Michelle T replied: "Hi, this happened to me when I took this steroid. From what I remember the moon face disappeared quite quickly, but as for the weight gain that took ages. Just try and help yourself along as much as you can, I did not begin to lose any weight until I began to exercise and watch my diet, and then the weight loss was very dramatic.
Good luck. You will overcome this."
pumky_2001 replied: "A lot of this is water gain. Start drinking lots of fluid and avoid salt. The moon face goes away the quickest and the weight gain may take awhile. The hump sometimes never goes away unless you lose a lot of weight. The moodiness should go away as soon as the med is out of your system. The huge stomach obviously weight gain, so lots of exercise will help. Sorry you had to be on this horrible med but sometimes it is the only thing that works. Good luck and don't become discouraged."
Muscle spasms under ribs while tapering off prednisone? I am in the process of tapering my prednisone dosage down to get off of it. I was up to 40 mg per day and now I'm at 30 mg per day getting ready to go to 25 mg per day. The problem is that I am having SEVERE muscle spasms under my rib cage, both sides, and they are excruciating in nature. I can't move and barely breathe when these are happening. Is this normal when coming off prednisone? I have had broken ribs on both sides in the past. Could this maybe be the cause of these spasms in addition to the withdrawal of prednisone? Please help...I'm very concerned. Thank you!
redrock replied: "Normal ! This is normal when tapering off of this steroid. The problem is, you need to go back up an increment so that the muscle spasms stop. I would contact your dr and tell him that you're going through Prednisone Withdrawl Symptoms. He will or at least SHOULD, up your dosage just a very small bit, so that the spasms go away. Then you need to taper off SLOWER than before or you will end up with spasms in other parts of your body. I had this trouble years ago, and the muscle spasms were so bad that I needed help from my mom to be able to sit on the toilette. Horrible experience. Also, try drinking anything with calcium in it and also eat bannanas."
How long after stopping Prednisone will my Moonface go away? I have been on Prednisone for almost 3 months. I began at 20mg and tapered down slowly to 15mg, 10, 7.5, 5, 4, 3, and now have been off for a few days.
How long afterwards will it take for the puffiness in my face to completely go away?
Another Question: Has anyone experienced a daily FLUCTUATION in the puffiness of their face????
Thank you all for sharing ANY experience you've had.
formerly_bob replied: "For me, it never went away entirely - it caused fat deposits that permanently changed the shape of my face, but the bulk of the puffiness disappeared very slowly over about 2 months. I never had daily fluctuations."
What happens if you suddenly stop high-dose prednisone? I know doctors, when prescribing high-dose prednisone to treat something such as a severe allergic reaction or gout, will prescribe a tapering dose, going down by 5-mg increments every three days or so until they get down to 10 mg for three days (then stop).
Why the taper? What would happen if a patient were to not taper the dosage of prednisone and were to just stop, at a high dose, after having been on that high dose of prednisone for a while?
Just curious. I'm a medical transcriptionist and type it all the time, and I've always wondered, why the taper.
vadtrav replied: "never ever stop high dose steroids. these drugs should always be tapered off. the reasoning is that your body produces these substances naturally. certain steroids are necessary to respond appropriately to stress. when taking exogenous or external steroids, you suppress your bodies own manufacturing of them. therefore, stopping suddenly, leaves your body unable to respond to stress i.e. heart, blood pressure, sugar mobilizations, etc..."
What happens when you suddenly stop Prednisone? I was on 40 mg per week, and have horrible moon face and insomnia. I was told to taper down 5mg per week, but instead i Jumped to 20mg per week about four days ago. I haven't noticed any changes, but is this too serious?
Northgirl replied: "I think the reason you need to taper down is so that your own body can take over making your own steroids naturally, too fast and your body can't compensate. The drug causes the normal production of steroids in your body to turn off. You can have steroid withdrawl, and it can be severe and very dangerous if you taper too fast or especially if you stop suddenly. Among other symptoms, Adrenal Crisis is the most dangerous."
Sinus infection every time I reduce prednisone? I've been tapering my prednisone dosage for about a month now. Every time I get down to 5 mg., I get a HUGE sinus infection with unbearable head pain. Do you think the prednisone reduces swelling and when I cut back, my sinuses react by swelling?
angle a replied: "hey, it doesn't seem right... prednisolone should decrease your immune system, so if u get it down, u have to be stronger, and it reduces swelling, yes, but not infection, when u cut back cut back the sinuses react by swelling, , pain occurs, heach aches ocurs.... the prednisolon itself made your body weak, maybe becoz of that, you have become weak.... it's complicated..."
justine replied: "You need to stop taking the Prednisone when the course is over, which should be soon. Talk to your doctor, and if you haven't done this already, make an appointment with an ENT.
Have you had any CT scans during the periods when you think you have an active sinus infection? Have you taken antibiotics?
Lowering the Prednisone does not cause your sinuses to swell.
It sounds like you might benefit from sinus surgery.
Despite what a lot of other people say on this website, sinus surgery isn't really painful (I had sinus surgery a few years ago)."
When does prednisone start working for sudden hearing loss? So i have fluctuating hearing that goes up and down. The doctor prescribed prednisone 6 tabs of 10g for 6 days and then i'll slowly taper. im on my second day, when will i'll start seeing results?
megalaw replied: "stop listening to loud music
adriana takes care of her ears"
C replied: "Prednisone is for a sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) which would usually be something that is not fluctuating. There are a number of reasons why SSHL is speculated to occur but there is no sure cause or perfect treatment. Hearing can recover some without prednisone but there is some evidence that it can recover more with the medication in some cases. There is no guarantee there will be any recovery at all. If it's fluctuating (especially fluctuating in the low pitches) then it may not be SSHL. Are you dizzy? Many times a fluctuating hearing loss is a sign of Meneire's disease. Signs of Meneire's include roaring tinnitus, spinning and nausea in episodes of a couple seconds."
