in L-4 L-5 can cause shooting pains into the heel ,calf area not to mention the toes. These pains can be extreme depending on how you move.I found that it helped to stretch out at night and over a long period (YRS) of time the pain diminished.I used Solompa pain patches,China Gel (deep heat rub),and lots of prescription pills. You should look up the side effects of the medicines on the internet so you can keep from hurting your insides as bad.Good luck to you."
JAMES P replied: "Have you had blood work done to see what's your potassium level? Could be low potassium. Soma is what my wife takes for her muscles, she has fibromyalgia. Like you said, it has fewer side effects and works well. I would just use the Soma and stay off the Ibuprofen and Valium. Myself, I place a hot moist towel over the muscle when it starts to acting up and the moist heat relaxes the muscles. There is also a couple of pressure points that can help with muscle spasms. Just beneath the nose, place your thumb behind your upper lip and the index finger in the front, squeeze and hold for a few minutes. You can use the same index finger and thumb and apply pressure between the webbing on one hand, then switch fingers and apply pressure on the other hand webbing that is between the thumb and knuckle of the index finger, If you find a spot that hurts when you squeeze, keep squeezing until the soreness is gone. Also good for headaches. Start at the front of the webbing and work back as far as you can. If anything is bothering you like a headache or muscle spasm, you will feel a hurting point. Wishing you the very best and sending my regrets that you have to suffer with such an agonizing pain. Good luck to you sir.You may want to get a second opinion also,"
What is a good muscle relaxant for constant muscle spasms? I have an L4/5 fusion, fractured facet at T-12, peripheral neuropathic pain. I have never seen a doctor since my first back breaking (L4/5) accident who didnt remark at just how severe muscle spasms I was having. So they are constant-going on 10 years now. I take Soma but lately it doesn't work nearly as well as it used to. I have taken TONS of other muscle relaxants but the Soma was the only one that seemed to work. I have not taken Valium, which I hear is a very good MR, though I do take Ativan sometimes to help me sleep. I don't notice any difference in back pain when I take the Ativan.
So what are some ideas for other muscle relaxants that might work better for me? Should I ask to try Valium next time I go to the doc? Or just skip the MR's and rely more on a pain pill?
Any/All idea greatly appreciated!!!
finnegan- i am trying to get some idea FOR my doctor's appt. from people who are in a similar situation. thanks for the judgment and negativity though. :)

Carisoprodol and Soma. Anything Like Valium? I just received a prescription from my doc for Soma to treat multiple muscle spasms in my back, neck and knees. It's been awhile since I took a muscle relaxant, but I remember Valium was very good for what ailed you. Sort of took care of business and made you walk on air to boot. Should I expect the same from this "Soma" product?
Chas.B replied: "Carisoprodol is Soma,,,LOL,, and no they are not like valium,, they are muscle relaxers and valium isn't..
Don't get your hopes up about catching a buzz,,, they are completely different. But they do work great for muscle spasms.
I take 2 everyday and have for years."
srvivr_2001 replied: "I'd have to agree with Chas, you probably won't get a buzz from Soma like you did with Valium. I have never gotten a buzz from Soma, just less pain, not a really "GREAT" feeling. But then Valium never did anything for me at all. Keep in mind, a lot of that "good feeling" is psychological too. Gotta love the placebo effect!"
Valium and bad erections? I've been on valium daily (15mg) for panic disorder, I still get erections everyday if I want to, but I don't feel it's as "full" as it used to be, kind of like the muscle (pelvic) isn't strenghtening it..
As valium is a muscle relaxant I would think this is normal, but I haven't found any other reports of thsi on any forums...
Help? Should I be concerned?
thegreatone replied: "It's the medicine making you fill not "full," whatever that means (I think you mean not as "hard"), but you probably are still just as hard. If you aren't, go to the doctor."
