Pain relief for arthritis, what really works?? ? I have chronic pain from arthritis in neck back and hands...I take pain meds and NSAIDS for inflammation. I am not getting enough sleep because the constant nagging pain keeps me awake. What non prescription tips to fellow suffers use for management of pain stiffness and inflammation of arthritis...I am tired of the suffering already

JAMES P replied: "My wife has arthritis and fibromyalgia and she takes Soma at night to help with the pain and sleep. They have these things called Therma Care or something like that. They are pads that keeps heat going to wherever you apply them for eight hours. I hope you know what I mean. Arthritis and Fibromyalgia also effects the muscles and nerves. She takes a hot shower before bedtime and I massage her shoulders, back of her neck with Aspercream. She applies it to her hands. Our pharmacy has what is called Perform, that comes in a cream or a roll on container like under arm deodorant. It has an odor to it but disapates quickly. You don't say what meds you are taking, but my wife takes MS Contin 45 Mg's 3 times a day and some Percocets. She also takes 300 mg's of Nuerontin for nerves ends. Without these drugs, she wouldn't be able to move. But if you could do it, exercise is the best thing for arthritis. Do to other problems, she can't even do that. I know what you are going through and I wish I could tell you some miracle cure, but there just isn't any. I've checked. So I wish for you the very best and let's keep hoping that sometime in the near future, they find a cure. Arthritis and it's discomforts is something that you are just going to have to live with. Maybe exercise will help you, it would be worth a try. Good luck"

gillianprowe replied: "You do not state what type of Arthritis? You do not state what pain meds you are on, let alone NSAIDs. Their are over 50 different types of NSAIDS and it will take you a few attempts to find the one that suits you best. Same with the pain medication. That is why you need to see a Rheumatologist. I have RA had it since I was 21, now almost 50 and still mobile. Best of Luck"

mick G replied: "I have degenerative arthritis. In hindsight, I have come to realise that mental attitude has a great deal to do with how we cope with pain. Anti-depressants in conjunction with occasional pain meds have dramatically improved my life. Sometimes small changes can have a snowballing effect. Chronic pain just goes on and on, the profound effect that anti-depressants had was that instead of being depressed by the pain, I am pissed off! Please take a moment too ponder this. I take pain meds for an occasional holiday. I don't know why but staying as active as I sensibly can seems to help limit the amount of pain."

After a year of severe neck pain following an accident I have been told I have extensive arthritis. despite ? despite hefty pain relief I am in agony and unable to sleep. I am waiting to see a consultant for gold injections but does anyone have any tips as to how I can improve life. I don't give in easily and push myself to the limit but am struggling and want to get as much quality life as possible. i am newly married with a wonderful husband, children and grandchildren and hate them seeing me struggle. Thanks guys

GER C replied: "Maybe pushing yourself to your limit is taxing your back. I too have a back injury and I go for an MRI scan on the 3rd Nov., and I know what it is like to be in pain. Yoga has improved my life somewhat so suggest it to your GP and see what he/she says."

Maxi Robespierre ii replied: "sorry to hear that you have problems. Keep taking the pain relief and spend more time in bed relaxing. Slow down a bit instead of trying to keep up with little children. They will wear you out."

dumbo replied: "Sorry to hear all about your trouble with pain. Follow all the rules to do with arthritis like not eating acid food oranges and stuff. I had a pain for 18 years different to yours but I noticed the pain did change. It was as if the body gets used to it and shuts off the pain signals. I don't know. I only added that information to try to say perhaps the pain will get easier eventually."

trees75094 replied: "Do not (I repeat- do not) keep going. You have problems and you need to address them, not ignore them. Pain is our bodies way of saying, hey - that hurts - slow down! Talk to your doctors. Try heat and cold therapy, massages, biofeedback, neck braces - try whatever they suggest. You never know what may help you. I would see a pain specialist for further evaluation. They may be able to help you with injections or medications for your pain. I'm so sorry you're in such pain. I hope you find some treatments to help you. Keep looking, don't give up - and please, stop and smell the roses. Don't keep pushing yourself."

