Prednisone Withdrawal Headache Posts in Q&A
Could this be Prednisone withdrawal? I was taking Prednisone (40 mg a day) along with acyclocir and some antiobiotics to treat both shingles and a bee sting that wouldnt stop swelling. I'm off all the medication now but i still feel unlike myself. I had incredible pain and tenderness in my shoulders back and chest for two days, headaches, and now i have lost my appetite for the past few days. Is it possible to experience prednisone withdrawal after taking it for only a week?

knicname replied: "It shouldn't if you decreased dose each day. Call your MD. Prednisone withdrawal includes: Headaches; Nausea or Vomiting; Body aches; Lightheadedness (low blood pressure) Severe fatigue (These are the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency which prednisone can cause taken over a long period). Google: mayo clinic>>search>>"prednisone withdrawal" Feel better"

LuckyLady replied: "It does take a few days to get to feeling like normal after the pred. but what you are describing sounds like it might be just that. I agree with previous post, call the doc if you are not better by Monday."

HELP! Prednisone and Withdrawal? I've always been prone to get very bad headaches. I was told over two years ago by my dentist that I "may" need a nightguard b/c of all the grinding down on my teeth. I went back to that dentist 2 months ago and was told I must get one custom made b/c I have grind my teeth to the point of having little holes in almost all of the bottom ones. So, over the last two weeks I have been going through a lot of physical problems that has me stressed out and anxious. It first started with tightness in my throat on and off throughout the day. Then, the feeling of a lump in my throat. Next pain in my neck and right shoulder. Fullness in my head. "Hyperventilating" type of breathing at times during the day when becoming very anxious. Plus, feeling of pressure in my eyes, dull ache in my bottom teeth and jaw pain. First, my doc thought it was acid reflux and prescribed me Prilosec. I had horrible side effects from it and actually felt better when I stopped. I went to an ENT specialist yesterday and he said I have TMJ. I'm going to get a 2nd opinion on Monday. In the meantime, the ENT said I have inflammation and prescribed Prednisone. I must take 20mg, twice per day for 3 days. I've read a bunch about this medication and I'm nervous. Will I have withdrawal issues from this dosage? He didn't mention anything about "tapering off" which I read many others needed to do before stopping this medication.

Bailey replied: "Hello, I have had to be on Prednisone before, but for many months (for Arthritis) I did need to some off it slowly, but only because it could trigger the arthritis again having a sudden changes to my body. You are only going on it for 3 days which it NO biggy at all; it's a common drug to be prescribed. Some side affects you may notice are waking up and being WIDE awake in the middle of the night and feeling really hungry. If it is inflammation they are trying to attack then I would also recommend taking ibuprofen, I personally like Aleve. Aleve is an anti-inflammatory (just not as strong) so it should help a lot too. Good Luck"

poobah replied: "I think you may be right. 20mg is a lot and you may have some minor withdrawal symptoms. It will pass though and you should be fine in a day or so. In the meantime don't try out for the Olympics because you will be cited for steroid use. Good luck with your problem."
