My 9 yo dog hurt his back leg coming up the stairs. What is the dosage for Ibuprofen or Aspirin? How often? How long? He is a 40 lbs Dachshund. His leg is now curled up and will not put weight on it. Please Help!
Samantha G replied: "Half an aspirin then take him to get his leg checked"
doc's wife replied: "NO NO - human pain meds are toxic to dogs internal organs- keep him quite tonight and see your vet first thing you can
I'd be worried he has torn the ACL in his knee"
Joyeux_Noël replied: "Almost all human medicine is TOXIC to dogs! Take him to a vet right away to get him some appropriate doggy drugs and treatment."
cameo's mom replied: "Yes, I agree with Doc's wife here, don't give him anything and see your vet in the a.m. He could have just sprained it as well, but you can't be sure and he is in pain to be sure. But more pain if his stomach has aspirin in it overnight. He is a big Dachshund to be sure and I don't blame him for curling up and resting. Just let him be until the morning."
sleepycatz1972 replied: "NEVER give human meds to your pet without being under vet's orders. dosages and concentrations in human meds can be very far off than what is safe for a pet.
for example, ibuprofen is toxic to dogs, and could easily kill a pet. aspirin can cause blood thinning in your injured dog...and could mask the pain, causing it to harm itself even more out of ignorance. neither of these should be given to your dog by you at home.
plain and simple, the dog needs to be seen by a vet. it could have a torn cruciate, a slipped knee, all sorts of things...ALL of which need to be diagnosed and treated by a vet. keep him calm & in a small enclosed area so it immobilizes his ability to use (and potentially further injure) his leg and play it safe by bringing him in to the vet in the morning.
edit to jessica below: do you know this dog & his health history? can you guarantee this one doesn't have another problem going on which would be further harmed by aspirin? even something as seemingly *innocent* as aspirin has side effects and contraindications. are you positive this dog doesn't fall into that category? on top of which, dulling the pain w/o further medical care & instructions can make the dog think the leg is better (when it clearly is not) causing it to use it again and potentially injure it even worse. perhaps it is best you don't give medical advice unless you are qualified. someone who allowed their toy dog to eat a whole bottle of aspirin really isn't someone who should be giving advice to other pet owners."
Midge H replied: "Get him to your vet as soon as you can, until then please don't give him ibuprofen! Aspirin is best for doggy pain, other meds can lead to kidney failure quickly. I had a wonderful dog, a jack russel, she was my baby and I treated her just as that, with children's tylenol because I knew not to give aspirin to babies I thought it would be bad for dogs too. I lost her within a week. No one can replace your best friend always seek the advice of professionals."
ZeeLee replied: "a dog is like a person, don't administer any drugs to it without the advise of a physician.
it sound like it's pretty badly damaged if they wont put weight on it.
Go to the vet."
Jessika Lynn replied: "Ugh, you can give aspirin to dogs!! My chihuahua ate a whole bottle and the vet said she would be perfectly fine, and she was! I would give him 1 every 4 hours or something along the lines of a small child dose. BUT you should try and call an emergency vet for a more specific recommendation and take him in tomorrow to see what's wrong."
? replied: "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ANY DOG IBUPROFEN ! ! ! Ibuprofen is right up on the terrible death list with raisins, chocolate and candy with xylitol. Aspirin is the better choice, try baby aspirin but at 40 lbs 2 would probably work. But, I would think that I would take him to the vet. I know this cost money, but would definitely save money and a lot of pain for him in the future. Vet will probably give muscle relaxers and pain med and recommend crate rest for a week or so.
Hope everything works out for him and you and good luck. Take care.

What should I do for my dog who has a hurt front leg? My dog hurt her left front leg and won't walk on it or let you touch it. I don't believe it is broken but I am not a vet. I know you can give your dog aspirin or something to help with the pain. Does anybody know if this is true and how much I can give her. Should I ice the leg or put heat on the leg? I am just trying to help it and make her comfortable until the vet opens tomorrow. Any suggestions.
chzbrgr replied: "Call an emergency vet and ask about pain relief. When your dog's health is at stake the last people you want to be taking advice from are strangers on Yahoo Answers."
thistle replied: "Strict crate rest until you can get her to a vet that can make a proper diagnosis. You could call your local emergency vet and ask about something for pain until you see your vet. Never give any human medication without asking a vet first for the proper dosing instructions. If there is a chance your dog got hit by a car you should go to the vet today due to the risk of internal injury's. If she has just hurt her leg crate rest should be ok until tomorrow."