What pain relief can my mum take for osteo arthritis? My mum who is 70 has been suffering with acute pain now for the last 7 weeks. One G.P. told her she had a trapped nerve in the neck but now another one has said she is suffering with osteo arthritis in her neck and it is crumbling. A lot of her pain comes from her shoulder but most of it runs down her left arm. Can anyone shed any light on who is right and what can she take for the pain? She is at her wits end and hardly getting any rest or sleep because of the pain.

kelly replied: "Try Advil liquid gels."

frisbee45uk replied: "i would tell her to go back to doctors for some co-codamol tablets, they are very good for this type of pain as i have arthritus in my toe and they do help, she should not have to suffer in pain. good luck.."

Zmithy replied: "I am sorry to hear your gran is in so much pain. My nanner used to have me rub deep heat on her back and neck, I think the smell was so strong it jammed the pain receptors in her brain. Did you know Rose hip syrup has just been found out to have something in it that makes it good for Arthiritis sufferes. I think that cammomile tea can be given as a very mild sedative to help relax tense rigid muscles that contract in pain."

cat's eyes at night replied: "She should see her G.P. again. Depending on any oher medication she may take, her could prescribe something like Dihydracodeine, Co-Codamol, or Diclofenac. hope she gets on OK"

Sue C replied: "I have arth. bad in my whole spine, so too well know the feelings. Have been doctoring for it 5 yrs. now. She HAS to get relief from it. She can try over the counter meds., but they aren't going to help for long. She really needs a Dr. who is going to take care of her properly. I can't believe that Dr. let her leave w/o dispensing anything for her for her pain...IF she can, I'd advise she go to a pain management Dr. They are the ones who are going to care for her PROPERLY. That's who I had to end up with anyway. He is the only one who has done me any good whatsoever. Have been taking pain meds. for 5 yrs. now, just had a procedure done on my spine last Monday & I have NO pain whatsoever! I am finally pain free for the first time in 5 yrs. These Drs. know what they are doing as that's all they do on a regular basis. They are specialists. That's what I'd really advise rather than have her bounce around from Dr. to Dr. & find no rellef as they are NOT specialists in pain management."

oldknowitall replied: "Try bromalain. It is a natural product made from pineapple and helps a lot with pain. If it were me, I would take her to a chiropractor. I have been helped by one and so have lots of folks. Some people wouldn't go for anything , but since I have had good luck, I can recommend their type of help. It is so much better than popping RX drugs."

Dr Frank replied: "The 2 diagnosis are not incompatible. At 70 she will inevitably have osteoarthritis in all her joints, everyone does. She will probably also have some osteoporosis which will produce some wedging of the vertebrae. This will cause nerve trapping which may radiate pain to the shoulder. 70 year old may run into stomach problems if they take anti-inflammatory drugs unless they take stomach protectors as well. Simple pain killers can produce problems with brain function and if they contain codeine can produce constipation, confusion and addiction, particularly in the more elderly. What I am really saying is though there should be an easy answer to your question, however there is no straight forward one as all the options have potential problems. She needs to go back and chat over the options with their various risks with her GP."

fumble queen replied: "my mom also had suffered from enormous arthritis pain and a friend told me to visit a very helpful site that helped us get relief from pain. for more useful help check out this site"

Sweet Serenity replied: "Cherry juice concentrate. I used to work in the produce department in a grocery store. people came in all the time looking for it. They swore by it. some bottles even say on it that it is good for arthritis. it might help with the pain"

what homeopathic remedies for pain relief are appropriate for cats with arthritis? My cat also has a large fibrosarcoma on her neck.

biker550_uk replied: "You can buy a mixture of chrondroitin and glucosamine wich is what i was advised by a vet for my dog with arthritis."

