I was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder and i have a sample of Abilify, what does it make you feel like? so, yea. Abilify (aripiprazole) 5 mg. what does it make you feel like? and what would it make you feel like for someone who isnt schizophrenic or manic-depressive?

Your Friendly Jewish Accountant replied: "Abilify isn't used for bipolar exclusively, and I can't tell you what it's like because it's never been prescribed to me (it wouldn't work if the did). If you didn't need it, you'd probably just fall asleep. Dumb. If you actually have bipolar disorder, take it and see."

Andy replied: "I took it for bipolar 1 disorder. It worked for my symptoms but it made me super restless. (a condition they called akathisia) They tried other the standard treatment for the restlessness like Cogentin and Artane but neither worked for me. So in the end I had to give up on Abilify and switch to another medication. I function much better now."

gardensallday replied: "I hope abilify isn't the first thing that was tried. Standard first treatments would be lithium (for pure manias), depakote (more for "mixed moods), or lamictal (for more depression symptoms). Tegretol is another mood stabilizer, but is less often prescribed. Abilify is an add on med. Not generally a standalone med. I wonder if your doc is unduly influenced by drug reps. Maybe you tried and failed on other drugs already. I was allergic to abilfy. I think it may have helped, some. dunno. I got a rash after 5 or 6 days."

Donna replied: "I am bipolar and I cannot take abilify. It makes me agitated like crazy. Since you are newly diagnosed it may take several times to find the right meds for you. This is agravating but hang in there. If one med does not work, then have your doc change the med. Often it takes more than one med to get your symptoms under control. Just keep trying, it will get better."

is there anyone here on abilify? for anyone who doesn't know me, i feel like i have an obsessive compulsive problem. it's been going on for over a year straight with unwanted thoughts that i learned how to shut off and cope with, but this past month has been a different story. i could not stop my unwanted thoughts, they were taking over my life, and interfering with sleep and my appetite. i saw my psychiatrist today, and he explained that he doesn't think an ocd medication will have any slight improvement on me, because my obsession is focused mostly on one thought, but i do have many other thoughts sprouted around it, even though they aren't brought to my attention at the moment. he gave me 2mg samples of abilify. supposedly, it's supposed to slow my thought process to prevent me from going through the triggers that cause my unwanted thoughts. the medication isn't for ocd, but it is for manic depressives. the only thing is, i've heard very bad things about abilify, and how it can give you permanent risky side effects. i want to know if this medication can help me with my unwanted thoughts, and if i'll be alright to use it. i was given a six week pack. i just hope it works.

medic911 replied: "i was inable to take this med., i had racing thoughts, confusion, anxiety, while on this med., infact i could not even finish a thought process, try asking this same question at, the people there can give you more direction, several members are medical professionals or have lived with this issue for years good luck"

peppermintpatty replied: "I was on it briefly but it caused me to sleep for 3 days straight so I said no. In six weeks, Abilify will not give u any long term, permanent problems like tardive dyskenesia or anything like that. Try it. If it works use it. If not try something different."