How can I tell if its a problem? I have been worried about my Dad recently. He has a few beers after work - not a big deal. But I do try to check up on him. My sister found a bottle of vodka in his sock drawer. I don't know how much he drinks a night since he doesn't do it in front of us. He sleeps a lot but has only been obviously drunk in front of us, maybe, three times in the past seven years. I got really worried when he got some darvocet from my Grandmother...so I checked his medicine drawer and found valium, darvocet and a muscle relaxant. But I don't know if he actually takes any of it. Some of the prescriptions were a bit old. I don't want to make a big deal out of it. I already feel like a terrible snoop. If he went through my stuff I would be pissed. He does have problems with arthritis pain and a leg injury. Maybe these medicines are legitimate? Most are prescriptions from his doctor. The doctor would know if it was a problem.
Sorry this is so long.
As an aside...my mom passed away last year. I am the oldest child living at home. His behavior has not changed much since she passed away (as far as substance use...as far as I can tell).
J3NN replied: "If he is hiding this stuff, it is a problem. However he COULD be hiding it to keep it away from children in the house.
Dont confront him with this, as he will know you were snooping, and he may become defensive. It could turn into a huge fight."
darknesspunk06 replied: "Keep an eye on him for a while. Call a doctor and tell him what you told us and ask if it sounds like alcohol and pain killer addiction. As long as your dad doesnt get violent it should be ok. Keep a close eye on him and what he does, he may need therapy."
Brando replied: "VERY good question! A lot of teens deal with this. I think the best thing to do is talk to your mother. If she thinks it's a problem, then she'll take it up your father. Good luck!"
kristine v replied: "I would worry, it's your dad. However, if the prescriptions are for him and some bottles are old, then that would take a little weight off my shoulders. Just keep an eye out, those medicines are highly addictive if not taken properly. And some doctors write prescriptions left and right and don't realize or maybe don't care if they wrote the same one a week ago. The pharmacy where they get filled are the one's that will put a hault on it. (My sister-n-law has a problem.) As far as the drinking goes I would worry, my dad use to be the same way as far as having a couple in the evening. I don't know that he ever had any hidden in his drawer, talk to him, maybe he is overly stressed. Sometimes if you talk and allow them to get things off their chest that have been building up it helps ~ everyone. Good luck to you!!"
bugger29 replied: "count the pills in the bottle, keep track of how many there are keep checking every few days that should give you an answer good luck"
Poll call in at text "36228" has Palin winning with 86%, Biden 12%, right or wrong? That seems correct to me. Sarah Palin was outstanding. Biden must have taken a couple of muscle relaxants and a valium. Poor old Joe. The energy, wit and personality was a super job.
Okay, now the next big thing is we working people must slap down that GD traitorous investment banksters and their chosen man, Obama.
Gardener for God (formerly dmd) replied: "It is correct!
Palin was outstanding and brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!"

can he sue for malpractice? (sry, kinda long)? My fiance was in a car accident at work (he was rear ended at a red light, and he smacked the back of his head very hard). I picked him up and drove him to the ER. When we got to the registration desk we told them what happened and they took him right in. Once in with the nurse, he said that he had hit his head pretty hard, and couldn't remember if he lost conciousness or not. He told them that he was vey dizzy and had a severe headache. His head hurt so bad that he had to keep his eyes covered from any light. All they did was take an x-ray and give him a shot of morphine, and sent him home. They diagnosed him with a neck sprain. For the next week his headache kept getting worse, to the point where he couldn't even get out of bed. Then towards the end of the week he started getting very confused, and forgetting things only seconds after they happened. My mother told him to get a ct scan to check for a concussion, so we went to a different ER who did a ct scan and found a concussion and put him on valium, and muscle relaxants because his neck was very tight. Can he sue the first hospital for malpractice because they didn't check him for a concussion when it was pretty clear that he might have one?
Spirit Led replied: "Contact a lawyer who deals with accident victims. There's one in every major city. They will help you with this."
Chris replied: "It sounds like your fiance has been the victim of personal injury by the other driver and medical malpractice by the staff at the ER. He could receive a large compensation out of it. He could sue the driver of the other car and the hospital. I suggest you submit your case to. Someone will then review your case and put you in contact with one of the best lawyers in your area for free. Good luck, hope all goes well."