soozemusic replied: "Half of a regular aspirin works. I give a whole one to my 14 year old dog for her hips. (Vet agreed it was okay). I have two cats and it does help if needed. Crush up in your cat's food."

corneliusdvm replied: "I do NOT recommend the home use of aspirin for a cat simply because the side effects can be severe (intestinal ulceration, perforation, and heart failure) and may result in severe illness and even death. There is a "homeopathic" drug called Cosequin (Chondroitin/Glucosamine) that you can try on your kitty. They come in capsules and are labeled for use in cats (you'll have to go to a vet's office to purchase these). I would say that about 50% of my patients respond well to Cosequin alone, however, your cat may need another type of pain med (narcotics, non-steroidals labeled for use in cats). Also, in regards to the fibrosarcoma, I would bet that your cat is experiencing pain associated with the cell destruction and pressure of the mass expansion, so you may want to address this issue with your veterinarian as well. If there is anything else I can do to answer your questions, please contact me."

junzfour replied: "A very soft bedeing and a warm place for those bones.Don't use a heating pad for it may disfunction and overheat or shock and death. Talk to Vet."

Need suggestions on what to take for pain of Fibromyalgia and osteo arthritis .Stomach bleeding; stopped Nsaid? Tried other FM rx,s; bad side effects;now on Savella and Tylenol for pain..helps only a little. Also prosac for long time..really helps depression. Savella helps fibrofog, but need more pain relief. Dont know if its mainly OA causing pain and Dr. says I,ll need narcotics for arthritis pain(bone spurs etc in neck, thumb also sciatica), but hate to start on them. Dispite Protonics(on acid blockers for years) now have occasional stomach pain.Is high dose of Savella causing more bleeding or irritaion? Should I go back to 100mg?( I think I had more energy then. What might help OA pain without more GI distress and let me see if Savella helps more than just fibrofog. I'm now taking 200mg Savella.,Trazadone(100mg)at night with 1/8mg xanax for sleep,1300mg acetametaphen 3xdaily and prosac 20mgdaily. also glucosamine/chondroitin and vitamins. Still fatigued alot with pain. What narcotic wont irritate stomach or make me feel "zonked" . Dr. said start with Tramadol, butI read that its hard on stomach. Would appreciate any input.

Starkissed replied: "I have Fibro and I have been on Tramadol for three years. It's one of the only things that ever worked. It doesn't hurt my stomach but it can slow down my GI tract a bit so I usually take a day or two off a week so that it can go back to normal again. But the Tramadol does help and I suggest that you try it. It makes it much easier to move around and walk for me."

Suggestions for pain relief please? Hit by drunk driver 20 years ago resulting in wedge fracture of neck, two prolapsed discs and now arthritis in neck and back. Also one prolapsed disc in lower back and fibromyalgia. My doctor has advised staying off the pain killers I've been taking for many years and I agree as they don't work any more they're more of a crutch. Had Physio including traction which was great while on the machine but when everything settled back into place the pain returned. Had Accupuncture, that didn't work. Practice the exercises from Physio daily and try to keep mobile and build muscles around back and neck with walking. The pain is increasing at an alarming rate and my hands are cramping making me drop things, also my left arm often feels cold and weak although is warm to the touch. My doctor is at a loss to sugest anything else and I am getting realy down because of the constant pain and the restrictions it causes. Anyone have any sugestions for exercises or relaxation techniques?

binki1961 replied: "I too was in a accident hit by another car many years ago and i had to have Major neck/ spine surgery tried all the things you mention but they didn't help me either i now take robaxin muscle relaxer and normal pain medication other muscle relaxer is baclofen 10mg but if things are really bad there is morphine sulphate tablets. I also go to the hospital every two weeks for local anesthetic injections in my head and neck and shoulders and have for the past 6 years painful but great to get some pain relief for a few days, its the only thing that keeps me mobile. good luck in your search!"

gawd0 replied: "Are there any pain centers in your area? So sorry about this. There is meditation or hypnosis. If all else fails- who is some doctor to tell you to live with the pain?- take the meds. You need some quality of life- get a buzz or not/ addicted or not-you should be able to have some pain-free time. Just don't drive or drink- stuff like that. I don't mean to sound frivolous about it (not trying to be a smart *ss). Hope you find relief. There is also chiropractic, but I'm not sure if that is something you'd be comfortable with."