Single Worker 1230 replied: "Give your vet a call now. The pup should be evaluated today. Do not give aspirin without your vet's diagnosis and recommendation. Most vets have an emergency number that you can call to get a hold of someone."
How long can you give a dog aspirin? I am using baby aspirin, but want to know how long can I keep giving it to my dog. The weather hurts her legs, she is 7 years old, 40lbs.
encouraging_angels replied: "Never give her ASPRIN. Human medication is TOXIC to dogs, and some human medicantion can result in DEATH.
Please ask the vets first."
Kristi replied: "You should call the vet, my friends grandfather give his dog 1 everyday and has for a few years now. but i would call the vet to be sure!"
savethepitbulls67890 replied: "You should never give your dog human medication without checking with your vet. You should at least call your vet to see what they say."
Marc J replied: "Call the vet because u can endanger its health."
ಌ DP ಌ replied: "Ask your vet, since he was the one that told you to give the aspirin, he is the one that will know how long your dog should be taking it.. Might want to do some testing to make sure that it's not causing other problems."
Brandi M replied: "Despite what people are saying, BABY aspirin is fine. I wouldn't do it any longer than 7 days. I would talk to your vet about getting some vitamins for joint mobility. It seems to help."
is it okay to give a dog human Aspirin? my dog hurt his leg and I wanted to give him somethin' for the pain..would it be safe, if I give him some Aspirin?!
finniganwood05 replied: "NO NO NO!!!
Human aspirin can cause bleeding ulcers in dogs and will not provide adequate pain releif.
Take your dog to the veterinarian if he is in pain. If you hurt yourself wouldnt you go to the doctor?"
tony l replied: "It's said that coated aspirin is relatively safe for dogs. Dossage will differ.
Personally, I wouldn't play a vet though.
Take your dog to a professional.

Tylenol can KILL!!!!!!!!!"
?? replied: "NO it can kill the dog!! Dogs can hace some human meds but not that. Just search it on the web there are lots of sites that will tell you what you can give your dog!"
nursebubbles replied: "not really unless it has been recommended by your vet.
speak with a vet they will tell you what is best for your dog and his injuries"

k9 replied: "Is MUST be buffered aspirin and sometimes even that can cause stomach upset.
Call your Vet and see what dosage he/she recommends."
kissyourself replied: "I would think tylenol would be better. Usually if you call a vet office and ask to speak to a vet for a second they can give you advice if they arent busy and your question isnt that complex."
annelis replied: "no way!!! it can be very bad for him. my dad gave my dog aspirin once, and she was pregnant and all the puppies where born with birth defects and she was sick for a while. dont do it if you want pain pills for your dog go to your vet."
arial39 replied: "dont ever give a dog people medicine...call your vet and if there is something you can give her he will tell you, at least mine will, if its a simple matter he doesnt make me bring them in he will just advise by phone. and if its not a simple matter he tells me to come in for a look..which is better anyhow...then you know.
even if you know a medicine is safe for dogs, you need to know the dosage according to the weight of your dog."
Lynn replied: "baby asprin is okay! I give it to my dog about 2-3 x a week per the vet. It helps with her arthritis."
tnerb52 replied: "NO NO and NO.
It's not safe and potentially very hazardous.
Consult your Vet for his/her alternative."
Maria M replied: "Yes, but it must be a baby asprin. Never give tylenol. It would be best if you take your pet to the vet and have them give you some metacam, tramadol or some rimadyl for the pain."
Great Dane Lady replied: "Here's a list of otc meds that are safe for most otherwise healthy dogs. Don't use the asprin for long term."
steph replied: "After my puppy was neutered, I had given him Bayer Aspirin, low dosage, 80 mg, and I gave him a fourth of it, and he was fine. Nothing other than that cause the other otc meds will certainly be very harmful to him."
danielson replied: "Honestly i have dogs and when they have any small injuries or are sore i give them aspirin( 1-2 tablets, depending on soreness for a 55-70 pound dog) its never hurt any of them and i would say go ahead and use it just be careful on the dose."
iluvtorofl replied: "Vets commonly prescribe aspirin for dogs in very small doses."