Is it unusual for sedatives to keep you awake? Diazepam and sleeping pills.? I was prescribed Diazepam (Valium) as a muscle relaxant for a back injury I have had for 10 years now. As it can be highly addictable and I don't want to go down the route of being constantly dependent on it so I only take it when the pain is at it's worst and I really need to relax the muscle spasms. However, when I take it, I find it keeps me wide awake! It's now 2am and usually I am asleep by 9:30pm when I have work the next day. It's not just a coincidence anymore. I have been writing everything down, when I take it, how much sleep i get..... And EVERYTIME I take it, I stay awake all night. Even the dosage is high. I take 5mg. I have even doubled this dosage on one occasion to see if it would make a difference, but nope! I am beginning to think there is something wrong with me that counteracts sedatives, is this possible? Also, about 18 months ago, I was prescribed sleeping tablets for insomnia which I get from time to time... After 3 months of medalling with the dosage I gave up... they just did not send me off to sleep! All they done was chill me out, paralyze my whole body but I was still WIDE AWAKE. It's not fair :-( There has to be some sort of a medical explanation for this??? Can anyone help please? I don't want to go to the doctor in case he thinks I'm imagining all this.
The Doctor's wife replied: "Do they ever make you feel like I'm feeling? Maybe sleeping pills and anticonvulsants (what I'm taking) sometimes just turn your brain off?? I'm really confused too and don't want the doctor to think I'm crazy either.
How I'm feeling kind of sounds somewhat similar... maybe??? :

Why was the media so quiet about this? Al Gore III, 24, the son of former Vice President Al Gore was arrested on July 5, 2007, for possession of marijuana and prescription drugs. The younger Gore was pulled over shortly after 2 a.m. for allegedly driving his Toyota Prius about 100 mph down the San Diego Freeway. According to Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino, deputies detected a "strong odor of marijuana" approaching the vehicle. A search of the vehicle turned up marijuana, as well as the painkiller Vicodin; addictive anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax; muscle relaxant Soma, and the amphetamine Adderall, which is commonly used to treat attention deficit disorder. Gore III was booked on four charges, including possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of controlled substances without a prescription. He was released on $20,000 bail approximately 12 hours later.
This was not his first run in with the law. In 2000, he had been ticketed for driving at 97 mph in a 55-mph zone. In 2002, he was ticketed for DUI, and his license suspended. In December 2003, he was pulled over and arrested for possession of marijuana, in Bethesda, Md.

amazin'g replied: "lol I didn't think Prius could go 100 mph!! So much for saving energy.
The media would never...never...report something that made the Gores look bad. They have a vested interested in being loved by their own."
ADG replied: "I don't think they were quiet about it. I remember hearing about it back then. But of course if it was a Republicans kid it would have made bigger news."
E-ma replied: "I suppose it made news somewhere, but I personally don't find it to be a big deal.
Now if it happened to a currently elected government official, then I'd want to know who's breaking the law on my tax payer dime."
Kamil K replied: "It was covered by a lot of News Ex: ABC7,FOX and others."
leslie S replied: "I heard and read about it. Heard Rush doing his little chuckle while reading one of the AP reports on the air. Thought it was funny coming from an OXY head but what are you going to do.
Perhaps someone realized it was the father who sought the limelight and coverage, not the son. who should be treated like any other wrong doer."
What can I do to fix my locked jaw? I woke up with my jaw locked. Over the past year, the left side of my jaw has been clicking when i wake up, and recently its been locking. My orthodontist suggested that I apply heat, then ice, right before going to bed. I did that last night, and today i woke up with a severely locked jaw, which has been present all day long.. I have never had it last longer than a few hours. It really hurts to try to move and open my mouth. I haven't been able to eat all day. It's almost 10 PM. should I go to the hospital to see if they will prescribe me any medicines? I am afraid to just go to sleep because I GET IT in my sleep, and I'm thinking it will just make it worse. Maybe they could prescribe valium as a muscle relaxant? I don't know! I have tried everythinggg to fix it! massages, aspirin, even homeopathic medicine and tobacco! Nothing has helped me all day. I'm panicked!
kjw replied: "I guess you could go to the ER. They might be able to fix it. They certainly could prescribe medicines to help with your discomfort. I tend to think that unless the ER has oral surgery residents around, it may not get fixed or completely addressed as I don't think most physicians know a lot about treating this condtion.
I would ask your orthodontist soon to refer you to an oral surgeon for an evaluation of the TMJ/TMD problem.
Best wishes with that."