DYNAMITEBERT replied: "SLIP DISC WILL CAUSED PAIN BROUGHT BY THE TEAR IN THE NERVE ENDINGS. NERVE PAIN ARE RELIEVE THRU PAIN KILLERS(PARACETAMOL,IBUPROFEN) BUT SOMETIMES IT WILL RETURN. TRY TAKING BITAMIN B ALSO. MILD TRANQUILIZER AS PRESCRIBED BY DOCTORS WILL HELP. LIGTH EXERCISE HELPS : )"

Pangolin replied: "I don't know what type of doctor you have been seeing, but here are 2 I'd recommend: 1. Neurosurgeon. They can do a lot with spine stabilization surgery. Or not, if it isn't appropriate for your case. If you haven't been seen by one, I'd do it. 2. Pain management specialist. Contact the anesthesia department of your local hospital, and ask them if they have a pain clinic. Most do, or can refer you to one. They can employ a variety of techniques, with or without medications, to lessen your pain. Good luck. It sounds like you are doing all you can."

blarneyspeakred replied: "I too have major pain in my back, due to a congenital defect. Had major surgery and because I wasn't willing to spend my life doped up on stronger painkillers, I take Ultram. I've tried stronger ones, and short of morphine and oxycontin, nothing else even touched the pain. I live w/ a certain degree of pain, but my kids have a mother. I also tried all the exercises and everything else, but nothing has worked for me either. I wish you luck in your search..."

felipelotas1 replied: "Rather than going for tablets or exercises, what you need is to have your neck appropriately explored. Your symptoms are those of someone with a nerve compression (or various nerve compressions), and what you need is to have an MRI scan done, to see exactly what is going on. Best thing to do is to ask your GP for an appointment with a neurosurgeon, so this one can examine you and request an MRI (most likely) or a CT scan, and take it from there. In the meantime, exercising MODERATELY is not going to hurt."

ANJILA replied: "Chronic pain is one of the most difficult 'conditions' to treat. My GP & I have been frustrated & stressed to find an effective way of controling my most persistant joint pain, often exhausting his armoury of medication & extensive knowledge. Other medical problems left me unable to take anti-inflammatory drugs, so, we tried a 'TENS' machine(Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) after a few days of using this little black box with it's comfortable sticky electrodes, I was beginning to feel some relief for short periods of time & the more I used it the more relief I got, I couldn't believe it, now I use it regularly to maintain the intensity of nerve stimulation that I have achieved, which I require to control my pain. It works by sending a small electrical charge to the nerve endings, which then blocks the message of pain, from reaching the brain. It sounds so simple, doesn't it ? You may find that it doesn't seem to be working for you, but be patient, as the more you use it, the more relief you will get, as long as the electrodes are positioned correctly. Some people try it and give up too soon but all they need to do is, have pateince ! There are plenty of places on-line where you can research this info & even more places you can buy these units from but I do recommend reading 'KING'S Guide to TENS' by Alan King,Grad. Dip. Phys. WCSP SRP, it's only a small paperback but it's extremely helpful. I hope you manage to find some relief in the future, one way or another & try to stay positive."