My dog hurt her tail...can we give her Aspirin? I have a 3-year-old Boxer mix, who is over 75 pounds. She seems to have chased her tail... and actually caught it. It's swollen at the base, and she seems to be in pain (not major). She's done this before and it's gone back to normal in a few days, but I hate to see her in pain. Can I give her a baby Aspirin for the pain? If its not better in a few days, we'll definitely take her to the vet.
Jasmine replied: "Best to ask the vet. There's doggy aspirin. My main concern is you don't know the correct dose for human aspirin."
or1088 replied: "NO! You should not give your dog any type of over the counter medication, even buffered baby aspirin, because this can cause gastrointestinal problems such as stomach ulcers. Also, the drugs that they use at the veterinarian may interact with the aspirin, so better not give her anything. You can try icepacking her tail for 5-10 minutes to help with the swelling."
Dave-proud APBT owner! replied: "Why don't you just get off your ass and take her to the vet. Human medication should not be given to an animal unless on the advice of a vet. Despite what some people will tell you there are no vets on YA"
Britt replied: "No.. I've had dogs all my life and not just 1 or 2, but 12 to 16 at times. Remember animals are animals not humans although they might be your baby. It's never a good idea to give an animals HUMAN medication period. You should go to the vet and get proper medication or you might serverly hurt your baby."
AMagikalGirl replied: "Aspirin has been recommended for dogs by vets, but generally for joint inflammation and arthritis. Note - recommended by a VET.
Aspirin can be toxic to dogs and the type, weight, age and ailment of the dog all need to be taken into account before a vet would prescribe it - if they would prescribe it at all for your dog.
You shouldn't really wait for "a few days" with your dog in pain before going to the vet. This makes me think that money must be a concern and I do understand that. It costs nothing to call the vet though - right? Just call, tell them the situation, her weight and ask about Aspirin for the pain. Better safe than sorry.
You also say she "seems" to have chased her tail, so maybe you don't know for sure. What if she's dislocated it? Consider this carefully, she's relying on you to keep her healthy and happy."
the_charmed_1 replied: "i wouldn't suggest giving her aspirin as u don't know if shes going to have a reaction to it or not,not something you want 2 mess with as it can cause death if there's a bad reaction has she taken off any fur or skin? if so u can bath it in warm salty water.
hope this has helped and all the best"

Can i give my dog aspirin? When i woke up this morning my dog was limping. Its obvious he hurt his leg sometime in the night. Hes about 2 years old and 20 lbs. I gave him 1/4 aspirin so help with the pain untill i get back from work and can take him to the vet. Is this ok, or should i be worried about finding my dog sick or dead when i get home.
Luv_SiTa replied: "I've given my dog aspirin before, he'll be fine. You did the right thing."
star_gazer_9999 replied: "That is okay, but baby asprin is better recommended. Only once a day though! Good you are taking him to the vet. Never give your dog tylenol!!!!"
mcktiger05 replied: "you can give your dog aspirin, vet prescribe it alot. you should first ask your vet how much of a dose to give him, thats what i would do."
Blueyedshewolf replied: "Always ask a vet before giving a dog any human meds. I have always been told that asprin can cause kidney failure in animals. Now you said you only gave it 1/4 of one so I would not be worried that it will affect anything. I think that was a samll enough amount to be ok. The pet stores do carry doggy pain meds though for the future. I hope your dog is ok, and best of luck!"
Linda M replied: "Vets often prescribe baby aspirin for dogs. A low dosage is perfectly safe. Never give a dog Tylenol (acetaminophen)! It can be lethal!"
michellereducf replied: "good move. always give buffered aspirin though. he should be fine till you get to the vet."
sharrona replied: "He'll be fine. Just tell the vet when you take him.