fibro_cfs_gal replied: "I haven't experienced the physical injuries you have, but I do have Fibromyalgia and perhaps something from my own personal experience (and successes) may help. Magnesium and Malic Acid: I wonder if the hand cramping has something to do with a magnesium deficiency. I have found that taking a magnesium citrate supplement (300mg twice daily), with malic acid (1050mg twice daily) and liquid calcium (about 600mg twice a day) with meals makes a big difference to me; if I don't take them, I get major muscle spasms in my back/neck. Malic acid is known to be helpful for the pain and fatigue of FM. Pain relief: For temporary pain relief with no side effects, I swear by a natural topical pain reliever called "o24 Fibromyalgia". I'll include a link in the resource box below. Fibro and exercise: It's commonly accepted that exercise and stretching are important to Fibro suffers, but at the same time, you have to be extremely careful so as not to exacerbate your pain symptoms. I know if I don't stretch in just the right manner, with great gentleness, I will be in pain either right away or after-the-fact. I got great value from attending an exercise class at my local community center specifically for people with Fibro, but maybe a book on the subject could be helpful, too. Myofascial Pain Syndrome: This is a condition closely related to FM (call it a "cousin") in which "trigger points" develop in the musculature. When you press on these trigger points, the point will be tender, but it will also refer pain to another area (not to be confused with FM's usual "tender points", which when pressed, are sore but do NOT refer pain). I have widespread myofascial pain, and I bring it up in your case because I wonder if some of the strengthening exercises you're doing might be aggravating trigger points. See below for a link to the best site on FM and Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Note that not too many doctors, or even physiotherapists/massage therapists know about MPS or how to treat it...so the site below will probably be your best resource. Hope something here helps with your pain! :-)"

Mad Roy replied: "Wobenzym may help (The Aspirin Alternative - Mike Loes) MSM can be useful (The Miracle of MSM - Dr Lawrence) Magnets can sometimes give dramatic pain relief (Magnet Therapy - Dr Lawrence)"

Susan M replied: "MSM may be helpful. Fish oil may help, large doses, the kind with omega 3 fatty acids. In larger doses it is an anti-inflammatory. Chondroitin sulfate, often sold with glucosamin, may help. If she can figure out if she is allergic to anything and can avoid that thing, it may help. My mother had RA. It was horrible. She finally figured out that she couldn't eat beef or pork, mainly just chicken. She quit dairy products and nightshade vegetables (potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant). Those changes helped her stabilize her condition. Your relative may have other triggers. There are warm to melt wax and then coat your hands in the warm wax. RA sucks!"

DAK replied: "Hi Tuyo Here are the answers you need. Cause: Arthritis is caused by acids and waste matter in the body, which eventually become solidified and lock the joint. This condition is caused and aggravated by improper diet. Some of the worst intakes are eggs, bread, milk, meat, salt, sugar, etc., because they cause arthritic calcification. The use of extremely hard water (generally of twelve or more grains in hardness) will often accentuate an arthritic condition where softer water will help relieve it. Sometimes an individual with a good inherent structure can throw off the hardest water without arthritic effect. The weaker person may drink water that is not very hard and absorb from it relatively larger quantities of the inorganic minerals. Quick Action Plan for Rheumatoid Arthritis 1. Acupuncture treatment helps to reduce the body's aggressive defenses that inadvertently attack its own joint tissue. 2. Massage affected joints with rosemary, benzoin, chamomile, camphor, juniper, or lavender. 3. Diet plays an integral part in reducing or preventing the onset of all types of arthritic conditions. A diet rich in an abundant selection of fresh vegetables, and a wide variety of sweet and non-sweet fruits, soaked nuts and seeds, and whole grains is recommended. 4. Tomatoes, cayenne, black and long pepper should be avoided by person's with rheumatoid arthritis. Minimize protein intake, choose small quantities of fish, legumes, eggs, soaked nuts and seeds. Eliminate beef, chicken, shellfish, and pork completely. Eat no hydrogenated fats, processed sugars, dairy products, alcohol, coffee, or black tea. 5. Use the following powerful aids to speed and assist healing: Goji, Acai and Noni juice, bee pollen, royal jelly, and evening primrose oil are recommended, as is Shark cartilage, Wobenzyme, DMSO, MSM Manganese Cetyl myristoleate with lipase, and vitamin C. 6. Test for food and environmental allergies and avoid all foods and substances to which you are allergic. 7. Cleansing and Detoxification including colon and bowel cleansing therapies, fasting, kidney and gallbladder flushes, physical medicine, and homeopathic remedies. Isometric exercises, stretching, and yoga can help ease arthritis pain. 8. Constitutional hydrotherapy (apply two to five times weekly) or heating compress (apply once daily to affected areas). 9 Drink the juice of half a lemon before every meal and before going to bed. Best of health to you Cheers"