Relax. You are taking good care of him.
good luck"
thambycart replied: "My Vet told me to give my older dog buffered aspirin, because the buffering won't cause stomach upset. I'm sure your dog will be fine till you get him to the Vet. Try not to worry."
watanake replied: "It should be okay. When you go to the vet, find the right amoung to give him. 1/4 of an aspirin will not hurt him."
SecretObsidian replied: "That's fine up to twice a day, but get him to the vet. They provide anti-inflamatories for dogs now."
dingy0bama0brat replied: "In most cases, a small amount of Asprin is okay for dogs. when you say 1/4 an asprin, that doesn't tell me all that I need to know as asprin comes in many dosages for example low-dose is 100mg, Standard is often 250mg - 300mg & Extra Strength is often 500mg. I am glad to hear you are planning on talking to your vet. For future reference, while you are there, ask you vet for the proper dosage of asprin for your particular dog... that way, in the event you need to use it again, you will feel more comfortable
Also, please don't ever give a dog tylenol (unless your vet says so, I DON'T USE TYLENOL.. I have heard of vets who do). Perhaps ask you vet for a few ideas of "household items" or "humane medicine" that is safe for your dog"
tq j replied: "Yes...aspirin is okay for your dog in limited portions. You could also use baby aspirin.
Put it with his food...so it won't cause any stomach problems. and only give once a day."
meg3f replied: "I used to give my dog an aspirin every now and then, she was much older and about 50 lbs. She had arthritis and we didn't have the pet medications that we have know. I wouldn't worry about 1/4 of an aspirin, but I definitely would make sure you take the dog to the Vet when you get home, just to make sure nothing is seriously wrong."
coressa h replied: "actually most pet supply stores sell an asprin pain reliever for dogs but to be on the safe side i would contact a vet and ask if it is safe to purchase that item for your type of dog."
porkchop replied: "Yes aspirin is safe for dogs - this is the correct recommended dosage for dogs and cats
Dogs - 1 tablet per 30 lbs. (maximum 2 tablets) every 12 hours. Use a coated or buffered aspirin.
Cats - do not use!!"
Esther replied: "I'm surprised at all the people saying it's perfectly okay to give your dog aspirin, without even consulting a veterinarian.
Most aspirin on the market contains acetaminophen which is toxic to dogs given incorrectly (this is especially true for Tylenol, Excedrin etc).
What can this do to your dog?
This can cause severe liver failure or permanent liver damage along with red blood cell damage.
Please talk to your veterinarian about the problem first before giving any over the counter medications.
Chemicals are often a last resort to treat pain, and are only used in severe cases - even at veterinary clinics.
Hope this helps!"
Can you give a dog aspirin? My little Lasa has arthritis. Can I crush up aspirin in her food? Will it hurt her or help her with the pain? Please be honest. I don't want to do anything to make it worse for her.
grrl replied: "With all the caffeine in it I don't recommend it. Call your vet for this one."
jonny replied: "you better call the Vet. B4 you take advice on her for that."
That Chick You Wanna Know replied: "its best to call a vet you could seriously hurt your dogs internal organs"
blaze23 replied: "My vet says yes. My Rottweiler/German Shepard weighs 75lbs and she says I can give him 1ASA a day for pain. She says the side effects for him would be the same as for humans, maybe an upset stomach. Depending on the weight of your dog you may want to give your vet a call and see how much she can have in a day."
Janet lw replied: "Yes dogs can take aspirin but how much and how often depends on their size. You need to ask your vet for the correct amount so you don't make your dog sick. The vet has more effective drugs for arthritis much better than aspirin, give him a call."
nevada nomad replied: "I don't think you should give it to her until you ask a vet. I believe aspirin can be bad for cats, but I'm not sure about dogs."
SNVL replied: "Yes, you can but you have to give her half of it if she is very small. It helps. My Terry (german Shepherd) was very ill, she refused to eat and was feeling weak all the time- I gave her an asprin and she was feeling much better after a few hours.....
But if you think that she is still in alot of pain afterwards please take her to the Vet..."
polarbaby replied: "i have worked in a vet office and a vet hospital....an 80mg aspirin is okay to give your dog!! I am not exactly sure on frequency but i think it is every 4 hours....i would call a vet just to make sure!!
Good Luck!!!!"
Dav replied: "Our vet told us to give our *large* dogs baby aspirin rather than adult type. Talk to your doctor about proper dosages for the size and health of your dog."
Loli M replied: "Aspirin will not hurt your dog. It may not do much for your baby's arthritis pain but it will not hurt. You may want to try some dog glucosamine...if you have a Trader Joes where you live, they sell a really good one at a decent price. Also...if there is a swimming pool the dog could use...great exercise with no impact to irritate already irritated joints. Just like in people, gentle exercise helps to ease arthritis pain."

take your pet to the vet."
Quiana replied: "if they are from a vet yes u can"
lesa b replied: "You can give your dog a "baby asprin" because of her size but not recommened to do often, as it can cause stomach problems, but never Tyenol or ibeprofan, there are wonderful drugs out there for dogs with arthritis, they are designed to give long term such as Rimadyl & deramaxx, your vet can tell you whats best for your girl."
constance451 replied: "My vet says "NO!" to aspirin; but your Vet can give your dog prescription medicine for your dogs arthritis. My Moms' Chihuahua has to take some meds. for this. A once yearly cortisone shot can also help! Talk to your Vet!"
Anria A replied: "My mom use to give my dog (that was the size of a fox terrier) half an aspirin. She would put it in his mouth and hold it closed until he swallowed. Half an aspirin is a low dose and wont harm him.
My dog life to be 16 years old. He was exploring and walking around all that while, and my parents only had him put down when his back legs gave in, due to arthritis.
I think this will help ease her pain, but if you try and and it makes her drowsy, rather take her to the vet.
Good luck."
jessica g replied: "yes dogs can have it but the dosage is a lot smaller so i wouldnt give her a whole lot of it."
legally blonde replied: "Yes, but you'd want to check with your vet for the correct dosage. My vet told me to make sure to use buffered aspirin for my lab...but my friend's vet had her give HER lab regular bayer aspirin. Go figure."
tejas_yuki replied: "Although aspirin is safe in dogs (never cats), a buffered aspirin or baby aspirin is best. Call your vet for a dose. This is not a long term relief product. If you are looking for long term use, ask your vet for a prescription of Rimadyl, deramaxx, previcox, etc. Also, there are supplement that you can add to her food like omega 3 fatty acids, synovi tabs, glucosamine and MSM.
Aspirin, on long term, can cause gastro-intestinal problems, ulcers, kidney problems and upset stomach, too."
moon_griffen replied: "call and ask your vet, they dont charge you for questions. And I am sure you would rather have professional advice then see your dog get ill."
Country Hick replied: "Yes you can give aspirin to a dog. The dosage is much less than a human can take though. Also I was told to always use buffered aspirin and not to crush it to prevent unwanted effects on the stomach. How much and how often is something that you need to check with your veterinarian. It varies depending on the size of your dog.
Also, ask your veterinarian about glucosamine condritin. It is a medication some people use on dogs who have joint pain and arthritis, supposedly it works.
We have an older black Labrador that weighs 108lbs who gets stiff and sore after a lot of exercise, we were told to use one 325mg tablet a day. We just put in the back of his throat and gently hold his mouth shut until he swallows then give him a reward. Or you can put it inside a piece of banana or peanut butter and bread. He takes it like a good trooper, its like a treat to him. Good luck."
yetti replied: "Some vets would say yes and other no....I have a buddy whos dog has a bad hip from getting hit by a car, large lab...probly 120 lbs...1/2 an asprin if the dogs starts to show pain in the joint....not every day, just when it hurts...and only one a day when you do...."
Juleette l replied: "Lots of vets recomend baby-asprin, but make sure it's okay with them first. Asprin can thin the blood in a dog like a humans, there are dog asprins out there on the market, that might be a better choice.
However for arthrist you need a glycosomine and a condroitin supplement to rebuild there muscules and cartilage, using something like Glyco flex will help and it's the only Dog product on the market with FDA aproval for DMG. Best over all and you can get it dirt cheap at"
Eeyore replied: "Yes You have a smaller dog so 1 Baby asprin a day that's it!"
Cara B replied: "Yes you can, my vet prescribed it for my dog. You might be better off giving her glucosamine/chondroitin for the arthritis though."