Seema R replied: "Joint pain due to arthritis and other reasons can be reduced and cured by making small changes in the diet and lifestyle of the affected person. I found the information at useful."

Cervical Spondylosis or Arthritis of the Neck ? Does anyone else suffer from this? How bad is your condition? How were you diagnosed and what kind of therapy or medications does your doctor prescribe for you? I was diagnosed a year ago by a neurologist I was referred to by my primary dr because of my everyday non stop headaches. He did a mri, cat scan and xrays and found that my neck was inflamed with arthritis. I've seen a orthopedic surgeon who doesn't seem to feel that my pain is as a bad as I tell him. He refuses to prescribe me any kind of mild pain medication when I need it. ( I'm not there once a month asking him, I go to every 6 months). The only thing he prescribes is antimflammitories. He has told me he doesn't want me addicted, and I told him I don't want to be addicted, I just want pain relief.I've seen addiction to pain pills, and its not my lifestyle. My primary dr doesn't seem to think its as bad as I say it is either. How do they know how bad I hurt or do not hurt? They cant feel what I feel.

gillianprowe replied: "Welcome to the club! Cervical spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the joints in your neck. Also known as cervical osteoarthritis, this condition usually appears in men and women older than 40 and progresses with age. Although cervical spondylosis affects both sexes equally, men usually develop it at an earlier age than women do. As you age, the bones and cartilage that make up your backbone and neck gradually deteriorate, sometimes forming irregular bony outgrowths called bone spurs. These changes, which are characteristic of cervical spondylosis, occur in everyone's spine. Still, many people with signs of cervical spondylosis on X-rays manage to escape the associated symptoms, which include pain, stiffness and muscle spasms. At the other extreme, cervical spondylosis may compress one or more of the spinal nerves branching out of the cervical vertebrae — a condition called cervical radiculopathy. Bone spurs and other irregularities caused by cervical spondylosis also may reduce the diameter of the canal that houses the spinal cord, resulting in cervical myelopathy. Cervical radiculopathy and cervical myelopathy can lead to permanent disability. Fortunately, most adults with cervical spondylosis — nearly 90 percent — will not lose nerve function, even temporarily. So they did a mri, cat scan and x-ray which will give him a excellent picture of what is going on and at what Stage you are at? For example if you have spurs, if the spurs are impinging on any nerves and so on. In your case it seems the scans revealed early stages, no impringement, no other affects except headaches. The possibility that wear and tear of these joints might NOT be causing the headaches! I have cervical spondylosis along with rheumatoid arthritis and other spine problems, all of which they have seen deveop over years via x-rays, mri and blood tests. Therefore they have me on fentanyl patches for the pain. However, when it got bad I had to wear a soft neck collar and I never had any headaches. I am thinking the two are not related, your non-stop headache has nothing to do with the arthritis. Therefore ask the primary doctor if it is related, or if the headache could be caused by something else? Best of Luck"

My left side of my elbow has a burning sensation, what could be causing this? Was diag with arthritis in neck The muscles behind my left shoulder blade ache and burn and sore to the touch. I get relief when I can afford a massage. Is there a medicine or therapy I can do to stop the pain. I was told that it is a chronic condition.

surgeon#10 more replied: "Sounds like something that I had, I think that you have nerve damage... Which might explain your neck problems too. Did you take any impact to your spine? Did you pinch something? I think you damaged a nerve."