How much aspirin should I give my dog? My dog is 38-40lbs mix beagle and golden. He hurt his leg yesterday running and is now limping.
nancy b replied: "1/2 tab of adult aspirin."
Anubis * Star replied: "That is a GREAT question... for your vet!"
Kip's Mom *switching to raw* replied: "None.
Call your vet. If the dog has an internal injury, aspirin can make it worse. If your dog needs an operation, aspirin will delay surgery.
NEVER give your dog any human medication without the okay of your vet."
Sarah replied: "ASPIRIN IS FOR ADULT HUMANS!
Your dog is not a person. You can't give him aspirin. He will get sick. Call the vet and they can advise you on home remedies or you could always bring him in to the vet just to make sure he didn't sprain, break, or twist his ankle. It's always best to consult a vet."
eric b replied: "You can give him baby aspirin every 4 to 6 hours."
Kelli L replied: "None unless your dog is under the supervision of your vet."
Vicki J replied: "You really should ask your vet about this as Rimidyl is a much better option than aspirin. But this is the chart that you should use if you are going to administer aspirin to a dog.
Weight of dog in pounds (or kilograms) Number of tablets each 12 hours mg
8 lbs (3.6 kg) 1/2 baby aspirin or less 40 mg
16 lbs (7.2 kg) 1 baby aspirin 80 mg
32 lbs (14.4 kg) 1/2 adult or 2 baby 160 mg
48 lbs (21.6 kg) 3/4 adult or 3 baby 240 mg
64 lbs (28.8 kg) 1 adult or 4 baby 320 mg
80 lbs (36 kg) 1 1/4 adult or 5 baby 400 mg
96 lbs (43.2 kg) 1 1/2 adult or 6 baby 480 mg
Note that if you give more than the recommended dose, it can be toxic."

Have you considered taking your dog to the vet, I would.
In the mean time just like when you have a muscle pull, ice it.
I use a bag of frozen veggies, pea`s work real well. And as far as giving any pain medications wait to see what the vet say`s.
Good Luck and God Bless"

MyCheckers replied: "OK, you need to call your VET to ask this question. Don't give your dog any medication without knowing the proper dosage. Yes Aspirin is ok to give, but you need to know the proper amount!! Call your Vet."
I have a older dog and some days her hips hurt her, is it tylenol or apirin I can give her? My dog is a large breed and she only has a few bad days a month, she isn't hurting to the point she needs to be put down and she still plays like a puppy, but she is getting up there in age and some times her hips hurt her. I don't remember if its tylenol or aspirin I can give her to help on her bad days.
Jon Atwood replied: "Your Vet can provide you with pain killers you can give to her for the bad days"
cpinatsi replied: "Aspirin is toxic to animals, don't give her any. I don't know what tylenol is, but don't give anything for humans, it is probably wrong. there is a vet painkiller called Metacam for dogs."

cpinatsi, I'm sorry you're wrong."

Clairebear replied: "i wouldn't give her either one those are people medicine it might hurt her call a vet for sure though"
Akitas are Bomb replied: "DO NOT give your dog anything unless you have asked the vet first. Dog can only have Non-buffered asprin. Tylenol can kill your dog! Call you vbet and they will tell you want kind and how much you can give your dog., A phone call cost nothing"
Justin G replied: "Don't give people pain killers to dogs, they are meant for people. If you give them to your dog, they will not be pain killers, but just killers. You need to talk to your vet to find out what to buy your dog."
* I ♥ my Rotti/GSD & Rotti * replied: "Do Not give your dog either. I defiantly know they can not take aspirin. How about talk to your vet and get some information off of your vet and maybe he can give you something for her pain that is made for dogs.
Ok let me add something........ The only reason I said dogs shouldnt have aspirin is because once my pup had diarrhea and they said don't give it pepto bismil bcuz it contained aspirin. So I figured this means dogs cant take the pills of aspirin. I am sorry that I am making people mad geesh..she should talk to her vet anyway just to make sure and how much to give. People you get so mad. How about I not answer anymore questions that I am not sure of ok??"

and heres a site from petco showing dog asprin
